Thread: Best Serge Lutens!
Send an e-mail to them and ask for the wax samples and you will have an idea how some of them smell.
I only tried, in liquid state, Vitriol d'Oeillet and L'Eau Froide. I much prefer the first over the second. A creamy carnation, while the latter is a stale soap
Fumerie Turque > Ambre Sultan/MKK >>>>>>>>>>> The rest ...
I've changed my mind on Lutens, big time.
My original impressions when sampling them three or four years ago were that they were largely over-done, with too much of everything. I still feel that way about some of them, but I now own MKK (biggest u-turn ever), Jeux de Peau, Fumerie Turque, 5 O'clock au Gingembre, the wonderful Santal de Mysore, a pocket spray of Ambre Sultan and finally Chergui, on the basis that not only do I quite like it but earlier sample wearings were, how shall I put it, lucky for me on a couple of occassions and I'm a shallow man.
Life's a bitch. If it were a slut it'd be easy.
Santal de Mysore
Current top 5:
1. MDCI Chypre Palatin
2. Guerlain Arsene Lupin (Dandy)
3. Roja Dove Enigma Parfum Pour Homme
4. Roja Dove Vetiver Extrait
5. Puredistance Black
to give you an idea on what I like here are some of my favorites:
Hanae Mori HM, CdG2, Costume National Scent Intense, Guerlain Habit Rouge & L'instant EdP, L'eau par Kenzo & Kenzo homme, Bulgari Black, YSL Rive Gauche, Burberry Brit, Chopard Casran (for those who remember it)
I've only tested Un bois vanille. It was nice but a little bit on the sweet side.
Filles en Aiguilles or MKK.
I'd be careful with Chergui and Fumerie Turque if sweet fragrances bother you.
Since you like fresher fragrances like L'eau par Kenzo & Kenzo homme and YSL Rive Gauche. Gris Clair is going to be nice. It starts out somewhat fresh and standard but the "something burns" effect quickly kicks in any make it very interesting. However, that burning smell is not for everybody, me personally do not like it, so I suggest try this one first if you can
If you like pure jasmine - SL's A LA NUIT is the perfect choice. On a man it becomes quite different, warming after half an hour to a captivating aura that women find irresistible, partly because they don't expect a man to be wearing jasmine. Intrigue, mystery - especially on a warm, summer night.
If I had to reduce my bottles of Serge Lutens, my favourite house, down to just one (and this would be horrible to do), I would always keep Ambre Sultan. It was my first Lutens and it will be my last!
Kurt smells like Teen Spirit
I think Chergui will easily be the winner
Not to rain on anyone's parade here, but I think Serge Lutens is a line you ought to try before you buy. Not every scent in the line is everyone's cup of tea.
I myself own 9 Lutens scents, but there have been a few which I rather dislike. Muscs Koublai Khan ended up smelling urinal on me, Iris Silver Mist was unrelentingly strident and medicinal, and Fumerie Turque is something I can wear only when it very cloudy and rainy (which isn't all too often, given I live in California). You want to be a tad wary with the florals, as some are very distinctly feminine (Sarrasins, A la Nuit, Sa Majeste La Rose). Some of the scents which I didn't quite like on me but feel would be brilliant on men are Fourreau Noir, Encens et lavande, Santal de Mysore, Gris Clair, Ambre Sultan and Fumerie Turque. I love Chergui to bits, but it's a tad sweet (as is Fourreau Noir when you're about an hour or two into it) and if you don't like sweetness in scents, then it may again not be your cuppa. The Bois series are all quite similar (and Boxeuses can be categorised under the same rubric as well), but my favourite is Feminite du Bois.
If you ask me, I'd say go for Fourreau Noir or Chergui. But Lutens is a polarising brand, and you have to be prepared to end up not liking it greatly. Not saying you will, but just that you may.

True I have received their newsletter and they have quite a good selection of Serge Lutens.
I really like fumerie turque plus ambre sultan. I don't like chergui too much, just too sweet and vanillic-coumarinic. I think none of them is really a safe blind buy. Except for maybe 5 o clock au gingembre. Can't go wrong with it ant it's really beautyful.
1. Dior Homme Original
2. Musc Ravaguer
3. Portrait of a Lady
4. Noir de Noir
5. L Instant Guerlain pour Homme Extreme
6. New Haarlem
7. Pure Coffee
8. Blu Mediterraneo Sicilian Almond
9. Rose 31
10. Spiritueuse Double Vanille
I have Ambre Sultan and it was a sucessful blind buy. Next perhaps would be Santal Majucule. For me logevity and projection/silage are a must.
Also fascinated by Borneo
I wonder which one our OP finally got ?
Looking back over all the various recommendations, it's hard to imagine him being disappointed by any of them.
Says something about SL, I suspect.
