Default Dandies and Peacocks, strut your stuff!

What do the men of Basenotes wear when they really want to cut a dash, be excessively attention grabbing, be the beau of the ball?

I confess to being a bit of a grey goose myself and not having too many really glamorous frags in my collection, but if I'm in the mood to be a bit dashing I'll chuck on some Tom Ford Black Orchid or Mouchoir de Monsieur, or for really big impact I'll go with Iris Ganache.

Hilaire, I think you have a terrific wardrobe with plenty starting-points for a dandy-like (dandyish?) perfume-wearing.

I probably would go out wearing
    - most of Lutens' scents (vintage formulations only),
    - Gaultier²,
    - Voleur des Roses
    (Dracula-Dandy),
    - Noir Épices
    ,
    - Cuir de Russie
(Chanel) and 31 Rue Cambon (Chanel),
    - Opium (1977, pre-reformulation),
    - Le Troisième Homme,
    - Mitsouko (EdP, pre-reformulation),
    - Musc Ravageur,
    - Habanita (EdP),
    - Black Aoud and Sweet Oriental Dream.

God I love Cuir de Russie and Rue Cambon to death, I can see they could easily be dandy-ish. Voleur des Roses, Opium and Black Aoud certainly strike me as peacock perfumes they're all powerful and impressive.

Classic dandy I'd go with Habit Rouge or Jicky, modern dandy I think Musc Ravaguer is a good shout.

Black Orchid and Habit Rouge both qualify and turn heads, but for extremely different reasons.

Probably best to know your audience first!

Attention grabbing? Tabac Blond extrait. It is a beautiful and striking scent, full of smoke, balsams and leather, but not very 'me', so I don't wear it often. When I do, it tends to arrest. I am more comfortable wearing Mouchoir de Monsieur, which, as an attention-grabbing scent, is discreet in comparison.

    For me, it might be...

    Tom Ford Extreme
    Tom Ford Noir de Noir
    Creed Tabarome (orig.)
    Guerlain Derby
    By Kilian Back to Black

I also have a combination of Bleu de Chanel and no. 5 Eau Première that is quite awesome.

Are we talking the Beau Brummell dandy, who hated fragrance, or the Comte d'Orsay dandy, who (literally) took baths in it?

For me, only two real dandy scents come to mind: Eau de Cologne and eau de jasmin.

    That being said:

Serge Lutens A La Nuit: a strong jasmine with magnificent indoles (in lieu of the eau de jasmine of the 1830s dandy)

Molinard Eau de Cologne by Molinard (at 80%, this is like an eau de parfum)

Veritiable Eau de Cologne by L.T. Piver

I would also venture MPG's Eau Pour Le Jeune Homme, which has an eau de Cologne feel, or Guerlain's Derby.

If you really want to know how a real dandy perfumed himself, the book "The Foul and the Fragrant," by Alain Corbin is a good read.

I have no desire to be any of the above, nor could I be. When I simply want to feel like I were able to be some of the above listed I wear JHL marketed by Aramis.
