    Default Gucci Pour Homme I is similar to CDG Avignon

    Wearing Gucci Pour Homme I today makes me realize that it smells so much like CDG Avignon... the only difference is the leather note in Gucci Pour Homme I... but the incense and smokines are very similar.....do you agree?

    Sorry, not similar to me. GPH is a very soft, smooth, smoky incense while Avignon is a smack in the face dry as a bone austere incense. I own and love both of these and each is beautiful in its own way.
    Hard work never killed anyone, but why risk it?

    It's safe to say
    GPH = Campfire
    Avignon= Church

    I've to disagree. I actually find Gucci Pour Homme I much more similar to CDG2Man.

    I don' get this one either. To me GPH has a strong Tobacco note, and Avignon is all about incense.

    as opposed to the original Gucci Pour Homme from 1976 or the one from 2008.

    I find them both different but equally nice.

    Also sensing some vague similarities between GPHI and the initial unisex EDP by CDG. Though very differently blended and crafted, a strong woody base in both.

    Love GPHI and Avignon, but they are quite different to me. Others have already described the differences quite well.

    I think they smell a lot alike. You have to keep in mind the time line of these introductions. Back in '02 there were not many like Avignon on the market. There is a progression of inspiration here: Avignon 2002 >> Gucci Pour Homme 2003 >> CdG 2 Man 2004. This could be a soap opera of perfume ambitions.

    I got a bottle of Avignon shortly after it came onto the market in 2002. Instantly became my signature fragrance. You have to remember at the time line - Avignon was launched in 2002 and didn't really arrive in the U.S. with any notice until 2003 no ad campaign, no announcements, they just tiptoed in one day "pardon me, we have this 'lil fragrance here, does anyone want it?". Then Gucci PH launched in 2003 with the typical Tom Ford inspired Gucci PH Advertising blanket bomb media blitz, magazine full page ads, TV, huge end cap displays in only the best and priciest stores. Boom - Pow - Gucci Pour Homme! I got a bottle of Gucci PH from the Harrods big display launch and it was instantly in my rotation. Love it. I always felt GPH was very similar to Avignon, at the time these were the only two fragrances anything like this on the market (frankincense, gaiac wood, wenge wood etc) - the similarity was quite a coincidence. Then a year later in 2004 Comme des Garcons launch their own amber bottled, more civil version of Avignon, with lots of promotional fanfare, ads, lots of push for CDG2Man to go after the more mainstream mens cologne market that Gucci seemed to be running away with at the time. Gucci came in with a bang and went out with a whimper - never really developed like they had hoped. Tom Ford left Gucci/YSL, and the Gucci/YSL braintrust sacked GPH also tried to dump Rive Gauche PH ("what was that idiot tom ford thinking?") and now we are left with Gucci Guilty! and YSL whatever.

    Don't find them similar. Both have very different themes and go in different directions.

    I do prefer Avignon much more though.

    I also get a bit of tobacco in GPH, but I get no smoke from it. I did before, but I really think that's the dry bourbony cedar, rather than any actual smoke. I really need to try Avignon, I've heard so much about it!

    Incense and smokiness is the common factor, but CdC Avignon is a smell of a catholic cathedral: cold, austere, churchy, like a catholic masses put into a scent, while GPH is much warmer, spicier with pencil-shavings cedary, peppery, woody smelling. GPH is more wearable and versatile.

    Both fragrances evoke in me a feeling of loneliness (a good thing) , peace, introspective feelings - must be the work of the incense

    Funny, I had the same thought a few days ago that they have similar incense notes.

    Definitely disagree strongly on this one, sorry. I find that GPH is far more warm, mellow and heavier on wood notes, didn't get much smoke from this one...while Avignon is a more straight forward, raw and rather cold incense with light smokiness.
