Default Maison Francis Kurkdjian Amyris Homme - I just tried it!

    Hello fellow Basenoters!
At the end of last week my samples of newest perfume from Maison Francis Kurkdjian arrived at my door.

I must say that I'm HUGELY impressed by how great this perfume smells.
A woody iris with a nice sweet touch, and with some oud.
    Really amazing stuff!
Gotta put it on my to-buy list, it's so amazing.

And what more I'm an iris lover so it seems to be a must for me.

For longer, more detailed impressions please tak a look at my blog
    http://chemistinthebottle.wordpress.com/2012/08/13/233/

That would be great if you droped by and left a comment eventually!

If anyone else of you tried it please do ABSOLUTELY share your thoughts! I'm curious what others think about it!

Maybe not typically heavy, but iris is the main player. I think resins and oud make it heavier

Have tried the new Amyris one, the femme version is a leafy/citrusy scent and orange, lemon tree flower and amyris play the main roles here. The iris, vetiver and wood notes are very faint and subtle, i mean really subtle.. It has pretty good longevity actaully, sprayed some on last night around 11pm and now i can still able to smell the scent at 8 in the morning. Just like APOM and Lumiere Noire, Amyris homme shares a similar composition to the femme version and i guess maybe because of the tonka bean, it appears a bit more sensual but just like the other fragrances from MFK’s line, both versions are actually quite neutral.

Have been wearing the homme version for couple days and despite it is in EDT form, longevity and projection are both outstanding. It’s most likely come second after Absoulety Pour le Soir from the brand. I could easily smell the fragrance from my neck after a hot shower. On me, just like the femme version, the iris was also very subtle in this one. (no lipstick or powder pouch) I guess due to the rosemary and tonka bean notes, there was a certain phase reminding me of Le Male. Not much, just a hint.

I don't get anything remotely close to Le Male out of this. The other poster may be responding to the faint underlying milk chocolate note that runs throughout this one, but I can say without question that I never once thought of Le Male while wearing this the multiple times I have.

I have only sniffed this on paper in the store, so you can take this with a grain of salt, but this fragrance reminded me a lot of Aqua di Gio. I still intend to sample and skin test it, as I love several other MFK fragrances.

I have to agree with you on this. I smelt it at neimans beverly hills and it was the most generic MFK I have ever smelled. Literally smelled like a department store scent. I own Luminere Noir and APOM and find them stunning but this was a BIG letdown.

Received a sample last week from Bergdorf. While I found it to be a nice fragrance, it turned into a skin scent in less than two hours on me.

I have apom and lumiere and tried amyris this past week and was unimpressed.

The topnotes started out kind of ok but then it just smelled really synthetic and I was getting the dry woody (norlimbanol)? vibe going and it just kind of reminded me of muglers outrageous for a bit.

Not in the same feel as the rest of the brand to me, just smelled flowery, thin, watery and fake woods. Not terrible just didn't really care for it.

Half-decent for a department store scent. By MFK standards - a clunker.

Acqua Di Gio? What are you guys smelling? I don't get anything at all like ADG out of Amyris. Maybe the citrus at the very beginning, but after about 15 minutes that's totally gone and it becomes herbal, earthy, and oudy, nothing at all like ADG or Le Male.

After testing it in NM last week, the SA and myself were in unison in our lukewarm response to Amyris. Just not the same wow factor that comes with so many MFK products. Probably the safest yet most mediocre scent in his collection. The one saving grace being that Amyris lasts and lasts. Excellent longevity, even after 2 days. The stuff shows a little more sparkle then, but not enough to get over the boredom in those initial stages.

I purchased this at first sniff. I personally do get a "Ive smelled this before vibe" So I can see how some people can say its like a designer scent and frankly at 175US for 70ML I can see how it would leave some unimpressed. However I personally really enjoy it. I feel that I can smell the quality of the ingredients and unlike a designer scent it lasts and projects very well. Personally i find many Niche scents arent very safe. Or at least the Frags which gain quite a bit of hype arent very safe scents. Im sure many would disagree but Amyris to me is very safe. I can wear this to work, or casually or even on date without worrying someone will be offended. All in all its a solid 7 out of 10 for me.

I finally tried the mens today. As previous posters have stated its composition reminds one of a generic designer fragrance. The AdG comparison makes sense. MFK has a solid lineof wonderful frags. This is the first miss IMO.

Smelled Amyris Homme last month at Neiman Marcus in Houston. Obviously a quality frag but i thought it was a bit ordinary. I bought Absolue pour le Soir and would have bought Aqua Universalis Forte as well. Certainly not Amyris Homme. Again, it is a quality, well-blended frag, but just not for me.

I just tried my sample yesterday. It has a nice somewhat sweet opening which I quite enjoyed, though it seemed to be fairly weak and I lost track of it after a couple hours. Need to test again and apply more. I can see why people might be unimpressed with this, it is very safe smelling. But for what it is, so far so good.

I don't see AdG or Le Male but I get Code with the opening of YSL L'homme. It's definitely his closest to smelling like a designer release.

There was no ball to drop in the first place, as he's very much a perfumer for designer houses (who occasionally does a bit of niche on the side). Although Maison Francis Kurkdjian is classified as a niche house, their style and approach towards perfumery is that of a designer house, AFAIC.

After wearing it for a few hours now I have to agree with this general assessment. The scent starts off nicely, but on skin it is absolutely indeed loaded with norlimbanol in its heart and it dominates most everything else for a good part of the scent's development. I like Amyris Homme, but it is a disappointment when you consider it's pedigree. I would say 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5... Pretty decent, but certainly not great, IMO.

Hey Trebor, can you elaborate? I'd say that although his MFK fragrances are styled to be accessible to the mainstream demographic, they're also unique and creative enough to be in the niche category (regardless of pricing).

    Hey!

Well, I can't speak for all of them but I get a designer vibe from the basenotes of the ones I've tried so far (including Absolute). Call it designer deja vu, if you will. I know that niche has a pretty broad definition these days but, when I'm sampling a niche fragrance, I don't expect a designer-esque aura to greet my nose. After all, this what I would expect after acknowledging a higher (or exclusive) price tag.

High quality and decent structure but not very memorable.

Hmmm yeah I see where you're coming from. I agree: if I were to smell an MFK fragrance on someone I might assume it was just a really good designer fragrance. I suppose it's a worthy sacrifice he made in order to maximize profits. Not to say I don't love his work and his line. He's definitely a genius IMO. I wonder what he would release or create if you gave him total freedom, eg. a bespoke fragrance.

On a side note, I have to admit that it takes a lot to surprise me and strike me as original these days. It's really too bad, since at this point in the "niche game" a lot of perfumers would have to release a dill pickled space dust fragrance to shock my nostrils. Can't be easy for perfumers these days.

This company makes one bottle worthy scent (Absolue pour le soir), the rest are mediocre designer scents at best.

Wow, I think that the whole line is full of masterpieces. Blending, quality of ingredients, subtleties, character. It's all there. Funny thing is, Absolue pour le soir is my least favorite fragrance. To me, it's "too much" and not quite wearable.

We're complete opposites and that's cool. Art (or lack thereof) can be so subjective.

I do love M by Pure Distance though - maybe we can agree on that thebeck!

In terms of the Amyris Homme, I'd love to try it. Nice review lucasai, I've got a pretty good idea of what to expect from it.

I get the designer "deja poo" too. (The feeling that you've smelled this crap before)

However, the quality is good, longevity and projection positive, and it also dries down to a good place. Furthermore, at present I have nothing quite like it in my wardrobe, so it's actually going on my wishlist.

P.S. Compared to other designer-ey niche- I prefer it over Xerjoff's Uden and maybe a slight notch over Cereus' stuff.

I spent some more time with my sample and found I was actually liking it more and more with each wearing. It is without doubt a safe scent, and although it does smell light and fresh like many designer scents I've tried, it is unique. There is a beautiful buttery smooth characteristic to it that took a couple wearings to appreciate. Natural, comfortable to wear, and just overall smells good. I find it is better than his APOM and Cologn pour le matin offerings for a light option. Full bottle is on the way.

Amyris Homme is nice, but somewhat generic. I need to sample it a bit more. It´s definitely "safe" and longevity is quite good.

I think the fragrance is super nice! I don't get the aqua di gio, Le male, YSL vibe at all. I wore those fragrances all the time in middle school. This is a sexy scent.

I am still sampling Amyris, but I'm pretty sure that I'll be buying a bottle. It is somewhat modern, but with a kick of something different that really makes it amazing on the dry down. I wouldn't say that there are any MFK scents that are "designer" whatsoever. I wear LNPH a lot and always get compliments..... and I mean a LOT. It is EDT but crazy strong. I tried Absolue pour le soir multiple times. Sampling from Luckyscent and from MFK directly. That stuff is probably last on the list of quality from MFK for me. Straight up stinky barnyard is a dead on perfect description. Nothing sexy about a guy that smells like pig and chicken poop and urine (yes, don't forget that there is a healthy dose of urine scent in there). Anyhow, to each their own.... that's why there are so many scents for us to try and enjoy apart from what others might think are perfect.

I find absolutely nothing "niche" in this creation. Amyris is a typical modern fruity spicy sugary fragrance that smells like Carolina Herrera CH Men / S.T. Dupont 58 Avenue Montaigne / Trussardi My Land maybe with a drop of synthetic sweetness from Armani Code. By the way the quality of components seem to be better in CH Men, for example. Amyris is a nice and pleasant scent, but for $50, not for $150.
