Default Recommendations to complete beginner's collection

Looking to start up a collection and so far I have

    Nautica Voyage
    Perry Ellis 360 Red
    Cubano Gold

Looking to expand my collection with some other cheapies under $40 and would like to obtain a pretty diversified collection..maybe some gourmands and oriental/spicy

One I have been thinking of is Rochas Man, Midnight in Paris and UOMO.

Go with Rochas Man dude, it's a good one and can be had on the cheap if you shop around. Pure Malt is about to be rereleased, I'd recommend getting yourself a bottle of that. Perhaps Pure Havane while you're at it.

You answered your own question there! Two good choices - Rochas Man and Midnight in Paris.
24 Gold gets lots of love as a gourmand around here too.

D'oh! yeah forgot about 24 Gold. Another good cheapie. Michael Jordan Legend is also very comparable to Rochas Man and it's also very inexpensive. I got a 100ml bottle for $12 at Ross.

+1 everything on this list... I would add a couple nice inexpensive powerhouse fragrances like Giorgio for Men or Bogart pour Homme. Then there is always a nice classic like original Polo (green).
    Current Top Favorites:
    1) Portrait of a Lady (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4) Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    6) Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)

thanks for the advice guys! just picked up quorum silver last night but am highly looking at picking up rochas now. Is rochas a safe blind buy? from what i've read, it seems that some people say it's safe and some says it's not so so safe as it's very sweet.

Sample from online or at a store? I can't seem to find it to sample anywhere.

Two good ones that you mentioned follow:

    Rochas Man by Rochas
    - In its opening, a pleasing lavender and bergamot arouse the senses. From afar, a sweet and creamy vanilla bobs eagerly. Thankfully, the lavender remains throughout the composition to rein in the sweetness. The tantalizing vanilla does intrude on that grassy lavender, and brings its sugary sweetness to the fore, steering it to its heart. The middle beckons, stewing with its coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, cedar, and rasberry notes, as well as some, lovely jasmine and lily-of-the-valley accords. The sweet vanilla blends nicely with the heart, creating a delicious mocha cafe, with hints of wood and floral twinkling. The smooth base with its amber, sandalwood, and glimpses of patchouli, usurps the melange, softening it, and evolves into its enticing drydown. It's a well-constructed gourmand. This delightful fragrance's longevity is good; and its projection is average for the first 3 hours, then sticks to the skin.

Uomo? Moschino by Moschino - One is initially treated to a crisp tarantella of bittersweet, citrusy kumquat and sweet and woody rosewood, tempered by an astringent and sour coriander. This fresh blend rapturously floats on a perfumed cloud, and eventually drifts to the awaiting middle. Here, in the heart, the fresh blend is supplanted by cyclamen, with its mildly sweet, floral accents, spicy and warm, cinnamon leaf as well as nutty clary sage, with its hint of anise. This invigorating medley flows to the waiting base. The refreshing base is a mixture of dry cedarwood, soapy musk and candied amber, moderated by antiseptic artemisia. An exhilarating and outdoorsy drydown ensues. This pleasant and masculine composition has average projection, albeit radiating, and excellent longevity. The quality to price ratio for this all-season fragrance is heavily skewed in its favor, given its inexpensive price.
