Default Ambre Sultan vs. L'air du Desert Marocain

How many of you would classify these scents as being similar type of frags. I don't feel that they are exact in any way but they def have the same sort of principle going on. Amber accord with herbs an spices at the top. The amber and the spices are not the same but it's basically the same type of fragrance. I find ambre sultan to be smoother and lddm to have a more aggressive quality to it. I find these frags to have a similar structure but I find ambre sultan better suited for an upscale dinner while I find LDDM to be more of a night out on the town with the boys.

Of similar type IMO yes, but different enough from each other.

I do not like the opening kitchen spices of Ambre Sultan but when it gets too the sweet amber it is very nice. LDDM I like better as it is very evocative and it does have that amber desert vibe going on reminiscent of a exotic holiday.

You nailed it AS is good for a upscale dinner and LDDM for a casual night out.

    They bear no resemblance.

The amber in L'AdDM is not as prominent as in AS.

I don't find them similar either.
But LADDM is far superior in my opinion
I don't rate Ambre Sultan at all

I think they're two completely different things. Ambre is super herbal and minty, Marocain is earthy.

These are both great fragrances but I find there to be very little similarity.

Yea, there is little similarity, LDDM I like and AS I don't

I can see what you are saying. Both are very nice, but I would give the edge to LADDM.

Both are very well done fragrances

I can vouch for the similarity, but hate to say that like neither. lAdDM felt like an assault on all that had to do with subtlety. Ambre Sultan I could have gotten on board with if I didn't already own HdP Ambre 114 .

I have a strong preference for Ambre Sultan of the two, however I find them quite different.
    Current Top Favorites:
    1) Portrait of a Lady (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4) Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    6) Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)

I can understand where you're coming from but they occupy such a different head space for me that I perceive them as nothing alike. In summer (usually) when I want a fragrance that is resinous and smoulders and sits around me closely then AS is my man. LDDM on the other hand plays on powder, a subtle balancing "sourness" and incense with much greater sillage. It often smells nicer to others but somehow I feel it's being a more isolating and reflective smell.

    Hmm. Hard choise.

But my vote Serge Lutens - Ambre Sultan (More wearable and more exotic)

Yes, they are both dense oriental niche fragrances with amber and spices, of contested wearability.

I see what you're saying but at the same time I don't get much similarities. Ok, let's hypothetically assume they share the herbal/spicy quality, there's still one main difference between the two: Tauer's incense signature which is anything but insignificant.
