Default Chanel's top 4 heavy hitters. Head to head to head to head :D

Hey guys, like the average person I have a tight budget and cannot afford to go crazy and buy everything I desire on the market.
After testing a number of Chanel fragrances I have narrowed down the 4 that I enjoy the most, but unfortunately can only pick one to purchase.

    -Allure Homme Sport,
    -Bleu De Chanel,
    -Platinum Egoiste
    -Edition Blanche.

If you guys had to choose only one of the above fragrances which one would it be ? and how do they compare in the follow categories:

    -Longevity
    -Projection
    -Sillage
    -Compliments
The sense of smell, like a faithful counsellor, foretells its character.

Blue de Chanel - average in all categories.
Very nice fragrance but personally it's hard to choose between all of those

Being a fan of Chanel I have owned all of the above. From my personal experience my two favorites from the list are Platinum Egoiste and Edition Blanche. Bleu is a nice scent but like ADG has become easily recognized. For some reason Platinum Egoiste garners me the most compliments from strangers. You will not have a problem with projection or how long it lasts. Edition Blanche is also very nice.

bleu de chanel wins as platinum egoiste has poor longevity on me and bleu lasts all day..

Yeah - no offense, but I also think you have narrowed it down to the 4 worst masculines that Chanel produces today. These are Chanel's answer to the mass market that exists for this style of fragrance. They are chasing the money, and charging a premium for it.

If you really want this style, you can probably get something that you will like as much for half the price of a Chanel. Having said that, if you are going to get one of these, I'd say get Bleu. I don't like it, but Redneck Perfumisto loves it, and if he does it must have something going for it.

He narrowed his list down to the 4 that HE likes most, not the 4 that the community prefers.
Of your 4, I would go with Bleu De Chanel. Smells great, lasts awhile, and is appealing to most people (I can not see anyone not liking this Bleu).

I tried liking AHS, but it just smells bitter on my skin.
I liked PE, but for the price I would rather just go with A&F Fierce (mind you, I am a younger guy)
I recall trying Edition Blanche, I liked it but was not impressed.

From the four in your list -- none of them.

Make sure to try the original Egoiste (with black cap) and the original Allure Homme.

The last three are better in their vintage formulations, most of which can easily be found for reasonable prices:

    Egoiste
    Pour Monsieur
    Antaeus

-- I will say that Chanel did Bleu de Chanel a lot better than Amouage did its own version of Bleu de Chanel in Epic Man.

Damn, people are unnecessarily harsh....seriously...the guy didn't ask opinions on whether people thought the 4 he selected were the best or worst offerings of Chanel...so yes, saying that is offensive (as well as rude & off-topic) IMO. Obviously he likes these 4 frags, so why knock them like that in his own thread? I just don't get it. Anyway....

Based on the selection and question, Platinum Egoiste wins hands down in all categories for me.

I agree with you. Its not very nice to put all four fragrances down since they are all OP's choices. Anyway, I would go for PE its on my to buy list!
    Current Top 5:
    1. Frederic Malle L'eau d'Hiver
    2. Tom Ford Noir de Noir

This is my point. Why pay Chanel prices when you can get something similar for half the price? You could say the same for the rest of these.

To each his own taste - I'm not telling the OP not to like these fragrances. I'm just saying that if this is the style he likes, he can get just as good or better without paying a big premium for the Chanel name.

If I'm getting a Chanel, I want something unique and innovative that's not like anything else on the market - not some derivative stuff that they've cynically cranked out to cash in on the big market for generic synthetic fresh woody aquatics.

    Own and love these 2:
    1. Allure Homme Edition Blanche
    2. Allure Pour Homme Sport

For "Sport/Summer" fragrances, they have excellent longevity, and get a lot of compliments.

The other 2 are very lacking IMO.

But you should base your choice on what YOU like most!
    Seasonal favorites:

    1. Creed - Pure White Cologne
    2. Creed - Aventus
    3. Tom Ford - Grey Vetiver
    4.
by Kilian - Straight to Heaven
    5. Clive Christian - 1872
    6. Montale - Aoud Legacy
    7. Xerjoff - Nio
    8. Neela Vermeire - Bombay Bling
    9. The Different Company - De Bachmakov
    10. Chanel - Allure Homme Edition Blanche

Of the ones mentioned, only Platinum Egöiste and Allure

Among the ones by the House: Pour Monsieur, Egöiste, Antaeus, Sycomore. Jersey and Coromandel are nice albeit too sillage-wise for my tastes.

If you absolutely must buy one of these 4, then I guess Edition Blanche, but I say that unenthusiastically. I, like others encourage you to seek out other offerings from Chanel if that is your house of choice... Sycomore and Antaeus are my alternate recommendations if you have not already tried them.
    Current Top Favorites:
    1) Portrait of a Lady (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4) Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    6) Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)

    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)

Maby not the fuzzy "Basenoters" favorits, but those scents are very popular and crowd pleasers. IMO Edition Blanche is one of the most classy and well blended lemon fragrances on the market. Well done Mr. Polge!

In my opinion, Bleu de Chanel. I do not like the original Egoiste whatsoever.

Well, looking at some of the above posts fragrance snobs have struck yet again (rolls eyes). Dude says he's an average person with a tight budget looking to get something nice from Chanel and has narrowed it to 4 choices, and you get people talking bout trying vintage versions of outdated, borderline niche fragrances from Chanel. Only on fucking basenotes

OP, Bleu De Chanel is my pick for the compliments, the other criteria are a tie between all of your choices except Blanche. Overall, I would choose Bleu de Chanel.

Understood, and agreed (partially). The one's the OP posted are HIS favorite scents from the Chanel line. There's a good chance he has tried many of the one's the rest of us have posted here, he simply did not like them/could not afford them. I do agree, if you can avoid paying the Chanel price tag, do it. I personally do not own ANY of their fragrances, the only one I have come close to purchasing is Bleu, simply because I can not find a substitute for it.
Ex: I purchased Fierce instead of PE, Perry Ellis M instead of Allure Homme, and I am currently looking for a similar fragrance to both Bleu and EB.

When the title of the thread refers to "Chanel's top 4 heavy hitters," IMO it's fair to express disagreement with that characterization.

If the OP had just asked advice about the fragrances in question, especially qualifying it by saying, "I know the general consensus is that these aren't the top Chanels, but they're the ones I personally like the best," I think the negative comments would be significantly more muted.
Just because it happened to you doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

No offence taken guys, many have suggested Sycamore out of the Chanel line which I already have a few 10ml decants of. I was looking for something that was safe and pleasant, and just something that is very reliable casually.
As bad as this may sound, I'm after a people pleaser a little more than something that would please my nose.

It's fair to say everyone needs at least a few of those fragrances which aren't very risky.

^Agreed. The herd mentality is pretty lame here. If a fragrance is too popular in real life then it's considered too generic or just a shitty fragrance on Basenotes. The OP asked for opinions from his 4 choices, not what the most beloved men's Chanel frags are on this forum. I personally prefer Egoiste and some of the Le Exclusifs to his choices, but that's not what this thread is about. So to answer his question:

I personally like Bleu de Chanel and Edition Blanche the most out of your four choices. I haven't worn AHS and I traded Platinum Egoiste for the original Egoiste b/c PE smells like A&F Fierce and I already own Fierce. Plus PE makes me sneeze a lot and had crap longevity. I think that Bleu is more likely to give you compliments and is more versatile and longer lasting/stronger projecting than EDB so I'll go with Bleu. EDB is a close 2nd amongst your choices and one I'd recommend to pick up later on down the road if the funds allow.

Bleu would be my choice, it outperforms all the other three in all categories on my skin.

After testing a number of Chanel fragrances I have narrowed down the 4 that I enjoy the most, but unfortunately can only pick one to purchase.

    -Allure Homme Sport,
    -Bleu De Chanel,
    -Platinum Egoiste
    -Edition Blanche.

If you guys had to choose only one of the above fragrances which one would it be ? and how do they compare in the follow categories:

    -Longevity
    -Projection
    -Sillage
    -Compliments
I own Bleu De Chanel and Platinum Egoiste and tried Allure Homme Sport and Edition Blanche once (I wont rate this 2 but they didnt have great longevity or projection on my skin (longevity like 6-8 hours top, projection average). None of them belong to my total favourites but I will try to compare just BDC and PE.

Longevity: Bleu De Chanel > Platinum Egoiste
Projection/Sillage: Bleu De Chanel > Platinum Egoiste
Compliments: Platinum Egoiste > Bleu De Chanel

BDC projects lot and makes me sneeze so I started to use it just on back of my neck.

    TOP 5 cold weather:

    1. L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme Extreme

I go for Chanel No. 19. A green leather scent and wonderful in the EDP. The EDT is also great for warm days.

THIS. Chanel is advertising this one heavily on TV right now. I'm pretty sure I saw ads for Bleu during SNL and Sunday Night Football. For me, that's a reason NOT to buy it. If you're single and dating, the worst thing you can choose is a scent her brother wears... or her dad, or cousin... or, worse... her ex boyfriend. There's no way to prevent that sort of thing entirely, but you lower your odds substantially by avoiding the biggest of the top sellers.

I agree, that does happen. I view fragrance popularity differently though. For me, it's about avoiding scents that may make me smell like someone else, especially when it comes to dating. Years ago, I set up a female coworker with a friend of mine. The three of us met for drinks and had a great time, then I made up an excuse to leave so they'd end up hanging out. They were such a perfect match. The next day, I asked her how it went and she said something like "Oh, he's a nice guy but he reminded me of my brother. I just couldn't get past it." I was baffled. My friend and her brother had absolutely nothing in common. It kind of blew my mind. Anyway... a few weeks later, her brother dropped by work to meet her for lunch and she introduced me. And BOOM! It hit me: THIS GUY SMELLS LIKE (my friend) MIKE!

    Friggin' AdG.

I know people on BN like to bash popular scents, but not me. AdG is excellent. But I won't buy it because the risk of having that exact same thing happen to me is too high. Granted, I'm sure there are guys who wear my favorite Gucci Pour Homme II, and maybe someday I'll end up on a date with a woman who dated one of those guys... but the odds are so much lower than the odds of being on a date with a woman whose ex wore AdG.

If Chanel keeps running those ads, Bleu is going to be everywhere this fall. Any uniqueness associated with the scent will be gone.
