Default Basenotes Las Vegas Meetup October 2012 Itinerary *UPDATED*

After matildaben and I posted the previous thread on interest in a 2012 Basenotes Meetup in Las Vegas in October 2012, many of you responded positively towards attending. It is coming up soon (October 5, 6 & 7, 2012), so we thought we would post some suggested preliminary itineraries of the schedule and places that we hope to visit as a group during the weekend.

NOTE: Below you will find me referring constantly to the Las Vegas Strip. The Strip is approximately 4.2 mile street (Las Vegas Boulevard South). Most of the most popular hotels, casinos and resorts are located along The Strip, although there are many others that are a short (5-15 minute) walk to The Strip.

    • First of all let’s talk about flights/airport information: The principal airport in the city is McCarran International Airport (Link here). It’s only about 5 miles south of the “Strip”. The actual address is 5757 Wayne Newton Boulevard, Las Vegas, Nevada 89119. NOTE: This summer (June 27th to be exact) the airport is unveiling a third terminal (Terminal 3) that supposedly will handle all international airlines as well as Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Sun Country Airlines, Virgin America Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines. Details can be found at the above link. Transportation from the airport is available via taxicab, public bus service (RTC Transit, link here) or the Consolidated Rental Car Facility (link here). I am not renting a car when I arrive in Vegas, I plan on just staying on The Strip, where having a car is sort of unnecessary.

    • Hotels in Las Vegas range from affordable, economy corporate-chain motels all the way to luxury 5-star suites. A list of the Top 10 Las Vegas hotels, from Trip Advisor, as of today are:
    - Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas
    - Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas
    - Staybridge Suites Las Vegas
    - Platinum Hotel & Spa
    - La Quinta Inn & Suites Las Vegas Airport South
    - Desert Rose Resort
    - Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa
    - Signature at MGM Grand
    - Wynn Las Vegas
    - ARIA Sky Suites
Of course, as wonderful as the ‘reviews’ of these hotels are, most likely your budget will justify which hotel works for you. From the above list, the Four Seasons, Platinum, La Quinta, Desert Rose, Red Rock, Signature @ MGM, Wynn & Aria are not actually on The Strip, but they are very close. Prices for the above hotels range start at $83 (Desert Rose) to as high as $558 (Wynn) – and prices may vary according to exact dates, # of people in the room, etc. I personally plan on staying as close as I can to The Strip, so it’s easy for me to get to the perfume stores, however for those that do not, most hotels offer free shuttles to-and-from The Strip.

    • The Basenotes Meetup Schedule takes into consideration a few factors: 1) We cannot please everyone; 2) Due to the large numbers of different venues that offer fragrances for sale, we cannot (realistically) tour all of them in one weekend due to nose fatigue, physical exhaustion, etc; 3) Not everyone attending the Basenotes Meetup wants to spend ALL of their time in fragrances stores. Taking these factors into consideration, we’ve outlined three itineraries for the weekend below. Take a look at them and let us know which one you prefer. Please post your comments to this thread. ALSO, please confirm in this thread if you are DEFINITELY attending, or maybe possibly attending, so that we can get a definitive number of people in our group. This will help us in planning the itineraries with the shops and the days/time that we want to go. From the previous thread we posted, the BN members who mentioned they would like to attend were: matildaben, petruccijc, knit at nite, Nersh, Warum, Grottola, mr. cologneguy, drseid, Leesee, Brian Chambers (?), Haunani, , gabeinstyle, lilybelle, YEAHBUDDY, OVincze, rubegon, cello, Redneck Perfumisto, AutumnLeaves, Al Gae, greycaptain, Jawill101, lionheart, Nersh (?), docluv45, QVT, thatmakesscents, autumngleeman, NYC Boy...did I forget anyone?? If you did not respond to the last thread, feel free to let us know on this one, that you plan on attending. The more the merrier!

    • Details on the shops we will visit are below (times are suggestions, at this point, until we contact the stores directly):

Skins 6 / 2 at The Cosmopolitan. Since most attendees will be arriving Friday, there is only time for an evening meetup. One of the newer venues in Las Vegas, Skins 6|2 at The Cosmopolitan (link here). This shop has a nice assortment of brands from many niche lines (Creed, Serge Lutens, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Diptyque, By Killian, Juliette Has A Gun, Tokyo Milk & others). It is a beautiful shop (photo here) and we think it will be a great starting point for our first night in Vegas. The Cosmopolitan is located on the west side of The Strip, just south of The Bellagio (map and directions here). Our plan is to meet here at 6:00 pm through 8:00 pm, which will allow us ample time to meet each other, sniff/shop for fragrances and head from here to dinner, gambling, shows on your own or as an informal group.

Barney’s at The Palazzo Shoppes (link here). This fragrance-friendly department store has a wonderful selection of designer and niche lines (Acqua Di Pharma, Antonia’s Flowers, Arquiste, Bois 1920, Byredo, Carthusia, Cereus, Comme de Garcons, Costume National, Escentric Molecules, Frederic Malle, Heeley, L’Artisan Perfumer, Le Labo, Les Parfums de Rosine, Nasomatto, Odin NY, Parfums Del Rae, Serge Lutens, The Different Company, Yosh & more!). The fragrance section is in the basement, picture here.

Guerlain boutique, is located at The Palazzo Shoppes. Of course, this features many ‘exclusive’ scents in the fragrance line along with the normal retail line. Picture here.

Christian Dior boutique, is also located at The Palazzo Shoppes. The boutique features the La Collection Prive line of exclusive fragrances. Picture here.

Chanel is located in the Wynn Hotel. Like the Guerlain boutique, you can purchase the Chanel Les Exclusifs as well as the normal retail line. Picture here.

Hermes, also at The Wynn, you can smell/sample the Hermessence series of fragrances as well as the regular retail line of fragrances. Picture here.

Fashion Show Mall is actually a mall located on The Strip, with normal designer/outlet stores and also a Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. Link here.

Finally, feel free to let us know if there are any other stores that you are strongly interested in seeing (or if there are any on the list that you are NOT interested in seeing).

Wow, Mike! That is a lot of well organized planning and info in your post! Thank you! It makes me really, really want to go. I honestly don't think I'll be able to as things are shaping up here; however, if there is a way that I can swing it, I will.

What great planning, Mike! Sounds like loads of fun. I've never been to Vegas, and I'm itching to go. It's time for me to make a decision, as I have two choices for that weekend (participating in a hula performance for an indigenous peoples celebration or going to Vegas). I will try to make a final decision in the next day or two, and let you know.

Looks like I'm not going to Vegas. Again, thanks for all the planning. Have fun! Can't wait to hear the reports!

    Very ambitious planning Mike!
I'm not sure if I can come as my life is so unsettled.
I would like to add the Rio to the hotel list, we stayed there once, and had a great suite very affordable. Make sure you get one of the recently renovated ones in the new tower though. It's not on the strip, but there are free shuttles.
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”

After matildaben and I totaled up the results of the Survey responses, it revealed that more people would like the 'Leisurely plan', so I'm re-posting it below and this will be the plan for the meetup:

    Itinerary 2

    Friday 10/5
    6:00pm- 8:00pm - Skins 6 | 2 - Cosmopolitan

    Saturday 10/6
    10:00-12:00 - Barneys - Palazzo Shoppes
    12:00-1:30 - Lunch - Palazzo Shoppes
    1:30-2:00 - Guerlain - Palazzo Shoppes
    2:00-3:30 - Dior - Palazzo Shoppes

    Sunday 10/7
    Morning - free time
12:00-1:30 - Lunch and Sample Swap - (check to see where is a good place at or near the Wynn to do this)
    1:30-2:30 - Chanel - Wynn
    2:30-3:30 - Hermes - Wynn
    Afternoon - Free time

Of course, the suggested start and end times listed above might change as I contact the stores prior to our visit. If this is the case, I will update this thread.

In addition, if you haven't responded to this thread yet but you will joining us in Las Vegas, please let us know. The more the merrier!!

Would anybody object if we cross-post the meetup on other forums? We'd stick to the same agenda but be inclusive of other fragrance fans who might be interested in joining in the activities.

I think it is a great idea! I know that NST and BN had a joint meetup before. Do you want me to let Tama know? (Tama coordinates NST sniffs in San Francisco and is a joy to meet in general).

Your trip is just around the corner! I'm so jealous, wish I could join you guys! When Mike first mentioned Vegas I thought, PERFECT! Probably the only place I could get my DH to join me on a sniff trip -- but alas, it's scheduled during the one weekend a year when my (reluctant) attendance is required (by same DH) in Austin for a UT football game....

I'll eagerly await tales and photos of the trip!

We will miss all of you gals who won't be attending. I do remember, C Rose, when you were at the dinner table (what was the name of that restaurant we ate at...the one with the Napolean theme??) and I started talking about Vegas to everyone. It's nice to finally see it realized. I'm excited!
