Indeed. Best-sellers and popular crowd-pleasers are seldom 'great', from techical standpoints. All the stars (concept, quality, technique, originality, timing, sales & marketing, etc) probably need to align before we get another Chanel No. 5 or Shalimar phenomenon.

I think the point is if enough people don't like a frag (or art for that matter) then you could say it was overrated, but that would take a huge poll. The sales figures and longevity themselves surely bear out the facts. If enough people like it to make it a success, then either the sales marketing was pretty good or it isn't overrated. If the former, then it just wouldn't last long. If anything has been around for some time, and isn't particularly cheap, then it must be regularly rated pretty well and rated over the competition by somebody holding a purse or wallet.
Only have tried it once, not sure which version and if it was in good condition, but +1 No 5.
Also really can't see the attraction of Tommy Girl which seems to have
been massively popular and receives good reviews from experienced noses still.
As for overrated online, on BN and Fragrantica, probably Dirty English. Safari too. I'd even have to add Devin, though it's not a bad scent.
I think Mitsouko. I've tried it and I didn't like it. Maybe the vintage one is better but I find Shalimar superior to it.
I've also tried No.5-didn't like it . No.19 is much better imo.
Just a curiosity: I've asked many women, ages 25-50, ( including my wife) if they like No.5 and every time I got negative answers.
Not on the female board!Well, obviously for a fragrance to sell so well over so many years it must have something going for it - other than a name. Except for le Monstre No. 5, which is - IMHO - overrated. I think it is well accepted that it is overrated, but it sells because it is Chanel, le Monstre. But here again, we are talking about marketing and public perception. Not to say that there are not plenty of people who genuinely love No. 5, myself included depending on which day you ask me, but I think there are far more bottles of No. 5 sold than there are people who really love thefragrance. Personally, I'm just as happy - happier in fact - to wear my drugstore Chantilly. It has the same strange metallic note that No. 5 edt does on my skin, except that that note fades faster in Chantilly.
Ciprian, I do not like to wear Mitsouko. Every time I try I must scrub it off. But I love it anyway. I wish I could enjoy it. I think it is beautiful and evocative of all kinds of things, but I just can't wear it. It is not meant for me. It is alien and does not become part of me. In that case, I wouldn't say it is overrated, just not for me. Again...just my opinion.![]()
Any and all fragrances by
CREED
I have smelled and analyzed all of them and there isn't a single one I feel is worthy of retaining my interest. This, obviously, is merely my own opinion. I do not intend to present it in the guise of fact.
As it is said in French: Les Gouts et les couleurs ne se dicutent pas.

"...a Chacun son Mauvais Gout."
Terre d'Hermes is the most overrated, I think. I just don't get what people see in this one.
Pure Malt is up there too.

Aventus and Creed aren't overrated. At least in my eyes. I also love Pure Malt and Cool Water. But this is just me.
They don't appeal to everyone, but the people these all appeal to, seem to love it.
If I had to pick one fragrance that's overrated, it would be Issey Miyake.
Tobacco Vanille - lovely opening and then a mind numbing relentless vanilla that probably comes staright off the shelf at one of the labs. A textbook case of front loading IMO.
Agreed. Tobacco Vanille: The first 5 min. are wonderful...then the dry down I could get from spritzing a bottle of vanilla extract on me.
As for Creed and especially Aventus...Even if they had longevity, and even if I even half liked Aventus...They are so over analyzed, and over talked about it makes me sick...COME ON...I followed a 3-page thread explaining the variations of the BATCH NUMBERS of AVENTUS!! GAG...

True, you can tell I am addicted to Basenotes!!! I get email notices every time someone posts in a thread I post in, so 5-6 times a day I was getting emails about desperate people pleading for any information about batch number RT559565CVC$$#55343434

Another tactic by Creed to make them appear more exclusive.
Don't believe the hype.
I think there are many of us out there getting our inboxes flooded all day long.
We are all addicts...
I don't think Aventus is overrated as much as it is over hyped. It's mentioned so often these days that it becomes anticlimactic when people try it.
Send me some and I'll tell you.... lol
Estee Lauder Pleasures. Chanel No5 is great art.
Habanita! Even tho it has been around forever. It is bloody good!!! ♥♥♥♥♥
