Default Do you believe that certain scent should go with certain people?

have you ever been surprised by people with their discordant scent?
(ex. a flirty scent on a shy nerd or a feminine scent on a macho man)

    here's my story:
I'm a network technician, 23yo male, 135lb 5'11'' . I work at a stationary environment for a big company. even though I don't get to greet a lot of people each day, I still want to smell good. So i decided to put on a baby fragrance by kaloo (I got it as a gift for purchasing a sweater for my niece), it is a sweet-floral-candy- babypowder kind of scent. Surprisingly, almost all of my co-workers noticed it and gave me compliments (which is kind of strange and creepy). I kept wearing it since I personally love the smell of baby, as I would play with my niece for hours just to catch that milky smell on me D:

unfortunately, my supervisor doesnt seem to like it, he gave me an remark in a monthly gathering, which states that my scent commentates me as being a unprofessional, childish, playful person who don't take his job seriously. I was kind of upset and scared. since I'm the newest guy with probation, I don't want to give my boss a wrong impression as being incompetent.

is there a fragrance that associate with intellectual, affable, and sharp for young IT specialist? I wondered.

    Hi,

Welcome to the boards. I think you will soon realize that most of us here are "explorers" of many different scents and that the idea of matching a fragrance to a certain type of person is not a priority. I'm the same height as you, but I happen to weigh 200lbs , and I do occasionally dab on women's perfume.

That being said, you do seem disturbed by your supervisors comment, and at 135lb, you are not exactly on the bulky side. Combining that with a babypowder scent doesn't do much to improve your presence. I wouldn't suggest your spring for Antaeus, but for intellectual, affable, and sharp, yet professional, look into the classic citrus/chypres like:

    Chanel pour monsieur
    ysl pour homme
    Monsieur de givenchy

Or something a little softer but same family - eau d'hadrien

    Cheers,

I think people should be able to wear what they like as long as you have not over applied. I think a lot of times though we sterotype people to a stronger or lesser degree and if they do something or wear something that totally opposes that it can throw off someones expectations. Like the really macho guy wearing a really floral girly frag or the feminine lady wearing a mans macho frag.

I think as you are new maybe wear something that fits in then when they get to know you wear what you like.

Do other people wear fragrances at your place of employment? You may want to feel it out and see how management feels about it. I used to work at a place wear fragrances were frowned upon. Not explicitly banned but, not good either. They were very passive aggressive about it. I knew I was giving myself bad attention every time I wore my stuff so I stopped. Sometimes you just have to protect your means of income. The place I'm at now though, its like a fragrance buffet.

chisengseng, your boss became pretty personal with his remarks! I don't think that's very ok. On the bright side, you now know what he "feels" about you. I fear that he may be the type of capitalistic sadist that will take offence at pretty much everything you wear. If you stop wearing this "baby fragrance" - this would seem reasonable to me -and wear a sweet scent, say Allure pour Homme: Would he make the same remark? Such an asshole. So if you are not allowed to wear orientals or gourmands to work then you can turn to the fragrances suggested by lasta. Of course there are thousands more, and while browsing this website for all these "what to wear for work"-threads you will certainly have inspiration. I for once suggest the non-sweet Terre d'Hermès, the very "professional" Bvlgari pour Homme and Chanel's Bleu. Good luck!

I agree with some main point in here. I'm guilty as charged seeing as I sometimes prefer a certain fragrance based on what I am wearing .

I don't know if there's one I associate with that job type, and as my office is up in an attic away from everybody else I don't have to deal with that a lot anyway.

I'd recommend something that hits the center of likeable, high-quality, and distinctive. Terre d'Hermes and Mugler Cologne spring to mind. Others that would fit your age and job description: Platinum Egoiste, Aqua Fahrenheit, Burberry The Beat, and Bvlgari Aqua. None of these are sugary-sweet, either, though Mugler Cologne has a lively citrusy thing going on.

That may have been more than you were hoping for, but that's pretty much what I think of when I think "professional office tech worker," which would sorta fit my job description as well.

There have been a few fragrances I have liked very much, but I wouldn't buy just because I think they clash with my personality. You would never catch me wearing Creed MI, even though I think it's a great fragrance. So, yes, I do think certain fragrances project a certain message, and baby fragrance may not be appropriate for a working professional.

That being said, your boss sounds like a major prick.

My pick for a day-to-day work fragrance is Azzaro Chrome.

Your supervisor is ridiculous. Try Terre and Voyage D'Hermes.

    Yes and no.
I believe certain scents are best worn during certain times. Yet, I also believe in "Wear whatever, whenever, wherever." I love contradicting myself.
A shy person can wear "outgoing" scents that pop.

I completely agree with the notion that certain fragrances are limited to certain people. I bought Hugo Dark Blue by Hugo Boss and I just don't think it works for me. I really enjoy the scent but it just has this "cutting-edge badass" type feel to it that I just can't pull off with my personality. I'll still wear it every once in a while to a bar or club if I feel like getting wild

Your boss sounds awful. Your competence should be judged by how well you do your job, not what fragrance you're wearing, and criticizing someone publicly (especially about something personal like your fragrance) is really bad form.

There are some good suggestions here, but I'd agree with Jack that you could find something else that you like, and then once everyone knows you're competent, wear what you want. One thing, though: you may want to consider whether you're over-applying. If everyone is noticing what you smell like, that might be an issue no matter what you wear.

I think you should tone it way down or eliminate scent until you pass probation...then wear whatever the heck you want once you are past that point. Your boss is judging you and scrutinizing you closely on your image as well as your skills, which isn't fair, but that's what can happen in the workplace still.

Did he really say it was in public? If not, I think it is ok to give such personal feedback depending on the tone and the intention. Did he want to say "I think of you as incompetent if you continue wearing this kind of stuff, so be warned" or did he want to say "I tell you the impression others might get because of the scent you wear because I don' want others - including the next boss - to think of you as incompetent." in any case I prefer a boss who gives honest feedback instead of just thinking that I'm incompent and then treat me badly or even fire me for no obvious reason
    Makes him more predictable also.
