Exclamation Amouage Epic Man = Montale Dark Aoud

I can't believe how similar these fragrances are.

To my nose they are both Oud and Sandalwood prominent fragrances with a serious dose of leather.
The oud is sharp, medicinal, almost chemical, smelling like fuel and oil.
    The sandalwood darkens the fragrance.
For my taste, it's overbearing and unwearable.
I don't like them at all.

I am wearing Epic Man on a hot day and I regret it.
I almost feel sick as this stuff is gassing me out...
I want to test fragrances starting from a blank page
so I don't look up notes prior to the first wearing.

A lot of Epic Man reviews mention the work "dark", which I think is funny.
If you take a look at the notes...

Epic Man is a woody oriental featuring pink pepper, frankincense, cumin, cardamom, saffron, mace, nutmeg, myrtle, geranium, myrrh, oud, sandalwood, patchouli, leather, cedarwood, musk and castoreum.
    Dark Aoud Notes
Indian sandalwood, Oud, Black Pepper, Saffron, Vetiver, Teak, Leather, Grey Amber
    Five matching notes!

Epic Man may be a bit more rounded in the drydown, with subtle notes of frankincense and spices next to the oud and sandalwood which may make it a bit more wearable for some, but certainly not for me.

I like it that Montale copies Amouage perfumes since the quality of ingredients is top notch for both brands, only Montale is a lot more affordable.

While I get what you mean, I still don't get many similarities. To me Epic Man is more opulent and complext. As you say, more rounded. Challenging at first but it never gets as severe and dry as Dark Aoud. That being said, I fend them both pretty good indeed...

For me the overall feel of these fragrances is the same.
This dark medicinal oud-sandalwood-leather combo is a genre on its own for me.
I strongly dislike it, so the nuances and complexity in Epic Man don't do anything
for me in terms of likeability.
The opening of Epic Man is quite brutal to my nose.
As brutal as some Montales out there but the drydown is better and more restrained,
while Dark Aoud remains an agressive beast during the whole drydown.
    So I agree with you.

I will do a side by side test, sometime in the future.
For now, I'm going to put my samples of both these fragrances far away.
Epic Man is giving me a headache in the heat...

I understand we all have different noses. However, I do own both these magnificent fragrances and I don't find them to be similar in any way.

Epic Man to me is more opulent, has that medicinal opening, a little "band aid" vibe, very "middle eastern" vibe, mossy, incense.

Dark Aoud opens up with a nutty, oud ala Montale style, sandalwood aroma. That goes to very dry and smoky feel.

I think Amouage Epic Man smells pretty similar to Montale Dark Aoud, at least they have a really similar 'vibe'. The drydown of Epic Man reminds me A LOT of the drydown of CDG Wonderwood...
