good morning. today is my first wearing of navegar, from my newly acquired bottle, l'artisan parfumeur sale was too good too resist, it smells a lot better now, during the summer than last time when i tried it in november so i've decided to go for it (the "better than 50%" sale being also a big factor).

Another wet day because of the rain and because of the swimming. Why did I bother to towel-dry myself after swimming when I came back home as wet as straight from the water? Ehhm...

    It's Gris Clair day.

Happy 4th July to those who celebrate!

Hello, everyone. Another hot day here in Tokyo. I miss the soft rain and cooler air of London and can't wait to go back.

SOTD is Van Cleef & Arpels Gardenia Petale. Haven't much of a choice as I've only brought 2 fragrances on this trip.

    Enjoy the day people

Happy Holidays petruciccj. Are you going somewhere nice?

Woo,Alfarom is rocking the Caron these days!

Larimar I think that you should have said somehting to the Mitsouko woman yesterday. She would surely have received it as a compliment.

Nothing for me this morning because I am on my days off and I am going into town. All this love for Sous Le Vent has got me! I think that there is one place that has it. Oh, and Hedonist, the same place has Armani Privé Rose D'Arabie, and I am feeling the pull. Big time!!

    Will report back!

Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. Jon, poor thing! I hope that ear infection clears up soon. That sounds miserable.

    Joe, enjoy!

I'm not wearing any scent yet, it's way too early here, but my sleep shirt smells good and I have no idea what it is.

It's the Magnolia grandiflora that has scented flowers: the evergreen one, blooming from mid May to July. The other, the one blooming at the end of winter is marvellous but the flowers are unscented

Gardenias are great, too! I compensate for the lack of real gardenias in my house with the Diptique candle...

    Good morning everyone!

Speaking of the magnificent Magnolia grandiflora , I'm in L'Instant, the most heavenly stylized magnolia scent I know of...and I've already learned something new this morning as I didn't realize their range had spread all the way to Italy - how interesting, and lovely! They're native to the American South, so I'm always trying to describe their fragrance to people who only know the purple ones, which seem to have a much wider range ...and are, indeed, very beautiful to look at, but don't make a beautiful perfume.

    Y'all have a wonderful day!

I am trying a sample of Monas Vanille today.

Not winning me over so far. It smells like a sickly labdanum, vanilla, tolu spice mess on me. Maybe I have a slight cold because most people seem to like it quite a lot. I shall have to give it another wearing or two.

    America the Beautiful

    O beautiful for spacious skies,
    For amber waves of grain,
    For purple mountain majesties
    Above the fruited plain!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
    From sea to shining sea!

    O beautiful for pilgrim feet
    Whose stern impassioned stress
    A thoroughfare of freedom beat
    Across the wilderness!
    America! America!
    God mend thine every flaw,
    Confirm thy soul in self-control,
    Thy liberty in law!

    O beautiful for heroes proved
    In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
    And mercy more than life!
    America! America!
    May God thy gold refine
    Till all success be nobleness
    And every gain divine!

    O beautiful for patriot dream
    That sees beyond the years
    Thine alabaster cities gleam
    Undimmed by human tears!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
    From sea to shining sea!

    O beautiful for halcyon skies,
    For amber waves of grain,
    For purple mountain majesties
    Above the enameled plain!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
    And music-hearted sea!

    O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
    Whose stem impassioned stress
    A thoroughfare for freedom beat
    Across the wilderness!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
    Till paths be wrought through
    wilds of thought
    By pilgrim foot and knee!

    O beautiful for glory-tale
    Of liberating strife
    When once and twice,
    for man's avail
    Men lavished precious life!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
    The banner of the free!

    O beautiful for patriot dream
    That sees beyond the years
    Thine alabaster cities gleam
    Undimmed by human tears!
    America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
    Thy whiter jubilee!

Happy 4th of July everyone !

The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus ( 1883 ) The last 5 lines are inscribed on a plaque at The Statue of Liberty

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame
    With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flameIs the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame,
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

This morning - nothing as yet - just wanted to wish everyone before my day goes crazy !

Thank you, kalli! I only ever knew the first verse. I like Ray Charles' version.

And thank you, Mimi, for Lady Liberty's verses.

Magnolia grandiflora. Those are the scented ones. It is the state flower and tree of Mississippi, where I was born. The magnolia trees grow very large there, the blossoms the size of dinner plates, pale cream colored, and they exude this creamy, waxy, sweet, floral scent ever so faintly lemony tinged. I love them passionately. When I was a girl almost every southern home had a painting of magnolias somewhere on the wall occupying a place of honor. It was just a given, like iced tea so sweet it would curl your teeth. Two of my father's sisters took me to visit one of their cousins, someone much older who was living in an assisted living apartment, and they wanted me to meet her and hear some family stories while there was still an opportunity. She couldn't take many of her things with her because of moving to the smaller space, but she had her magnolia painting on the wall (across from her large painting of Robert E. Lee astride Traveler, Confederate flag streaming behind him. She was a diehard). She wasn't letting go of that! When B-belle and I were married we lived in New York, and those same two aunts sent me all this serving ware in a magnolia pattern, they said because they didn't want me to forget where I was born (i.e., who I was). As if I could! Believe me, anyone born in the deep south is OWNED by it no matter how far they roam or run. My memories are mostly good ones, so I am very nostalgic about it - especially about MAGNOLIAS! My husband and I were at a garden show here one year, and there was a botanical artist exhibiting there. She had one of her magnolia prints for sale, signed and numbered, framed and matted - all ready to go. My husband bought it for me on the spot because I told him I'd always wanted my own magnolia on the wall. So now it hangs in my home. I'm telling you, a magnolia will OWN you. I don't care much about decor and objets d'art - but I will not be without my magnolia. We have a wee one in the back yard that is spindly, and that a man at the garden show told me should just be removed because they can be picky about location sometimes and all you can do is take it out and try again in another location. It still blooms, though, even though it looks sickly to me, and the flowers have that lush smell. So I hang on to it. Don't know why I felt the urge to share all that, just a thing about magnolias and all they evoke for me.

Anyway...I finally decided on Estee Lauder Azuree. The hubby does not care for it. I took one spray - just the one - and he says he can smell it from downstairs. "Phew!", he says.

I hope everyone is having a good day. ♥
