They're very different really.
Amber Absolute has a lot of amber and incense whereas Al Oudh is woody, slightly spicy.
Any thoughts? both cost of a fortune so I'd like to hear some thoughts. Everything turns sweet on me (must be all the sugar I eat) but I love spicy fragrances and I understand that amber is having a moment. My husband loves Al Oudh on me but the level of musk that comes across on me is borderline obscene, which is why he loves it.- Amber Absolute is very similar but a little less musky and softer. Al Oudh definitely lingers longer .
Am I right in finding these to very similar or is it apples and oranges?
Apples and oranges to me. I don't find Al Oudh obscene and certainly preferable for a scent to regularly wear. It's probably the cumin your picking up as musky - it's what provides the opening sexy/naughty/sweaty impression. AA is great too but I think it's such a one eyed resinous amber that it probably fits better into a collection of frags where it can be worn occasionally.
At the end of the day I guess you should just go for whichever you prefer the smell of.

Wanted: 5 original grey Creed EDT caps for my 75ml testers.
1 original Silver Mountain Water cap for my 120ml bottle.
thanks for weighing in! these thoughtful replies are greatly appreciated
Yep very different scents.
I much prefer Al Oudh which is much cheaper than the Tom Ford - with 100ml being almost half the price of 50ml of the Tom Ford!
