Default Acqua di Gio essenza-not so 'essenza'

The Bay at Bayshore in Ottawa was taking pre-orders today as I popped in for a visit. I was given a sample and healthy spray of the Essenza edition due in two weeks time.

So, I tried it with feint hope that Armani might actually make an edp that was not part of the exclusif line.

    Well, they have failed miserably.

There is no projection or noticeable staying power 10 to 15 minutes. I sampled it an hour ago and I draw my left hand to my nose and there is so little scent lingering. In fact no scent, save for what my imagination had hoped for. I'm inhaling the hair folicles off my arm trying to draw an essential oil or synthetic thread as the counter representative said there would be in this 'sure to be a hit' -dud. (hint:stick with the edt).

Armani is going to take in a lot of money in June, just not mine.

10-15 minute longevity is either a case of olfactory fatigue or anosmia.

Thats bad news as you would think the EDP would last longer than the EDT.

More of a case of the Gio hacks attempting to pass of 'toilet' water for something more than it is.

While I have no doubt they try to minimize the budget for their big launches, I've still yet to come across anything with < 4 hour longevity. I think a lot of people are anosmic to the modern musks that make up the bulk of - if not the entire - base of so many modern scents. That's why some people get no longevity w/ so many scents, while some of us that are not anosmic to these musks (perhaps more a curse than a blessing?) get 6-8 hours or more out of most every modern scent. Granted, they may not project strongly for more than an hour or two, but I can still get faint whiffs here and there for a full work day w/ basically any fragrance I've ever tried.

All I know is that some/most people must get decent to good longevity out of Essenza. I really don't think Armani - who had probably the biggest selling juice for the last 15+ years - would release something that the majority are going to perceive as evanescent. They've got too much money riding on this.

One would agree with you, I doubt you not. But stranger things have been touted and paraded in front of us like carrots to rabbits.

Well, I at least hope you are wrong. :P For some reason, I really want to love Essenza. I can't wait til it hits the local stores.

I agree with this. I've never had anything < 4 hours either. There's another aspect to this. I think a lot of basenoters have a preference for and get used to strong out-of-the-mainstream fragrances, which make the typical department store fresh scent appear weak to nose. Same with food - if you eat predominantly hot and spicy food, mild food will taste bland in comparison. This became clear to me after an intensive period of sampling niche scents, I then took a break for a few months, and when I returned to the samples I was surprised that they smelled a lot stronger than I remembered. I really doubt the typical consumer suffers from longevity issues to the same extent as fragrance affecionados.

Interestingly enough, I had just left the gym where I had showered with a mild soap. And the Essenza was the only scent I sampled while in the store. Hmm?

Well, anosmia to major musks is something that if it affects a person, there's no way around it that I know of. You just can't smell certain molecules.

There are some scents where this HAS to be the case as they have great longevity and exceptional projection on me, but many report that they get almost no longevity whatsoever (two examples that immediately pop into mind are Davidoff Adventure and especially H&G Askew.) In fact, I am pretty sure the same vetiver synthetic is at play in both of them, along with large doses of iso e super or something similar, and I think in these cases it is actually olfactory fatigue rather than anosmia.

It's like when you hear people say that they are only getting an hour or two out of Joop!. It's madness, I tell ya!

Yes, we will have to see what our basenotes brethren have to say about this in the days to come.

I think Armani is taking a page from YSL. Tweak and resell with less juice for more money.

Doesn't matter, still buying it and throwing away all my Creeds and other expensive frags just to clear adequate shelf space for Essenza. I guess I need to finish drinking the last of my original ADG in preparation for the new one.

Interesting, I tried it on paper and the scent was quite strong. I think the scent should last longer than 2,3 hours before changing to skin scent. Anyway,I am not interested in Essenza since it very similar the Edt which I own. I am not a big fan of ADG eventhough I like aquatic and fresh scent.

SoS is right, people say all the time that so-and-so frag has no longevity when they contain certain musks or iso-e super that lasts 12+ hours. It is simply fatigue or anosmia.

I have been sampling the fragrance over the course of several days and it is truly a case of 'the emperor's new clothes' syndrome. In this instance it is not a case of fatigue or anosmia but more a case of being gullible.

While sampling the fragrance, have you asked anyone else if they could smell it after you could no longer detect it on yourself?

A couple of our local malls have 'Test America' offices, where they pay people to take surveys. A year ago, I was stopped by an employee standing outside the office, who asked if I wanted to take a survey about fragrances. The survey was basically me sitting in a back office and smelling a trial fragrance and giving my opinion about it, the bottle, ect. Essenza was the one that was being tested. Part of the compensation for the survey was a 15ml atomizer of the juice, which in turn we were instructed to call back and give feedback we had received while wearing the scent. Every time I've worn this, it has never lasted longer than four hours. If you like AdG, this is one to check out, though.

If it smells just like AdG then what's the point? AdG already lasts quite awhile and smells fantastic. Sounds like another snake oil release.

I agree, I still have no idea what ADG smells like and I mean the edt. I just cant smell anything in there.

Tested Acqua di Gio Essenza yesterday. It's less harsh citric smelling, overall more smooth and well rounded. I smell more marine notes at the top and it's more fruity compared to the original. Longevity and sillage are very disappointing.
Acqua di Gi˛ is my guilty pleasure. What's yours?
