    Default Creed Aventus vs Timbuktu

Both have woody and earthy notes so fits quite well for a summer transition to fall type of frag.

Aventus seems more pleasing to others but you can argue that it is easily liked yet that makes it feel like its a bit commonplace
    Timbuktu more intellectual

So... What's your pick? The crowd pleaser or the intellectual fragrance.

Both are not as complex as orientals such as other smoky woody concoctions like Amouage Epic/Jubilation. But bear in mind that we are asking about a summer to fall type of fragrance where fresh fragrances are startling to lose its zing and yet you are not in the mood for someone too warm, ambery, or sweet just yet.

For example, Tam Dao may be even more straight forward than Aventus

Having owned Aventus since the middle of last year, I happened to try Timbuktu this summer. I like the opening and the mid notes but once it got into the dry-down it became a scrubber for me. Something in the dry down that was unnatural smelling and made me nauseous. I couldn't take it any more so the clothes went into the wash, as did I!!

So, I voted for Aventus easily. Totally inoffensive for me. OK, I can't wear it every day otherwise it wouldn't be a good one, but on me it's one fine, modern scent!!

Not an easy choice, Timb. Is more like a nice conversation while Aventus is a statement.
I enjoy the opening and over-al smell of aventus while I love the notes of Timb. and the sinphony it creates.
Mmm.. Both innofensive and social safe but as you said Timb. Beeing more intelectual maybe you'll enjoy smelling it more yourself than being a crowd pleaser. I say buy that one first, use it, you'll save some money and when you finish it go get Aventus.

Aventus. I tried a sample of Timbuktu once, wasn't my cup of tea. May need to give it another wearing some time.

own Timbuktu, but prefer Chanel Sycomore. Seems like it would fit the bill for what you are looking for. On the designer side, I revisited Burberry Brit today and thought that smelled pretty good for this time of year. Never found Aventus to be worth the asking price for me. Probably should just get a good sized decant (lots of them for sale) and see if my tune ever changes.

Lots of Timbuktu posts early on, but Aventus is the one crushing it in the polls. I had to vote Aventus.

Tried Sycomore which is nice. I categorise more of a smoky vetiver though, something between an encre noire and Vetiver Extraordinaire (which I own). A close comparison perhaps will be Terre d'Hermes.

I parted with TDH though, because although both Timbuktu and TDH are either, one is dry and resinous (a mini oriental) and the other dry and earthy, so although they are in similar genre, I personally like Timbuktu more.

I prefer Timbuktu. Aventus is ok on skin, but on cloth I find isn't very nice at all.

so if you have doubts wich one of these then i think sycomore is perfect for you!!!
Timbuktu is the most original vetiver scent i think...it has this note that reminds me a lot of chamomile tea...and i like to wear it more in fall/winter time....then summer/fall

interesting observation. not looking at sycomore yet because i have VE, another vetiver frag - perhaps I'll take a whiff of it this weekend.

During the colder months, I suspect really pulling out the big guns like Jubilation or Portrait of a Lady.

Timbuktu is a masterpiece, but it's too discrete.
Aventus is boring after the epic opening is over, but it lasts longer, so...

A real lose-lose situation if you ask me!

To me, Aventus is more pleasant and easy to like. The "you smell fresh and good!" type of compliments, quite western in construction.

Wore Timbuktu yesterday and I got a best compliment ever. "what is that? you smell so sophisticated and special, jeez its amazing etc"

I guess a good analogy will between these 2 will be whether people like milk chocolate or dark chocolate. As you grow older, you probably will like dark, but that takes time.

My overall experiences with Creeds are that all of them are pleasant smelling, which is a good thing if you are looking for compliments, but then you start thinking whether the scents are challenging or interesting enough for the niche price you are paying for. A natural smelling, very pleasant niche scent that is a crowd pleaser may feel 'designerish' at times.
