    Default Your favorite patchouli?

Patchouli is quickly becoming one of my absolutely favorite notes, especially in soliflore/patch-dominant scents. It's of course one of the most commonly found notes of all and to be found in countless variations - but which patchouli-heavy frag is your personal favorite?
My own vote goes to Bornéo 1834 for its dark dry camphorous "jungle patch" vibe, but I love most of the scents on the list; the Etro, Comme des Garcons, Chanel, Villoresi, Profumum, SMN, L'Artisan... Which one is your pick? Or maybe I didn't even list it...?

To My Nose; Sombre Negra by YOSH has by far the best "blended" patchouli note - earthy yet vibrant.
I've tried those you have mentioned with the addition of Patchouli Patch by L'Artisan.

Givenchy Gentleman for me. Intoxicating from the moment of application, and superb for the next six to eight hours. Later, it lingers on your shirt, smelling just great the next day even. Best patchouli ever in my book. Well-tamed and controlled. No ridiculous late-'60s hippie vibe, just a fine, fine masculine fragrance. Huge compliment-getter, too. Women and men have complimented it on me - and I wear only two short sprays to the chest.

I'm also fond of Coromandel, but it's more for special fragrance binge wear only, IMO. A bit too powerful for the office, and borderline too powerful for some street wear, unless you apply only the lightest touch.

Great options in this poll, but I too had to go for Givenchy Gentleman - an iconic fragrance and also one of my #1 compliment getters. I love some of the other pricier ones, too, but I had to give the Gentleman the respect he deserves.

I voted for Other, and Sombre Negra was the other i was thinking of. But, it is the winter 2010 limited edition Sombre Negra.
    Notes are:
Patchouli, Teak, Vetiver, Tobacco, Choya loban, Opoponax, Davana, Cypress, Mushroom, Pink pepper, Black pepper, Oak moss

Yosh released a newer Sombre Negra into the permanent lineup which is a completely different scent. The current interpretation is:
Vetiver, patchouli, cedar, olibanum, pink pepperberry and black peppercorn, clove, juniper, citrus, nutmeg, cumin, tonka and orris root

I am happy to see this thread because I too am a lover of patchouli fragrances. They are under appreciated. I have in my collection or have tried all of the list as well as many more and placed my votes according to my preferences which are for gentler and colder minty patchouli fragrances as opposed to the sweet or bold patch fragrs that usually have amber / vanilla / benzoin in the base.

Because I like these kinder/ gentler patchouli's my personal favorite is: (1) Santa Maria Novella, and then (2) Lorenzo Villoresi, (3) Nightscape, (4) Voleur de Roses, (5) M/Mink, (6) Micallef Patchouli. When it comes to bolder patchouli fragrances it is hard to beat Dior Patchouli Imperial, Mazzolari Patchouli, or Borneo 1834.

Coromandel is my favorite with Givenchy Gentleman a very close second. They don't really smell much alike so it's easy to justify owning them both. I've tried most of those listed in the poll but don't care for most of them because the patchouli is too strong but it's used so judiciously in both Coromandel and Gentleman. I included Nobile 1942 as well because it's a soft amberish patchouli to me - still strong but just barely pushing the limit.

    A very underrated note.

I don't like it when vetiver is too dominant like Reminiscence's Patchouli series. I prefer it with other resins like borneo 1834, Lumiere Noir pour Homme and so on.

The Dior vetiver is very nice because is it patchouli but without the dank, damp and earthy aspect and more of the crisp green like fragrant side of the plant.

    from lelabo.com

Even though it is vital to the olfactory shock this perfume generates, Patchouli is not easy to detect in this formula. The smoky, leathery character of birch takes over in the first few seconds, making this signature absolutely unique and difficult to situate. Fortunately, a touch of vanilla comes in to calm this little world, bringing peace, sensuality and softness to these violent animal notes.
A scent filled with danger for those of us who like to walk a tight rope…
They added the above in bold recently. It wasn't there 3 years ago.

Count me in as a fan of patchouli but I prefer patchouli's more floral aspect which is probably why I picked Histoires de Parfums Patchouli Noir.

I prefer it executed with a lighter hand, so the comparatively subtle feel of the patchouli in Ulrich Lang Nightscape suits me just fine. Beautifuly done IMO.

Among the ones you listed my preference go to Mazzolari Lui, Patchouli Noir and Intrigant Patchouli. I'll add, not included in your list, Cozè which is a great woody-patch with some dirtiness added and nice edilbe juxtapositions and Hungry Hungry Hippies which is the typical head-shop patch with some cocoa thrown in and a cannabis accent. Sombre Negra is terrific for anyone who's into extremely earthy stuff.

As much as I love CDG, I dont find Luxe Patchouli to be patch-centered. More of an immortelle bomb in my book...

I love Borneo I just wish it had more power - it's so subtle after just a couple of hours. As for it's scent, it's my favourite patchouli soliflore.
But overall - it would go to Intrigant Patchouli which is outstanding to me

It's an odd one for me because I was surrounded by a dense cloud of the stuff in the late 60's, early 70's. It really was everywhere, I avoided it then and I studiously avoided it over the next few decades. Recently I have relaxed with it, but still with a sort of nostalgia tinged irony - I don't go looking for it. I like it in:

    Coromandel (Dior)
    Eau des Iles (MPG)
    Mazzolari Lui
    Givenchy Gentleman
    Patchouli Antique (Les Nereides)

Coromandel is the frag which turned me around on patchouli, snatching it away from "dirty hippie" associations and demonstrating that a fine perfumer's patchouli is an entirely different thing. Such a beautiful composition. Now I pick out the warm earthiness of patchouli notes in many of my favorite fragrances, and I'm glad to find it. Its timbre is often key.

I'm much more interested in trying Givenchy Gentleman after seeing it come up so many times on this thread, but I don't have ready access to the vintage. Can anyone comment on whether more recent formulations are still worth a bottle? Does this frag also avoid the hippie style of patchouli?

The modern version of Gentleman has a reputation
as one of the better reformulations out there.

And Gentleman is nowhere near hippie patch!

Thank you, everybody. It seems Coromandel, Gentleman and Borneo are the 3 big stars in the patchouli department. I've enjoyed reading your responses, and while I did expect the Chanel and the Lutens to score big, I was actually quite surprised with the very strong enthusiasm for the Givenchy. Wonderful. At the other end of the scale, I was equally surprised that Etro and Profumum got so relatively few votes. Very interesting to now have a clearer picture of what's hot in the "patchouli field" right now . Thanks! And do feel free to go on voting, guys, the poll stays open!

Not much designer love here! What about all the Mugler fragrances. Ice Men, and the original A*Men have to be on any patchouli list in my book.

I'm surprised Zino hasn't been mentioned. I know it's not a straight-up patch, but to me it's the strongest note by a mile.

EDIT - not saying it's my favourite (I won't be replacing my bottle) but I know there's a lot of love for the vintage formulation.

I've tried several but end up buying Nobile 1942 Patchouli Nobile FB. I really enjoy it.

Since posting in 2012, a current one which i enjoy is Javanese Patchouli by Zegna from the Essenza Collection

Lumiere Noire, mostly because its rose-patch and not a patch bomb, which I suppose undermines the intent of the thread. Lol. In either case it's excellent.

Lumiere Noire has been watered down, the patchouli is barely noticeable in the new bottles I tested at NM.

My vote would go to Bois 1920 Realy Patchouly.
