    Widen out from traditional masculines

    Chanel No5
    Guerlain Jicky
    A*Men/Angel
Dior Poison -even the current version should be sampled but the vintage, preferably 80s, is a must
    Estee Lauder Azuree or Aramis

These are all landmarks in perfumery

These are all good suggestions. I'd add Antaeus, Eau Sauvage, Habit Rouge, and any classic Eau de Cologne.

I'm going to add some more classics (my absolute top 5 have already been mentioned)

    Diorissimo
    Kouros
    Chanel no. 19
    Vol de Nuit
    Polo (original)

This whole thread is gold - these are all classics you need to know, IMO. Don't need to like them, but if you can see why they stand out, you're way ahead in the game.

    PS - Welcome to Basenotes!

As everybody else has been saying, one should probably try classics in different styles, to get an idea. Excluding vintage (sorry Eau Sauvage, Diorissimo etc etc) and remaining in mainstream:

    Knize Ten (traditional leather)
    Azzaro pour homme (fougere)
    Cristalle or Private Collection (green)
    Shalimar (oriental)
Aromatics elixir or Aramis 900 (spices, balsamic, patchouli)

With newbie being the key word, I think these reccomendations seem to be great.
