Default New house launched: The Fragrance Kitchen

    From Fashion Insight:

A new perfume house has just launched – TFK, The Fragrance Kitchen by Sheikh Majed Al-Sabah.

Based in Kuwait, this perfume house combines the tradition of Middle Eastern perfumery with the French expertise of Grasse, the perfume capital of the world, where scents are analysed, executed and bottled.

Fragrance is very important in Kuwait with families closely guarding secret perfume recipes which have been passed down from generation to generation. In the UK we may have grandma’s secret recipe for a pie, jam or cake, but in Kuwait it is much more glamorous with grandma’s secret recipe being for a fragrance.

And Sheikh Majed’s grandma was no exception as she taught her grandson how to create scents by mixing oils bought at the souk markets with precious ingredients sourced from India. Discovering he had a ‘nose’ for perfume, he was able to take it out of grandma’s kitchen and in to his own ‘Fragrance Kitchen’.

Although the fragrances are all unisex, some are more feminine and others more masculine.

    Signature Collection
Numbered rather than named, these 36 fragrances are meant for everyday use.

    Exclusive Collection
This line features more opulent scents which are narrative driven. Sheikh Majed explains that it isn’t just a fragrance but more of a story or diary evoking memories, journeys and personal experiences. The names vary from the straightforward ‘Kuwait’ and ‘Arabia’ to the tongue in cheek such as ‘Gone with the Smell’, ‘At Your Own Risk’ and Musky Ever After’.

    Handmade Collection
This is a collaboration with designers so the fragrance and its flacon become a work of art.

53 fragrances are in the directory

While I have similar doubts about quality for such an en masse release, I'm happy to see somewhat more whimsical creations coming out of the Arab world. Most of the Arabic lines I've seen take themselves dreadfully seriously.

True that. And looking at the notes they seem to really try for a blend of Middle Eastern flavour and a more commercial taste. Now, who knows if they succeeded. Can a member in Kuwait stop by the shop and give them a sniff?

I suppose it remains to be seen (or sniffed) as to whether these are any good, but like forfreddie I have pretty low expectations here...

I don't think this is some half ass operation. Sheikh Majed is incredibly rich ( part of the Kuwait Royal Family), he owns a bunch of luxury stores and has a slew of other ventures. His website for his fragrance line is very professional. I have high hopes!

TFK is about to be opened next week in Milano at LaRinascente ground floor Piazza Duomo, so who's in Milano should go and get that snif at the shop. For those who do not know, Majed Al-Sabah was the creator of "Arabian Wood" Tom Ford Private Collection one of his best selling fragrances. TFK Concept is also to have every month a New Fragrance Launch of Exclusive Line that has a higher oil concentration, so we all know what it means.

The website could be designed better. I mean, who's going to scroll through all 36 fragrances in the Signature Line? The bottles are practically the same, so why not list the notes in either a list or grid format?

When someone releases this many frags at once, I suppose there could be some good ones. Odds are that there are some, with that many to choose from.

But who's going to have the time, energy or opportunity to ferret them out ?

This type of strategy always seems misguided to me.

Yes, honestly even if I felt I had thirty-six great perfumes on my hands, I'd release at no more than two or three a year ( at the most ) to give them proper exposure.

I did read an interview during London launch that they have the plan to launch a new fragrance every month & to do a re-packaging every year for the entire line !!!!
    honestly I don't get ?!
& I don't get the 'TFK ambassadors' thing as well ?!

& By the way No.7 has been out of stock & it will be discontinued & re-formulated as 'No.7 Remix' !

With 54 frags released in less than a year, one can imagine them saying "Does anyone remember where we put the formula for #7 ? "

I guess part of the issue for me is that when an outfit is churning out fragrances this rapidly, it makes it mentally difficult to conceive of any of them being particularly "special and precious".

Which is sort of how people like to think of such things, I believe.

They moved onto to launching exclusives for every country they're in. However they stopped selling many of the older scents to cut down from the collection. The number collection with glass bottles are still around including number 7 but not as widely available. The remixes are stronger concentrations of the original numbers.

Need to stop by Bergdorf in New York and see what they are currently carrying from this house.

I quite liked No 35 remix, Man from Ipanema and War of the Roses. There are some more obscure releases like Underwater and Luminous that are also nice but not as versatile. The neiman marcus exclusive in beverly hills, Palm Fiction is a nice summer scent. A lot of the other releases lean more feminine imho, including the Bergdorf exclusive A Rose with a View.

I got this for an insane deal.

"Sheikh Hamad Al-Thani" by tfk (The Fragrance Kitchen), a Kuwaiti fragrance house. I stumbled into tfk back in late October during a visit to Bergdorf Goodman. They have an exclusive boutique there. I managed to try about 5 fragrances and got a few samples. I was impressed with their offerings, despite olfactory overload at that point, but... their prices are quite a bit higher than I normally tolerate. Anyway, I didn't buy anything then, but now I was familiar with the brand.

Local estate sales rarely interest me. I was looking for a used LCD TV and saw a sale that had one. Unfortunately, it was sold by the time I got there. So I browsed around... nice furniture. Styling was very Middle Eastern, and upscale. And many things were rather pricey. Except for one table that had a bunch of Middle Eastern knick-knacks, bottles with Arabic writing on them. There was a white plexiglass box featuring "tfk" on it in raised lettering, with "eau de parfum" in very small letters underneath. Quite heavy. How much did they want for it? Well, let's just say, it wasn't more than a 125ml bottle of vintage Davidoff Zino. Never opened it until I got it to my car. And yes... the fragrance bottle was inside. Completely full. Wow... The box is really beautifully done. Heavy white plexiglass with ornate raised ornamentation inside.

    Here's what I found on-line:

Sheikh Hamad Al-Thani: In keeping with TFK’s philosophy of “East Meets West,” al-Sabah created an olfactory tribute to the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Al-Thani. A limited-edition fragrance of 1,000 frosted, matte-white bottles (with 400 of them exclusive to Bergdorf Goodman), each vessel has been etched with al-Thani’s calligraphic monogram, which was created by an artist from Dubai.

The scent opens with an orange custard burst of ylang ylang and bergamot that floats into a heart of leather and rose on a bed of oud. In a nod to the ancient world, the fragrance rests on a heady base of musk, patchouli, cedarwood, and moss.

The fragrance is very elegant and seriously fine quality. Very potent, like a true EDP. Based on the quality and presentation, probably valued close to $800 retail. The owner must have gotten it very recently. I have to imagine it was a mistake to be included in the estate sale, but... not like I was going to go back and confess the real value.

Congratulations on your find, Cytherian! I'm entering it into the directory as once
It's no longer on Bergdorf's website, so whatever it cost it seems to have sold out already.

Thanks, furrypine! Great to know you've made a database entry for this one.
I don't know if it was ever featured on Bergdorf's site as it's rather exclusive. I have contact info for the tfk boutique there, so I'm going to inquire with them to understand about availability. Or... I may just bring it along to a personal visit with them, as ownership of this might encourage them to give me some free samples.

I believe your bottle was given out at an event in Japan organized by the person the fragrance is named after, Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Thani. He is a friend of Sheikh Majed and a cousin of the current Emir. The perfume was named after him and Sheikh Majed got his permission to sell the scent at Bergdorf Goodman. However, I believe the packaging of yours was for the event in Japan where guests received this scent as a gift.

It's unlike anything I've ever owned or tried, so clean but not in the typical way you expect clean...it has an elegance about it. I'm by no means a fragrance snob but I feel like I'm wearing something of really high quality, I feel clean and rich wearing it haha

Does anyone know of a site that will ship these to Australia?

I'm in love with Arab Spring and I feel like I need to try more from this house. I should have tried them when I had the chance in my travels but I was saving my nose for others since these are all over $300/bottle

I've messaged them on Facebook and through their website but no answer, ideally I'm looking for somewhere that I could order samples and then a bottle if I want one.

Sorry mate. The only place I saw it was Bergdorf. Call them and see what they can do. Maybe buying one bottle may get you tons of sample. Their war of roses and rose with a view are universally pleasing and you can probably buy blind.
