Default I think I am allergic to Guerlain Derby

Hello everyone, I just received my sample of Guerlain Derby from the Perfume court... this is the re-issue version of Derby... the scent is very nice and 80's, but I think I may be allergic to this fragrance... I applied some on the back of my hand, and like after a 10 minutes, I'm starting to get a rash on that spot... I wonder if it is from the Oakmoss? Anyone has experience this with Derby or other Oakmoss fragrance?

No though I have heard that some people can have allergic reactions to oakmoss which is why the regulators have restricted the amount in fragrances.

Do you think Derby is worth the hype?

I recently got a sample of this as well. I don't get the hype, it's nice, seems dated, and reminds me of Trumper's Spanish Leather a little, which I frankly like better. Don't think I'd get all hot and bothered to pony up the cash for it. Worth trying for reference, but nothing Earth shattering.

Derby is not a blow you away fragrance. Ive worn this a good 3 weeks or so and find something more I like about it every time I wear it. Its a total classic and the truest of chypres. The thing about Derby is that it reminds me of no other fragrance ive smelt before.

Change1 do you have any other frags with Oakmoss ?

One of the greatest fragrances IMO. It is true class.

Sorry to hear that you might be allergic. I would try again on another spot and see what happens. If you get the same reaction you might have to ditch the sample. Oakmoss can be a problem for some people and cause a range of reactions.

I was having a discussion with another BNr about how Chypres and other fragrances featuring oakmoss don't agree with me. Even the ones that use synthetics, tree moss or the supposed new less allergenic oakmoss I find bothersome. Fortunately for me, it is my least favorite genre.

I will try to re-apply on another day, but this fragrance has that classic typical old school men's cologne scent...

Tried it again tonight, drydown is very nice, a little sweet and Guerlainish, top notes still a little harsh for me, all in all nice, but it doesn't seem to last very long, almost gone after a couple of hours. Wish is were $50, perhaps then I could see it.

Luckily the only reaction I have when I apply Derby is a huge grin because I like it so much.

Wearing Derby now, the basenotes are reminding me of M7 for some reason, a little sweet, a little smoke, interesting.

I ordered a small decant of the re-issue as well from
the Perfumed Court about 2 months ago. I've worn
it 4 times and it's almost gone now.

Like others, I don't get the hype. It's a quality fragrance
for sure, but it certainly doesn't "wow" me.
I can't see paying the $250 for a full bottle of the current
    version.

Haven't tried the vintage, but would like to.

As others have said, oakmoss did generate reactions in a few people. But it has now been banned, so there's very little oakmoss in Derby right now. Plus, you've been around long enough to be exposed to oakmoss elsewhere. So I'd say it's more likely some other material in there, possibly some lucrative synthetic that IFRA has no interest in restricting.

Too bad you are allergic to it, because it is a great scent - citrusy-woody-ambery-leathery. While I liked it, it wasn't love at first; but it's grown on me. It's simply as classic as it gets, so perhaps it doesn't impress with fireworks at first, but then one appreciates the solidity and the smoothness. By the way, by chance I saw the vintage ziggurat bottle in a house recently, and of course I tried it. I didn't notice big differences in the two, so it seems that in this case the oakmoss substitution hasn't caused excessive damage.

I get allergic reactions to Angelmen and many other fragrances with a chocolate note,

I guess with allergies the body is trying to fight off foreign substances and attacks the body itself in that process

I encourage everybody here with fragrance skin issues to consider applying such fragrances on the outer side of clothing.

Also, be careful applying fragrances to your neck, where phototoxic reactions are more likely. Applying under the shirt, out of direct sunlight, is a lot safer. Long-term application of fragrance to the neck with exposure to sunlight can lead to skin reactions and discolorations, eventually.

I love the stuff. Contemplating the high price tag and just biting the bullet. I'm using a decant right now. There are I think three other reissues similarly packaged. Anyone have any insight on those?

I do not like it too.
I had flushing problems with it as well. And its quality is below the price.I feel synthetics...are not they the problem ?

By the way, is not oakmoss out of the market, in the European Comunity since 2010...????

L'Ame d'un Heros & Chamade Pour Homme are the other two that have been moved from Les Parisiennes Bee Bottles (along with Derby) to join the Arsene Lupin duo in the wood framed bottles. Both are quite often quoted as being 'Variations on a Theme' of Coriolan. Personally I prefer L'Ame's unusual musty juniper and whatever else is in there mood to CPH, but both are well worth trying just to experience a different kind of, well, experience! Neither get a lot of press here, I think perhaps because they have a rather muted, almost melancholic vibe about them - there are no 'whoopee' notes to speak of, but I am happy to own both. Derby is something else entirely - it has a quiet strength, it's sophistication is such that it does not need to shout like some of the recent uber-masculines hitting the market.
