    Default The Basenotes Fragrance Championship

Hey guys. I came up with this idea to see which cologne is the most popular here on Basenotes. Here's how it works: All you have to do is list ONE fragrance. This should be your all time favorite, or the frag you think most deserves this title. You can only vote once. You must have at least 20 posts to participate so I know you didnt make an account just to vote for a cologne again. In a week I will tally up the votes and the top 12 colognes that are listed will join a playoff system. There will we round 1, 2, 3, and the championship matchup. Once and for all, we will decide together, what the most popular fragrance here on Basenotes is! only 1 vote per person. Let the games begin!

PS: Sorry if this has already been done. Like every championship, each year someone new has a chance to take the title.

Let me get this straight: A poll to find the best fragrance here on Basenotes started by a Basenoter who happens to be on team Aventus? I don't think the scriptwriters could have written that any better. This sounds like good clean fun but may I just point out, quibbler that I am, that I doubt seriously that we will be determining the "best" fragrance but rather the most popular fragrance of those who choose to vote in these kind of things. To use a movie analogy, were Basenoters asked whether they prefer the movies of Martin Lawrence or of Robert Bresson I am confident Martin Lawrence would win in a landslide. But I'm willing to play this straight here. I don't feel my heart's choice, Taylor Swift's Wonderstruck, has too much of a chance to get to the finals. So I'll just nominate Kouros instead.

I'm sorry, but what is the aim of this poll? Is it to go buy the winner blindly? I find it a bit pointless, to be honest. But don't let my opinion deter you from finding out which is the best of the best of Basenotes.
Don't mean to sound offensive, anyway.

This is not at all a poll to blind buy a particular cologne. In fact I wouldn't recommend buying the winner blindly at all. This is all in good fun. No negativity please. This is just to see what comes out on top from Basenoters opinions. Thanks

    LOL.

But just in case you're even a tiny bit serious..... have you had a chance to sniff Wonderstruck? I'm actually curious what you think.

As far as "best" fragrance - hell, I have no clue what best means any more in this hobby. So I'll just vote Chanel no. 5 Eau Première as some kind of brilliant intersection of Old, New, Borrowed and Bleu - something that deserves recognition.

True, since the subtext of Lawrence's Black Knight rivals that of Pickpocket and Au Hasard Balthazar.

I changed it from "best of the best" to "most popular" .Now were all happy Obviously the winner isnt going to be the best, but this is to see what the most popular amongst basenoters are. Its like presidential elections, just bc a candidate wins doesnt mean he was the better choice. You have to vote! Sorry for the confusion.

Thank you Redneck Perfumisto for your nice comment. And yes as a matter of face I have smelled Wonderstruck. Someone had left a bunch of Wonderstruck sample cards at work. So we all had a big ole sniff party. Not too bad really. Anyway, am I wrong or wasn't Aventus pretty much determined scientifically to be the best fragrance (actually the best SMELL, man-made or natural) of all time? Which I think makes this poll somewhat anticlimactic.

You know, Swanky, that never occured to me. You just may have something there. Two very fine Bressons and an equally fine Lawrence. But really Mouchette is my favorite. Oh, have you heard about this perfume, Aventus? It's quite something.(Don't want to get too far off subject old boy.)

The problem with a "championship" like this is that it will be decided in a least-common-denominator fashion. Aside from the popularity contest aspect that was already pointed out, there is the much more limiting factor that most people have not smelled and do not even have access to much of the top echelon of men's fragrances. For example, I would vote Windsor because it kicks Aventus' ass to the moon and back, but what's the point? A scent like that will never get enough votes because it's not widely accessible.

A true champion is not one that can fight its way into a Sephora (commendable though that is). It would truly be the best of the best, which you can never get from polling a bunch of plebes like me.

Except, of course, for Xerbia above. His vote should count x1000 because he's smelled "all other fragrances." Very impressive.
