Default What is the best Chypre of all time marketed for men?

I have a serious infatuation with Chypre fragrances these days. I've got quite a few and the list keeps growing! Amongst my favorite are Mitsouko, Ma Griffe, Cabochard, Diorella, Aliage, and Aromatics Elixir.

But what about Chypre for men? What's the best one to you? Pour Monsieur, Escada Pour Homme, Z14, Terre d'Hermes, Aramis, Yatagan?

Yatagan is my favorite for now, but I'd really like to hear what your favorite is. Thanks!
    My Top Ten:

    1: Guerlain - Habit Rouge
    2: Guerlain - Jicky
3: Guerlain - Mouchoir de Monsieur
    4: Guerlain - Shalimar
    5: Knize - Knize Ten
    6: Caron - Yatagan
7: Caron - Pour Un Homme
    8: Jean Desprez - Bal a Versailles
    9: Yves Saint Laurent - M7
10: Salvador Dali - Dali Pour Homme

    Terre is a chypre?

I don't really feel chypres are being produced anymore. The amount of oakmoss you can use has gotten too small to create the proper balance in the chypre accord.

Yatagan is terrific, but the reformulation is more an aromatic-woody-animalic than a chypre anymore.

My old bottle of Terre d'Hermes is pretty heavy on the oakmoss, but perhaps isn't a chypre as much as a woody citrus with moss. Its deep-drydown does remind of a chypre a bit, but I think the strength of ISO-E Super really cancels out the "chypre" element.

As far as chypre not being produced anymore, the rest of the world just needs to figure out what the hell it is that Guerlain is putting in their current Mitsouko EDP. That stuff smells strongly of real oakmoss, with which I am very familiar.

I'd agree with Yatagan being an aromatic-woody-animalic! It still has the characteristic deep chypre drydown.

The impression Thierry Wasser has given in interviews is that his supplier of Oakmoss Extract has worked out a way of removing the Atranol without affecting the other chemical components. So its the real thing, just with the stuff the IFRA dont like removed.

    Could it be this?

I'm really confused about the "chypre" class. For example, consider l'essence de cerruti: http://www.osmoz.com/Find-a-fragranc...nce-de-Cerruti. Osmoz catgorizes this as a chypre, and one of the basenotes reviews refers to this as a chypre as well. Can't be a coincidental errors, yet there's no oakmoss in this? So what exactly would make this a chypre??

Please do alfarom, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. It has that fascinating bitter orange top note (cleverly replacing the bergamot in most chypres) that gives it a nice, masculine ruggedness. Very swarthy and Italian, in my opinion.

If you are looking for a really strong chypre accord, I think you should sample Pheromone for Men by Miglin. I guess one could call it a green chypre. The women's version is just a bit more floral and less green, but also a strong chypre.

I found Cristalle too girly - hyacinths and honeysuckle; nice but not for me.

I second Derby as the top choice here - although Chanel pour Monsieur runs it a close second and would probably win in a former, more gutsy incarnation.

Great question. Technically, you can pull off the accord (no pun intended) with certain substitutions. Beeswax is one of the things that can be swapped in:

    http://www.basenotes.net/entries/659...Out-Beeswax-In

Many of us speculate that chypre is something like a harmonic phenomenon - and that if you can find two or more items that harmonize, the characeristic "ghost note" arises. Three items that harmonize strongly seems to be something of a minimum for a really noticeable chypre.

I've been into chypres a lot lately too.

Many mentioned here don't smell like chypres to me all: Eau Sauvage, Arsene Lupin, Yatagan, YSL PH ...

The citrics with a little moss are maybe very subtle chypres, but I don't get that effect from them really.

The ones I've been into lately are:

    Aramis
    New York
Chanel PM - very nice, but maybe too polite and poor longevity on me
    Derby
Versailles pour Homme (lovingthealien - I think you'll like this one)

    The wearable femmes I like:

    Mitsouko
    Estee Lauder Azuree
    Chypre de Coty
    Houbigant Apercu

The recent reformulation of YSL PH (in the square black bottle) has kind of become a chypre because it's gained an Oakmoss note where one never existed before. But it's lost the Verbena note

+1 Vie de Chateau (Intense) , which is now in the "for Men" part of the PdN website.
