Chergui (not sure if this is from export or not)
Thread: Best Serge Lutens!
A friend asked me what scent would I like as a gift. Unfortunately in Romania we don't have Serge Lutens yet so I decided for a SL fragrance. It will be a blind buy so which one do you think is the best one from the line (mainly from his export line)?
Chergui (not sure if this is from export or not)
Inevitably, you're going to get suggestions on the whole range, so perhaps it'll be what material interests you the most. In the export line, my favorites are
Muscs Koublai Khan: dirty musks (attention, this is really dirty, if you don't like the genre, stay away)
Tubereuse criminelle: striking tuberose - again, if you don't like tub, that's not for you
My faves from the export line
Chergui as Hednic suggested
Tuberose Criminelle as Cacio said
Fleurs d'Oranger ( very heady stuff . )
Filles en Aiguilles
For sale. Carnal Flower and Vero Profumo Onda.
Gris Clair - light, subtle, hot ash lavender.
I think Chergui is the easiest blind buy, being new to the house myself.
So far, Chergui is in the lead, but I still several SL's to try.
My favorites are Feminite du bois, MKK, filles en aiguilles.
I like Gris Clair, Ambre Sultan, and Datura Noir.
I had Five O'Clock Gingembre briefly. It was a pretty good scent, I liked it but it wasn't something I could pull off well imo. Was very herbal imo
If you are a cinnamon fan at all, give Rousse a try. It doesn't get much attention here, but I really love it. (I will say though, that it works best in cold weather, and around the holiday season as its got that spice/potpourri type vibe).
Chergui. Five O'Clock au Gingembre is good, too. And I really love Un Bois Vanille. Can't go wrong with any of these.
Serge Lutens has a lot of winners so it depends on you so sampling should be your best plan.
As far as my opinion I like...
Jeux De Peau
Limited experience with this house thus far, but I am a big fan of Filles en Aiguilles.
From the export line, any amongst these:
Filles en Aiguilles
Sa Majeste la Rose
MKK all the way!!!
My Top 10
1. Amouage Homage Attar
2. Serge Lutens - Muscs Koublai Khan
3. YSL M7
4. Serge Lutens - Ambre Sultan
5. Chanel Egoiste
6. 24 Gold by Scentstory
7. Amouage Epic Man
8. Amouage Jubilation XXV
9. Bond No. 9 New York Oud
10. Serge Lutens - Chergui
"A beautiful fragrance to the nose is like good jazz music to the ears, great food to the mouth, and Megan Fox and Jessica Alba to the eyes..."
I have only sniffed one Serge. Sad beans. It was Feminite Du Bois and me likey.
I would try Chergui before buying. It is very sweet. (I do like it, though).
I don't think I'd recommend blind-buying for any SL. I'm still sampling my way through all of them, about 2/3 through.
They're all great! You can start with Ambre Sultan.
Jeaux De Peau
Cacio made a good point. There is no single best Lutens. Preferences will vary with taste. If you enjoy sweetness you'll find them in Chergui, Ambre Sultan, 5 O Clock, Jeux de Peau, etc. If you're into woods and smoke, try Serge Noire, Fille en Aiguilles, Fumerie Turque. MKK is an excellent floral musk. If you enjoy aldehydes you must try La Myrrhe. Cuir Mauresque or Daim Blond for soft leather/suede. Most popular Lutens going by last BMM face offs: Chergui. But imo there are better Lutens. Iris Silver Mist is probably one of Lutens most respected masterpiece. I feel for you, lol. No easy decisions here.
My favorites by far are Fille en Aiguilles and Gris Clair. I haven't sniffed all of the SL line, but I've sniffed many. These two are sooooo nice! I give the nod to FeA.
Wild at Heart and Weird on Top
You really can't go wrong with:
Fille en Aiguilles
All of these are versatile and safe blind buys for a guy. Fumerie Turque is great as well, but not as versatile as the others, imo.
Current top 10:
1. L'Artisan Dzing!
2. Lorenzo Villoresi Yerbamate
3. Guerlain Bois d'Armenie
4. L'Artisan Al Oudh
5. Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Silver Factory
6. Parfumerie Generale Bois Blond
7. Andy Tauer L'Air du Desert Marocain
8. Guerlain Derby
9. Geo F Trumper Eucris
10. Parfum d'Empire Ambre Russe
Louve, Jeux de Peau, Chergui, and Muscs Koublai Khan are my SL favorites thus far.
Borneo 1834, Daim Blond, Bois et Fruits, and Rose de Nuit are honorable mentions as well.
Chergui...ick! Too sweet. I prefer Ambre Sultan to Chergui but I am swimming upstream here. Musc Koublai Khan is awesome and not at all dirty as people would have you believe here, actually beautiful and a floral musc scent that stays close to the skin. Cedre is worth a smell. OK, my tastes are divergent from the norm here. Sorry about that.
1. Amouage Epic man
2. Dior Leather Oud
3. Perris Monte Carlo Oud Imperial Black
4. Le Labo Patchouli 24
5. Amouage Opus VII
6. Byredo Bullion
7. Masque Milano Russian Tea
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
It would be easier to ask which SL do you not like.
If you give us a few perfumes you love and wear it would be helpful for suggestions.
There are only a few SL I don't like.
Send an e-mail to them and ask for the wax samples and you will have an idea how some of them smell.
I only tried, in liquid state, Vitriol d'Oeillet and L'Eau Froide. I much prefer the first over the second. A creamy carnation, while the latter is a stale soap
Fumerie Turque > Ambre Sultan/MKK >>>>>>>>>>> The rest ...
I've changed my mind on Lutens, big time.
My original impressions when sampling them three or four years ago were that they were largely over-done, with too much of everything. I still feel that way about some of them, but I now own MKK (biggest u-turn ever), Jeux de Peau, Fumerie Turque, 5 O'clock au Gingembre, the wonderful Santal de Mysore, a pocket spray of Ambre Sultan and finally Chergui, on the basis that not only do I quite like it but earlier sample wearings were, how shall I put it, lucky for me on a couple of occassions and I'm a shallow man.
Life's a bitch. If it were a slut it'd be easy.
Santal de Mysore
Current top 5:
1. MDCI Chypre Palatin
2. Puredistance M
3. Roja Dove Vetiver Extrait
4. Guerlain Coriolan
5. BPC Oud
Decants for swap: http://www.basenotes.net/threads/394...swap-US-Canada
to give you an idea on what I like here are some of my favorites:
Hanae Mori HM, CdG2, Costume National Scent Intense, Guerlain Habit Rouge & L'instant EdP, L'eau par Kenzo & Kenzo homme, Bulgari Black, YSL Rive Gauche, Burberry Brit, Chopard Casran (for those who remember it)
I've only tested Un bois vanille. It was nice but a little bit on the sweet side.
Filles en Aiguilles or MKK.
I'd be careful with Chergui and Fumerie Turque if sweet fragrances bother you.
Since you like fresher fragrances like L'eau par Kenzo & Kenzo homme and YSL Rive Gauche. Gris Clair is going to be nice. It starts out somewhat fresh and standard but the "something burns" effect quickly kicks in any make it very interesting. However, that burning smell is not for everybody, me personally do not like it, so I suggest try this one first if you can
If you like pure jasmine - SL's A LA NUIT is the perfect choice. On a man it becomes quite different, warming after half an hour to a captivating aura that women find irresistible, partly because they don't expect a man to be wearing jasmine. Intrigue, mystery - especially on a warm, summer night.
If I had to reduce my bottles of Serge Lutens, my favourite house, down to just one (and this would be horrible to do), I would always keep Ambre Sultan. It was my first Lutens and it will be my last!
Kurt smells like Teen Spirit
I think Chergui will easily be the winner
Not to rain on anyone's parade here, but I think Serge Lutens is a line you ought to try before you buy. Not every scent in the line is everyone's cup of tea.
I myself own 9 Lutens scents, but there have been a few which I rather dislike. Muscs Koublai Khan ended up smelling urinal on me, Iris Silver Mist was unrelentingly strident and medicinal, and Fumerie Turque is something I can wear only when it very cloudy and rainy (which isn't all too often, given I live in California). You want to be a tad wary with the florals, as some are very distinctly feminine (Sarrasins, A la Nuit, Sa Majeste La Rose). Some of the scents which I didn't quite like on me but feel would be brilliant on men are Fourreau Noir, Encens et lavande, Santal de Mysore, Gris Clair, Ambre Sultan and Fumerie Turque. I love Chergui to bits, but it's a tad sweet (as is Fourreau Noir when you're about an hour or two into it) and if you don't like sweetness in scents, then it may again not be your cuppa. The Bois series are all quite similar (and Boxeuses can be categorised under the same rubric as well), but my favourite is Feminite du Bois.
If you ask me, I'd say go for Fourreau Noir or Chergui. But Lutens is a polarising brand, and you have to be prepared to end up not liking it greatly. Not saying you will, but just that you may.

True I have received their newsletter and they have quite a good selection of Serge Lutens.
I really like fumerie turque plus ambre sultan. I don't like chergui too much, just too sweet and vanillic-coumarinic. I think none of them is really a safe blind buy. Except for maybe 5 o clock au gingembre. Can't go wrong with it ant it's really beautyful.
1. Dior Homme Original
2. Musc Ravaguer
3. Portrait of a Lady
4. Noir de Noir
5. L Instant Guerlain pour Homme Extreme
6. New Haarlem
7. Pure Coffee
8. Blu Mediterraneo Sicilian Almond
9. Rose 31
10. Spiritueuse Double Vanille
I have Ambre Sultan and it was a sucessful blind buy. Next perhaps would be Santal Majucule. For me logevity and projection/silage are a must.
Also fascinated by Borneo
I wonder which one our OP finally got ?
Looking back over all the various recommendations, it's hard to imagine him being disappointed by any of them.
Says something about SL, I suspect.
