Hard to say, perhaps la Via del profumo, though they're hard to get (eg Hindukush, Tabac, etc.)

Classic cheap mainstream would be Pino Silvestre. Niche, and also a bit in the classical style (though often not too persistent) there's Santa Maria Novella (eg Acqua di Cuba, Melograno, Nostalgia). There are now also several niche houses, expensive and sometimes a bit of a hit or miss.

Dolce & Gabanna Pour Homme (1994) - the original formulation was "Made in Italy"...and is a modern classic!

Totally agree - I could have written that! I would add Villoresi's Patchouli and Profumum's Victrix and Patchouly to that list.
Another of my favorite Italian houses is Etro - I'm amazed they haven't been mentioned yet. I especially enjoy Vetiver, Palais Jamais, Patchouly and Gomma.

Acqua di Parma by miles for me. Anything from the range really, but my favourites (that I also own) are Colonia (original) and Essenza.

Santa Maria Novella is also worth an honourable mention, although I have huge longevity issues with them. It's a classy brand though.

    Signoricci 2 (vintage, Nina Ricci)
    Bois d’Encens (Armani)

Today I sampled Ambra Nera by Farmacia SS. Annunziata - best fragrance I've tried in a while, wonderful animalic amber!
