Question Which fragrances are TRULY original?

So many fragrances out there smell almost the same, and since I want something original, it is certainly quicker and easier to ask all of you. Which fragrances don't smell like anything else, truly original? I will start the list:

    Platinum Egoiste
    Dunhill Desire
    Escada Magnetism
Just because a fragrance is expensive, doesn’t necessarily make it smell better than a cheaper one.

I can still pray in the U.S.A. (For now, anyway.)

Eventhough I am not a fan of it, I gotta agree that Fahrenheit is truly unique.

From what I currently have, I am voting for Egoiste by Chanel.

Le Male. I'll never own it or wear it because it is SO unique that anyone who wears it smells like Le Male rather than smelling like a guy who smells great. Le Male is excellent, but it's so instantly recognizable. If 100 guys are in a room, each wearing a difference fragrance, no one would have trouble finding the guy wearing Le Male. I'm not bashing Le Male though. If it were obscure, it would be the greatest thing ever - but it's everywhere. Still... what a genius concoction it is.

    +1 on Fahrenheit
+1 on Bvlgari Black (due to that rubber note)

Come to think of it... some of the classics probably fit this thread really well since they're instantly recognizable rather than smelling like a take on another scent.

    Polo.
    Old Spice.

    -1 on Platinum Egoiste.

To me, it's very much of a subgenre of fougere, extremely similar to Ungaro III and shares similarities with everything from Herrera for Men, to Cool Water to Paco XS.

I also think there is a difference between original and unique. An original might have been unique when it was introduced, but may have subsequently inspired many similar fragrances. Plus, there's unique in the sense of being VERY unlike anything else (pretty rare) and unique in the sense of being distinctive and recognizable, despite clearly fitting into an established genre or being clearly inspired by another fragrance (more common, but also heavily in the eye of the beholder).
Just because it happened to you doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Kouros, perhaps. Or do you guys find Lapidus just a little too similar for it to stand in a league of its own?

Sorry, but I don't think Herrera or Cool Water smell ANYTHING like Platinum Egoiste, but I enjoy reading other opinions about it. I personally don't know anything else that smells like it. But maybe I should have said Unique instead of Original.

I agree that Herrera and CW don't smell like it. But Abercrombie Fierce and Mont Blanc Legend on the other hand, are dead ringers for Platinum Egoiste. The first time I smelled Platinum Egoiste, I immediately thought of Abercrombie Fierce. PE was definitely innovative at it's release back in the early 90's, but it isn't unique anymore now that others have copied it's DNA.

Encre Noir, Taste of Fragrance, Dior Homme, Japon Noir, and Aventus are pretty original IMHO.

    Interesting.
When I bought Lapidus and posted here that the scent I thought closest to it in style was Kouros, no one agreed with me.

When I look at this list, with the exception of a few that have a couple that may smell similar to them; these are fragrances, that when writing a review on them, I find it very hard to pick something to compare them to.
