Bvlgari PH Soir. Its subtle but detectable, sweet but not cloying, and suitable for all seasons day or night. It may not be for everyone, but it is very versatile.

From my collection, I'd pick L'Homme by YSL and Terre D'Hermes by Hermes.

+1 to the Terre D'Hermes but I might go with La Nuit DE L'Homme by YSL instead of L'Homme by YSL.

Doesn't get a lot of mentions but Burberry touch is quite versatile IMO and is also my most complimented fragrance although not my favourite.

Tom Ford Extreme takes some beating in this category. I do agree though that Aventus can also be used in most circumstances; it will be your dress and attitude that define how formal or informal it is. Thinking about it, the same could be said for any scent.

Speaking of dress. I very much like wearing Aventus while dressed in a t shirt and shorts/cargo shorts and possibly a cap. It really throws people off, but you still seem serious if needed.

Since someone has gone and dug this old thread back up, I want to change my answer. Dior Homme has now become my everyday swiss army knife fragrance. I haven't found a situation yet where it didn't work.
