Vetiver & Greenergy are two I like.
Thread: Whats good from Givenchy?
Just got a vintage sample of Givenchy Gentlemen and really like it, and I was curious about what else is good from that house. Thanks.
Vetiver & Greenergy are two I like.
Discontinued, Insense, a dry masculine floral. Not discontinued, but ruined in reformulations (though vintage is still available on ebay or the like) Givenchy III, a green chypre.
Monsieur de Givenchy & Givenchy Gentleman are bottle worthy for me. Monsieur de Givenchy is a nice citrus fragrance with some depth (lavender & oakmoss) that can be worn year round in all occasions. Givenchy Gentleman is a statement making patchouli & leather fragrance. They of course are better in the older formulations. I wish I could try Insense, but it was off the shelves before I took up this hobby.
Vintage Givenchy Gentlemen was one of my first purchases - I still have the splash bottle after all these years. Wonderful juice.
I also enjoy Monsieur de Givenchy.
I don't have any from Givenchy but I'm trying to get INSENSE.
I tried on Play Intense today. Really loving the scent.

Insensé isn't discontinued, it is just harder to get hold of. It, MdG, Xeryus and Vetiver were all put in the Mythiques range (YSL have recently copied this idea). They are all good, although one review of Xeryus says its been badly reformulated, I don't know, I never tried the original.
Gentleman is fantastic. Greenergy is good, though it's only supposed to sell in Asian Duty Free (!), it's also supposed to be a rebranding of MdG2. I also like Pi, Pi Fraiche, VI Fresh Attitude and Play Intense.
Pi Neo and Xeryus Rouge are a bit weird, but interesting, you might like them.
I'm a bit more of a modern Givenchy lover:
Very Irresistible Fresh Attitude
Xeryus and Very irresistible are worth a sniff.
MdG is great. been wearing for the past few weeks.
dying to try xeryus rouge and vetyver
i like play intense personally
Most of the Givenchy classics have been badly reformulated IMO, Xeryus has been reduced from being an 80s powerhouse fragrance to being a pathetic skin scent, as the Oakmoss has been removed. Xeryus Rouge too, is no longer what it once was, the ambery musk and sandalwood are no longer present, the current formulation, smells like a bowl of rotting fruit. The only decent Givenchy is Pi and vetyver.
A very solid line up. My favorites being...
Givenchy III (vintage)
Monsieur De Givenchy

Xeryus is the only one I take seriously
So far I have tried or bought 3 from Givenchy and I like them all a lot.
Givenchy Very Irresistible
Givenchy Play Intense
Living each day one spray at a time
- Givenchy Play Intense (own... tried the Play but prefer the Intense)
- Xeryus Rouge (own)
- Givenchy Gentleman (tried and liked it, but not enough to be in my wishlist yet)
- Givenchy Pi (tried, not really a fan)
I like Gentleman, Xeryus, Xeryus Rouge, Pi, Insense, Insense Ultramarine, Insence Ultramarine Ice Cube. Didn't care much for Very Irresistible Fresh Attitude Summer Sorbet.
I enjoy Gentleman, Pi, Xeyrus Rouge, and the rarely mentioned Givenchy pH. I also find Play, Play Intense, Very Irresistible and some of the flankers to it to be pretty decent, but not bottle worthy.
I own and wear Givenchy play and get complimented on it. I am not a big fan of Pi but that's because I'm not a big fan of Gourmands.
All the good ones have been mentioned so I'll add a feminine that I really like...
Hot Couture. Purchased bottles for an ex and my sister, they both love it and it smells great on them!
Givenchy is one of my fave houses.
- Givenchy Gentleman, a roaring woody beast from the past
- Monsieur de Givenchy, one of the classic Eau de Colognes
- Xeryus, vtg, one of the best old school herbal fougères
- Xeryus Rouge, vtg, a very straaange male fruit'ish fragrance
- Insensé, vtg, an extremely dry male floral
- PI, love it or hate it, it has become a modern day classic
- Givenchy Play Intense, a sweet chocolaty must have
From their female line up
- Givenchy III, vtg, is a very male-friendly floral chypré
Pi was my first favorite cologne. As I have move on to more high $$$ I still love it!
My favorites include: Monsieur, Gentleman, Very Irresistible and Pi.
Man, I have got to get a bottle of Insense. I love all the other Givenchys for many years.
And if you ever can: watch the movie with the same name as well. It's awesome!
+1!!! Great taste, alfarom.
Along with Givenchy Gentleman, which you already know about...look into these. Make sure Xeryus is in the Vintage formulation (dark blue/purplish flacon).
I can also say, for a more modern release, that Givenchy Pi (original - no flankers) is sweet, vanillic but aromatically warming & sensual...nice for fall/winter. A bottle lasts a long time for me.
Vetyver in the Les Parfums Mythiques line is excellent, while Vintage Eau de Vetyver is absolutely stunning.
“Some perfumes are as fragrant as an infant’s flesh, sweet as an oboe’s cry, and greener than the spring; While others are triumphant, decadent or rich; Having the expansion of infinite things, like ambergris and musk, benzoin and frankincense, which sing the transports of the mind and every sense.”
― Charles Baudelaire, The Flowers of Evil & Paris Spleen
Play Intense is an excellent modern scent. Vetyver is good, but I hate Vetivers.
"And if you ever can: watch the movie with the same name as well. It's awesome! "....Definitely agree on the movie. As stated previously Vetiver is excellent...both the original and the Les Parfums Mythiques. Gentleman is a winner, and so is Xeryus...but I am only familiar with the one in the dark blue or purplish bottle.
I've sniffed both Play Sport and Play Intense. IMO Play Intense is FBW...I picked mine up on Amazon at a good price. The bottles are so lame and the tops are terrible...especially in comparison to Chanel's magnet top. A spritz or two of Play Intense will last throughout the day. Intense has a chocolate smell, similar to that of Axe Dark Temptation but obviously much more rich and complex..by no means does it smell cheap like Axe as I've read in other comparisons.
I only like Xeryus. The vintage is definitely superior.
Rynegne: actually, one of the reasons I stopped wearing Play Intense is that on dry down it did smell remarkably close to Axe Dark Temptation; I still love the Play Intense fragrance but Unilever has forever ruined it for me.
Question for Canadians: does anyone know where I can get the Mythiques Vetyver, or any of the Mythiques line for that matter? I almost never see them up here in Canada. I got Monsieur de Givenchy on sale on a trip to Portland from Vancouver at a duty-free shop at the border. I have a vintage bottle of the same and I can vouch that they've done a good job on that one.
I second Hot Couture. I would consider wearing it myself. And yes, Insensé is very unique in being a floral for men. I like it, but it's not for everyone. It might be too "feminine" for some, whatever that means.
