Default Shalimar Ode a la Vanille (2012)

Picked this up in duty free last week:

I've only given it a quick test, but it's very nice - richer than the standard EdP. I never tried the last Ode a la Vanille.

Thanks for posting my other half loves Ode a la Vanille so much so she bought more than one bottle. I'm not sure if she knows it has been re-released I may be able to surprise her.

I agree about it being superior to the current EdP on shelves. I am a big fan of it R, I think I would wear it more if I had a backup bottle but they're hard to find here. Maybe I'll pick this up at the Guerlain boutique when we're in Vegas in a couple weeks.

There is a brightness to the top notes (I think it was Mr. Guerlain who said it was grapefruit?) that offsets the bergamot nicely - but the sweet vanilla richness that whooshes in right afterward is what ultimately I find very pleasing. It is my **favorite** flanker of Shalimar, although I really do enjoy Shalimar Eau Legere, but for different reasons. The SOALV is 'darker' than the Legere, giving it a comfy, spicy, woody feel that I enjoy at night (and at bedtime). Oh how I wish they'd make a Shower Gel or Lotion/Cream in this scent. I'd buy it immediately!

I agree Mike, a shower get would be really nice. I have the original limited edition, is this a new LE or did they add it to the regular line?

OK - I'm really testing it now. I'll type my impressions as I go.

This is unexpected. Maybe it's the grapefruit? It does a remarkable job of recreating the initial impression that vintage Shalimar makes when first applied. A bit of bitter smokiness - that kerosene sting. I'm not comparing this to the vintage side-by-side, but it seems like a very convincing image of the opening of a vintage Shalimar but constructed with different ingredients. I love this. If that was the intention, I am impressed. This is Wasser? If so, his best work to my nose yet.

After that impressive start, it mellows out and quiets down. The vanilla starts to come forward, and overall it's much less fortissimo. It still has that vintagey accord buried in there, but the illusion starts to break down a bit. The opening would perhaps have had me doubting myself if I didn't know what I was sniffing - this is not like that. It's getting lighter and it's not as extravagantly floral or resinous as the vintage juice. Still very nice though.

OK - I'm not going to wait around for it to develop more, but maybe I'll come back and update if anyone's interested.

furrypine - this is a new version, subtitled "Sur la Route de Madagascar" and has been formulated with a newly-sourced vanilla from, as you might guess, Madagascar (I think in addition to the standard smoky synthetic vanilla that Shalimar is famous for). I think it is another limited edition - if I recall correctly, it was labeled as such at the shop.

I own the 2010 edition and absolutely love it. Might get this one as well, just to stock up.

I find the basenotes just as satisfying rubegon as those initial top notes that I agree are definitely a nod to 'vintage' juice. When I wear it to bed, the next morning I can smell the vanilla/amber/woods as soon as I step into a hot shower. There's, naturally, a flatness to this that most modern juices have - nothing like the depth that the vintage juice has. As I've said before, most vintage Shalimar has Mysore sandalwood - just that little detail I'm sure doesn't allow the new juice to be as complex...in addition to who-knows-how-many other little things that are banned or got 'cut' because they're not cost-effective anymore.

Also, the 'Madagascar' subtitle in this release - wasn't it mentioned in the previous 1st release? I could have sworn it was...

I don't know. I thought I read on Monsieur Guerlain's news page that this was the new bit, but I've never seen the original release.

The first release didn't impress me, but this one is much more appealing with its nod to vintage Shalimar, as noted above. I only tested this on a blotter and will have to go back to try it on skin. The vanilla smells woodier than the previous version, which was Mayotte vanilla.

Bought blind and love it. Imo better than current EdP. Much better drydown with dry vanilla and spices. No artificial plastic note...

I think the 2012 was Mayotte + Madagascar, featuring a pair of vanillas and this is a different, recent Madagascar vanilla according to the press I saw. Very keen to try it, the first one is superb, I picked up an extra bottle when it was around - a rare moment of clarity . . .

This 2012 Shalimar flanker lasts 8-10 hours on my skin. YMMV.

Yeah, that's a ripoff. It was 90EUR at the Guerlain shop in Paris and 72EUR I think in the duty free shop at CDG.

I totally agree with you, and I also like it better than the 2010 version.

I would like to try this. Every time I'm in a store that sells fragrances, I make it a point to smell Shalimar. It smells different to me every time, and I like it more and more!!! (I think it's too...old? mature? for me, but I am liking it none the less.) The first time I smelled it I thought it absolutely REEKED. The second time, I thought "wow this smells like frankincense and myrrh. How did I not notice this before?" And today it smelled different yet again.

I'm very, very curious about the vanilla version though.

I found this shocking to be honest but then I don't expect any better from today's Guerlain.

Finally trying it this evening and my initial reaction is similar to a few friends who pick up on Shalimar Extrait from a decade or two ago - wonderful stuff.

The 2010 was superb, will A/ B with this over the next week or so.
