Default Newbie in need of advice.

Very new to this forum and the whole world of scents I have always chosen my scents in the past based on designer names and tv adverts it is only recently a change in my shaving moving to the traditional way of shaving I learnt more I am now looking to find my signature scent. I am looking for a high quality scent that will last. ATM I have about a quarter of a bottle of creed millesime imperial which I truly like and I am also using a floris no 89 I think it is. Post shave I am a massive fan of the taylors of old bond street sandalwood aftershave lotion. I am looking for people to help and suggest others I can try I am trying to keep to proper fragrance houses rather than designer brands if you know what mean.

Creed Silver Mountain Water is nice. If you are in the US, then you can usually find 5ml and 10ml decants on ebay.

Check ebay for other decants as well. I've had good luck with all of my purchases so far.

Sartorial by Penhaligon's - Upon application, one is treated to a remarkable, barbershop accord. This clean melange is an amalgamation of the green, mowed grass of violet leaf, the sour, orangey neroli, the mildly sweet cardamom, the spicy black pepper as well as the candied sharpness of ginger. An interesting aura of ephemeral steam as well as an errant, metallic something intrude; and aldehydes impart their laundered linen effect. Meandering to the awaiting middle, muguet-like cyclamen, sweetly green linden bloosom, as well as the freshness of lavender lovingly add their veiled, floral facets to the somewhat stuffy opening. This exquisite heart is wonderfully showered with earthy and buttery beeswax yielding a slightly carmelized blend, while hints of leather flitter about. Transitioning to the commonplace base, balsamic gurgum wood, clean oakmoss, dry cedar, fleeting driftwood, vanillic tonka bean, boggy patchouli, soapy white musk, faintly powdery amber, woody myrrh as well as some source of oiliness, all combine as the groundwork for the refreshing drydown. This composition is constructed and layered well, with good longevity and projection.

YSL Rive Gauche PH has a lovely barbershop smell to it though it's "brand" it's not a commonly worn fragrance. It's sillage and longevity is respectable as well.

Good suggestions already. You could also check some of the traditional Carons, like Troisieme Homme (musky barbershop fougere), or Caron pour un homme (lavender vanilla).

My advice is to just keep looking on your own and follow your nose. Yes there is a vast world out there, but basenotes is a good place to help you search. Read reviews, keep your eye on the forum, try to obtain an objective grasp of what it is you like in a fragrance, and search based on that. Then challenge your own tastes. Have fun with the search.

Next to nobody has found a signature scent around here - mainly because if you do have one, you will start to suffer from olfactory block after a few days and you will have a hard time smelling it.

Having a signature scent is akin to having signature clothes - like uniforms. What's the point?

If you are a fan of sandalwood aftershave why not check out strongly sandalwood scents like Art of Shaving Sandalwood, Trumpers Sandalwood Cologne, Chanel Egoiste, Gucci Envy, Floris Santal, or Villoresi Sandolo as a starting point?
