Thread: Best Patchouli?

    Default Best Patchouli?

I've been sampling the Histoires de Parfums line, and have been intrigued by Noir Patchouli. And then I realized that this is an entirely new note and realm for me.

What are some of the best Patchouli's out there? When do you like to wear a patchouli? Are there other frags that are well blended, but are patchouli prominent? Are there masculine or femme versions, so to speak - or all just uni?

    Thanks!

as you know, there's no 'best', but I like Coromandel & Borneo 1834 the best from the 6-7 different ones I tried from Lucky Scent.
Coromandel is Chanel, which is pretty nice but a bit to girly for me. Borneo is nice, but fleeting. Huge sillage for the first hour, then all but dead thereafter.

so far, I have yet to find my 'perfect patchouli'

if you liked Noir Patchouli, then Chanel's Coromandel is a refined and lighter version of the same.

my other favorites (other than the two above) are, Parfumerie Generale's Intrigrant Patchouli. i woldnt consider L'Ombre Fuave as a patch prominent scent.

Bois 1920's real Patchouly too is a nice one.

last but not the least - L'Artisan Parfumer's Patchouli Patch.

Nasomatto Hindu Grass--my new love! I call it Green Plaid Patchouli--drydown is awesome.
Your nostrils, which will dilate immesurably in unspeakable contentment, in motionless ecstasy, will ask nothing better for space, for they will be full of fragrance, as if perfumes and incense; for they will be glutted with complete happiness, like angels who dwell in the peace and magnificence of pleasent heaven.

I was referring to Lui but I suppose if you wore 6-7 sprays you'd also turn into a beast.

Has that unmistakable patchouli edge but also totally comforting. I love this stuff beyond belief.

We've had lots of these patchouli threads lately! The fact is there are so many great patchouli fragrances that you just have to keep trying them until find one that fits you. I wear different ones for different moods. My favorites still are:

Nightscape by Ulrich Lang New York - it is a silvery light musk patchouli - definitely reminds me of a cool night on the streets in the city.

M/M Ink by Byredo - dark ink and light persistent patchouli with a bit of animalism. A soft and very sensual patchouli.

Villoresi Patchouli - Wearing this patchouli reminds of descending deep into the earth exploring a cave - damp, rooty, earthy but mostly cold and dark.

IMHO, the best straight-forward patchouli scents are usually created by Italian perfume houses...

I like that, but I hope it does not smell like the best green gift on earth

What does it smell like? And what kinda person wears it?

lol @ what kinda person wears it. Made me feel like a freak or theres some sorta weird criteria I must meet to wear it.
    Doesnt smell like marijuana.

Depends on whats with it (like vetiver) or how concentrated is the other scent (like amber). But it smells earthy green. Not minty green nor citrusy. For example the Patchouli in SL's Borneo 1834 smells very heady, earthy whereas the Patchouli in Purple Patchouli by Tom Ford is, well , magical.

i'm a big patchouli fan and would recommend

    for straighforward patchouli
    montale patchouli leaves
    farmacia patchouli indonesia

    for non-straighforward interpretations:
    Mazzolari Patchouli
    ,, Lui
    Givenchy Gentleman (old formulation)

    for very non-straightfoward: coromandel.
I think is great as a piece of art in itself, to see what sheldrake did with the patchouli note is amazing, but in terms of how good it is as a patchouli based scent hmmm i would go for mazzolari patchouli.
I take a bottle of wine and I go drink it among the flowers.
We are always three ... counting my shadow and my friend the shimmering moon
Happily the moon knows nothing of drinking, and my shadow is never thirsty
When I sing, the moon listens to me in silence. When I dance, my shadow dances too.
After all festivities the guests must depart. This sadness I do not know.
When I go home, the moon goes with me and my shadow follows me

Nice review Tonyprince. We are definitely both underground in the "cave" with this patchouli. A very nice colder patchouli - LV Patchouli better known as "Aqua di Caverna" by Lorenzo Villoresi.
