Default Trying to pick a first scent. Here are some things about me.

I am a (male) hairdresser by trade. I dress sharp and I am clean cut. I live in the Colorado mountains and enjoy the forest as well as anything outdoors. I love to garden in the summer, poppies are my favorite flowers to grow. I am a musician and play accordion, which lets off a pleasant wood aroma. I found that I haven't cared for too many scents I have tried. Aqua is too strong, some earthy and woody tones are too musky and heavy. I found that I really liked this citrus-esque fragrance I found at Gap. I was thinking about buying it but I didn't want to rush into anything.

I like citrus and light (not musky) woody/earthy tones. Something light but also appealing to women. It's my first one so it will have to be rather versatile and classic as I have no other scents. Budget is really no issue, and I can take a few suggestions and try them out over the weekend. I have never worn a scent before, because frankly, I don't smell like anything at all. My girlfriend wears sensual amber a lot. I think she smells good, I also want her to think I smell good.

    Thank you for your help

TdH for sure. That pretty much sounds like what you are looking for. I've never personally smelled it, but it's note profile is nice and it's got to be popular for a reason.

EDIT: I mean, if you want pure citrus, you could check out Bond No.9 Little Italy. It's a pretty damn strong citrus from what I hear (once again no personal experience).

    Welcome!

As I was reading your description, I had the same reaction as previous posters. Terre d'Hermes, a light citrus that turns slowly into a slightly earthy mineralic scent. Not extremely exciting, but very smooth and pleasant, and certainly it won't disturb clients. In general, the more recent Hermes are characterized by a light touch, eg Voyage, Concentree d'Oranges vertes etc.
Remember that citrus is fleeting, so most citrus frags are either short lived or transform into something else, usually unpleasant or sharp.

terre d hermes smells like sawdust after an hour, at least to me. it makes me feel like i'm at a sawmill, and very thirsty too.

so try everything and buy what you like.

I love Little Italy, I own a full bottle. It is straight up citrus and that is what I love about it, so if straight up citrus is your thing, you can't go wrong with this one.
I don't have much experience with accordions, but if you like a sort of instrument woody scent I would recommend Comme des Garcons Palisander. It's a rosewoody fragrance that I love. It's different, but really smooth and amazing.

+3? I thought this too...although I will say try to test it first. It's sort of a hit or miss type of frag, as it does really well on some people's skin and not so well on others. If you like it though, it'll likely become one of your early favorites.

I'd say give Original Vetiver by Creed a sniff. It's crisp and clean and citric, but has just a whisper of earthiness.

As I read it I thought Terre De Hermes, but rather than leave it at another + for that one, I'd also recommend trying:

    Kenzo Homme Boisee

Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de L'Homme

Gucci Envy (Apparently harder to find now, but a really fantastic woody scent)

Mugler Cologne - A nice versatile citrus fragrance, my go to work scent when I can't decide (gets some comparison to Creed Original Vetiver, which I haven't tried yet)

Most importantly, test and test some more. There's so many scents out there, and you may find something that really works with your chemistry and personality, in the bottle that you hadn't expected to find it in. Happy hunting!

    +1 on Monsieur Balmain.

Also try Eau de Rochas Homme - a sparkling green citrus with a wallet friendly price tag. You can still find it online.

I came back to agree that Original Vetiver by Creed would be lovely for you. Check out a sample at NM or somewhere online (BeautyEncounter has good prices, never ordered from them though).

I love the smell of accordion! As far as you fragrance search - sample, sample, sample. Not too many at once, obviously - but we could be recommending things until the cows come home, but until you have it on your skin, it's all theory. Take your time and enjoy.

Do try the Armani Code Sport and as suggested, the TDH. It appears to be right up your alley.

No joke; I like Terre d'Hermes too, but it's not cheap.

Garrett, have you tried any vetivers? Some of them are also light and citrusy. My favourits one is Encre noire, but that's not too light. But someone else mentioned a Creed (Original Vetiver), and there are others: Tom Ford, Guerlain, etc.

I suggest you try Ivy League - PC has samples. On me it smells very fresh and natural - very strong fresh pine in the opening and then woody floral.

I liked it on me and I think I'd also like it on a guy.

It's hard to find though - I think it's only available in Europe. But that might be an advantage for you - not a lot of other people would be wearing it. [And if you cant find a bottle, you could just order large size samples from PC. Im thinking of doing that.]

Lime Basil Mandarin by Jo Malone! It is a beautiful citrus with woods and herbs, not sharp and very natural smelling, deepens over time getting better and better, good longevity too. Another suggestion would be Tom Ford Gray Vetiver, a light earthy scent.
