Question Which fragrances are TRULY original?

So many fragrances out there smell almost the same, and since I want something original, it is certainly quicker and easier to ask all of you. Which fragrances don't smell like anything else, truly original? I will start the list:

    Platinum Egoiste
    Dunhill Desire
    Escada Magnetism

Eventhough I am not a fan of it, I gotta agree that Fahrenheit is truly unique.

From what I currently have, I am voting for Egoiste by Chanel.

Le Male. I'll never own it or wear it because it is SO unique that anyone who wears it smells like Le Male rather than smelling like a guy who smells great. Le Male is excellent, but it's so instantly recognizable. If 100 guys are in a room, each wearing a difference fragrance, no one would have trouble finding the guy wearing Le Male. I'm not bashing Le Male though. If it were obscure, it would be the greatest thing ever - but it's everywhere. Still... what a genius concoction it is.

    +1 on Fahrenheit
+1 on Bvlgari Black (due to that rubber note)

    - - - Updated - - -

Come to think of it... some of the classics probably fit this thread really well since they're instantly recognizable rather than smelling like a take on another scent.

    Polo.
    Old Spice.
    Brut.

    -1 on Platinum Egoiste.

To me, it's very much of a subgenre of fougere, extremely similar to Ungaro III and shares similarities with everything from Herrera for Men, to Cool Water to Paco XS.

I also think there is a difference between original and unique. An original might have been unique when it was introduced, but may have subsequently inspired many similar fragrances. Plus, there's unique in the sense of being VERY unlike anything else (pretty rare) and unique in the sense of being distinctive and recognizable, despite clearly fitting into an established genre or being clearly inspired by another fragrance (more common, but also heavily in the eye of the beholder).
Just because it happened to you doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Sorry, but I don't think Herrera or Cool Water smell ANYTHING like Platinum Egoiste, but I enjoy reading other opinions about it. I personally don't know anything else that smells like it. But maybe I should have said Unique instead of Original.

I agree that Herrera and CW don't smell like it. But Abercrombie Fierce and Mont Blanc Legend on the other hand, are dead ringers for Platinum Egoiste. The first time I smelled Platinum Egoiste, I immediately thought of Abercrombie Fierce. PE was definitely innovative at it's release back in the early 90's, but it isn't unique anymore now that others have copied it's DNA.

Encre Noir, Taste of Fragrance, Dior Homme, Japon Noir, and Aventus are pretty original IMHO.

When I bought Lapidus and posted here that the scent I thought closest to it in style was Kouros, no one agreed with me.

Have you tried Ungaro III? It was created by the same perfumers and came out the same year. To my nose it is extremely similar.

Secretions Magnifiques, give the devil his due here, sometimes truly awful but quite original.

Sel de Vetiver's pronounced salty note always strikes me as truly original. But just cause I never smelled anything quite like it doesn't mean it is.

I suspect that Minardo's pair Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin/Bulgari Black qualify.

Probably Bois Farine is in there somewhere too.

    I love Breath of God.

And while some may pooh-pooh it as not a real frag, I believe that Black March deserves to make the list. As a guy who messes around in the humic soil, I love to death it every time I wear it.

For original things that are just now emerging on the market, several of the things from the Slumberhouse line deserve attention as well.

"Original" + "Stands the Test of Time" might actually be the question here.

But things that stand the test of time are often emulated to the extent that they soon begin to seem mainstream.

If you define original as "don't smell like anything else", then as time goes on you will get less and less that qualify, as "inspired by" fragrances come on the market.

I don't see that fragrances that are proper flankers of another (where there is a family resemblance, unlike say XS and Black XS) can be considered original for the very fact that they have a family resemblance.

Sometimes 2 fragrances come out at the very same time and are incredibly similar, and you are left wondering which you can call as being original (Paco Rabanne XS again, with Platinum Egoiste).

And some fragrances stop being original purely because the nose behind them hits on a combination that they find particularly interesting and starts "riffing on a theme", such as Body Kouros/LLAM/Bulgari Black and Declaration/TdH.

Closest to truly original is stuff that is like nothing that came before it, and nothing has tried to copy it afterwards apart from its own flankers. Like Fahrenheit.

I do associate originality with scents like:

    Van Cleef&Arpels pour Homme
    Aramis Tuscany
    Esencia Loewe
    Caron pour un Homme

    among others.

I think to this day, generally the only fragrances which remain truly original are most of the Comme des Garcons series.

Way too many original fragrances to list. I agree with most of the posts here. They all seem quite original -- Except for the OPs mention of Platinum Egoiste. Not at all original IMO.
    Seasonal favorites:

    1. Creed - Spice & Wood
    2. Creed - Aventus
    3. Brückner - Aoud 1
    4. Armani Privé - Oud Royal
    5. by Kilian - Incense Oud
    6. Dior - Vetiver
    7. Les Nez - Turtle Vetiver Back
    8. Neela Vermeire - Trayee
    9. Amouage - Jubilation XXV
    10. Creed - Royal English Leather

I'll add Slumberhouse Rume. I've never smelled anything similar, nor has anyone here considering my thread regarding finding a similar fragrance had zero replies haha.
