Default Favorite France Notes, and NOT so favorite notes

When buying a new fragrance, what notes do you search for? Which notes determine what you will buy? My favorite notes are:

    · anise/licorice
    · hazelnut
    · pepper
    · ylang-ylang
    · cinnamon
    · grapefruit
    · watermelon
    · Turmeric (Curcumin)

I have only recently discovered Turmeric as a wonderful fragrance when I took a Turmeric capsule and it started to dissolve in my mouth before I got my water ready to drink it down! To MY nose, it reminds me somehow of spicy-hot tomatoes and guacamole.

    Notes I really DON’T like:

    · Amber
    · Apricot
    · Peach
    · Papaya
    · Plum
    · Vanilla
    · Fig (used to love it, but it's getting old.)
Just because a fragrance is expensive, doesn’t necessarily make it smell better than a cheaper one.

    Current favorites:

    • Spicebomb

    • Sienne L'Hiver

Vanilla is probably my favorite note, but since my wardrobe is saturated with frags full of vanilla, I've been laying that note off lately. Iris is another one that really gets me (hell even that Irish Ganache by Guerlain holy crap that's powderry and whorish but so good).

Notes I don't like so far: civet, clove, vodka...mostly controversial stuff that gives off weird vibes.

I love perfumes so I like almost all notes, especially patchouli, oud, amber, rose, neroli, saffron, cinnamon.......
The only one I really detest is a prominent immortelle.

you can edit the title with the advanced edit options on the first post.

    -blackcurrent
    -raspberry
    -rose
    -vanilla
    -tea
    -lime
    -fig

    -strong animalics
    -orange blossom
    -cheap tobacco
    -licorice/anise

I struggle with vetiver, ginger and synthetic sandalwood when they are dominant in a fragrance.

just out of curiosity, why do you always use the French vanille when talking about vanilla?

No special reason just that having been posting for years about fragrances I noticed that is how it is spelled on the boards and other websites so I guess "when in Rome".

Not to say I necessarily LOVE every fragrance with the notes I love, or vice versa for the ones I hate, but I certainly feel that as individual notes that is true to a T. For example.. put incense oil in front of me, and I will love it, put jasmine oil, or jasmine flowers in front of me, and I will hate it.

Nice to see somebody else like Hazelnut. And thanks for reminding me about Fennel: forgot to put it on MY "hate" list. I also forgot to add Cocoa to my LIKE list.

Interesting that "tea" is mentioned... I don't like the TASTE of tea or even the smell, really, but I am fascinated with it. It seems very masculine to my nose, and would probably mix well with lots of other fragrances. (Except Bulgari smells like used tea bags, so IMO tea and pepper DON'T mix well, ha.)

Yes, tea is interesting; it can be smoky or green or floral and can be fantastic with or without sugar. Never tried the pepper/tea combo. Two of my favorite examples are Bvlgari Black and Coeur de Vetiver Sacre. I really want to try CdG Series 1 Leaves: Tea.
