    Default How to spot fakes

Just wondering how to spot fakes in the market place. I have a small independent frag shop near by that sells a lot of different brands for a lot less than retail. That makes me kind of suspicious. All products are in retail packaging and cellophane. Any helpful advice?

They may be "grey market" and are usually sold in stores run by Indian nationals. Usually there is Arabic or Hindi writing on the bottom of the box. Of course some of these stores sell fakes too so let your nose be the judge.

If they are selling many of the commonly faked ones I'd be concerned, and I would only buy if they had a 100% cash refund policy. If they won't do that, tell them that you are willing to open it in the store and try it out and make a decision within a few minutes. If you can't tell that way, then only buy from official retailers.

This is a very fair compromise IMO.

I suppose you could just ask them. They may just be able to accept a lesser profit margin than the huge giants if they are a small shop.

Fakes are usually 100 ml sizes or bigger at a low price. Too good to be true. The cellophane wrapping may be sloppy. On their open "tester" the label may be slightly sloppy. Check the bottom of the glass bottle. With A MAGNIFYING GLASS !!! Very faintly a four digit number is visible, and that same number must appear on the packaging. Then, of course, a sniffing and spraying on your arm test. Walk away, and live with that for an hour. If the scent is great, go for the deal. Most likely, only the top notes are similar and the dry down is pathetic.

BUYER BEWARE. Just asking them is of no use. They will lie straight to your face. I know. I have been had by flea market vendors.

most of the independent shops dont sell fakes. What they do is try to steer you toward the knock offs because they make a bigger profit on those. I have been to lots of perfume stores in Dallas and have only come across a couple of obvious fakes at one of the shops that sold lots of other junk-toys and pipes and watches...
The busy stores wont risk it selling fakes.

Batch numbers on the bottom of the box and bottles are useful.
