Question Which male fragrances do women really, really hate?

Based on what I read on BaseNotes, there are certain male fragrances that women really hate even though men (husbands, boyfriends, fathers) like to wear them (why would they wear them otherwise?).

The only fragrance I have had a really bad reaction to is Habit Rouge, which I have never actually worn. I asked a friend what she thought of a test strip and she curled up her nose and said "ugh, that does NOT smell like a man!" That was enough to keep me away from it forever.

Oddly, though, a lot of women these days seem to dislike the more obviously masculine scents.

You could take this as one of those "male faux pas to avoid" advice columns, like not wearing a baby blue tux to a formal dinner. But I am myself more interested in the cultural, social, psychological aspects: does taste in "male" fragrances reflect different ideas about ideal masculinity? Why do men often love to wear scents that their partners can't stand? Who controls the power of scent in domestic situations?

I can only speak for myself, but I detest anything commonplace worn by everyone. A man should have something distinctive about himself.

If he shops for something advertised as "No. 1 Best Seller," he is a lemming. What a bore!

This means no aquatics. These are for young boys.

A man should wear something with some testosterone--sillage and longevity: Kouros, Back to Black, Habit Rouge EDP or Aramis.

That's interesting because, in my experience, men really like wearing what their friends wear. There is this love of uniforms thing that goes on. Think of how the boys dress at a high school party. The girls try to stand out from the other girls; the boys try to fit in with the other boys.

Should be Body Odor, but 30% of americans prefer to smell body odor over a strong fragrance. Go Figure.

Are we talking men here, or boys?

Conformity is not what distinguishes a man.

Let everyone else wear Axe, Lynx and Fierce.

A true man of the world wears the most unique and distinctive of fragrances. Just like his clothing and accessories.

Wearing a black tie with tails is a faux pas, just as wearing some oversold, generic fragrance everyone else is wearing.

Reach for those evening pumps, and spray on your Guerlain Derby with pride!

This conversation could easily be reversed: are we talking about what women hate here, or what girls hate?

I've found that the teenage girls forever locked in women's bodies are repulsed by things like Kouros, Grey Flannel, and Green Irish Tweed.

The adults, on the other hand, love 'em.

Opium pour Homme is the only one that got a negative response recently enough to remember, oddly enough, the same woman does like Kouros on me. Strange.

None from my wardrobe that's for sure. My workplace is full of young women. But let's put it this way - if a woman hates you, chances are she'd probably hate whatever fragrance you have on.

Well, the men vs. boys thing is a VERY long discussion. Short response: it has nothing to do with age.

Yes, this maturity thing seems fairly key to the whole "taste in scent" issue.

That was exactly what I m thinking of! If someone hates you everything on you and single move you make would just seem disgusting. Its a fact

But on topic, my female friends hate it when I wear cool water. Dont ask me why, I have no idea myself. Probably its my body chemistry with the frag. GIT works perfectly well for me though.

In my experience, the women in my age bracket (20s-30s) seem to respond less positively to heavy, spicy, or woody fragrances. Oud, cedar, and incense get ho-hum responses (but I still love GPH I!), where fresher, lighter fragrances (Bulgari Black, sadly most things with "Sport" in the name) nearly always get a positive response. However, I will say this: If your validation and sense of self-worth comes from outside feedback, just wear your Coolwater, AHS, or Aventus, and you'll be fine. If your inherent confidence is what makes you more attractive, wear what you feel comfortable with. A college student can pull off Habit Rouge or Grey Flannel just fine if he's comfortable with himself.

I think that this is very subjective. Different women will be attracted to different scents, and what one women will like, not necessarily another would enjoy, etc.

Most designer fragrances are heavily market tested, and so I highly doubt that any one would "really hate". Perhaps some of the niche perfumes out there might just push the envelop a little too much, and then women would 'really hate' them. Idk, you just gotta test test test.

I think it is very hard to make generalizations about any group as diverse as women. Trying to do so generally makes people look ridiculous. I'm sure it varies by age, cultural group, location, economic status, etc. As well as just being a subjective thing, with each individual having their own preferences, associations and dislikes.

Would it be possible to do the same for all men? Clearly not.

It's some sort of odd conformity to what's currently "cool." Everybody's wearing Ed Hardy, listening to pop radio, watching Two and a Half Men, and playing Modern Warfare 3 because that's what society is telling them to do.

When I tell people I'm wearing Guerlain, listening to Protest the Hero, watching The Wire, and playing the original Deus Ex, I get looked at like I'm an asshole.

Oh, and Opie and Anthony, love me some Opie and Anthony.

And, by the way, if you try to inform people that society has lulled them into their conforming opinions you're basically smashing your head into a brick wall.

Come to think of it, maybe I am an intentionally non-conforming asshole.

THink I'm speaking about the same thing now. Saw it on some stupid american 'science' tv-show. They compared a guy who they made run a treadmill or whatever for 999hours, to a guy who was being killed by cologne sprayed unto him (inhumane i know, but todays youth also have these suicidal tendencies), and maybe some other guy as well not wearin anything. Well between the two atleast guy with terrible sweat, and guy with tons of cologne........cologneguy didnt win

What if those folks feel comfortable wearing Coolwater, AHS or Aventus? If I wore Habit Rouge, I'd feel uncomfortable... so does that mean I have zero confidence and no sense of self-worth?

Wear what makes you happy. If compliments make you happy, great. If just pleasing yourself makes you happy, great.

Back on topic, the wife doesn't like scents like Musc Ravageur (likely the clove), Royal Oud, L'Instant Extreme (the topnotes), Jubilation XXV (or anything with noticeable incense).
