Default At first sniff you recoil in horror... then come back...

...because even though the fragrance is so dirty and naughty, you want to smell it again.

What fragrance causes this reaction for you?

I used to experience something like that reaction a few years ago when I smelled Jicky/MKK/Oud27 and those type of frags. Not any more.

    Leather Oud
    MKK

I wouldn't say I "recoiled in horror" but I was a little put off. Now I quite enjoy both of them even though i'm still trying to find the courage to wear them in public.

Wouldn't call it dirty or naughty, but I did not like Tobacco Vanille whatsoever when I first sampled it. Now I enjoy it very much.

+1 MKK. On paper it is scary, but on skin it sits right. And +1 Oud 27. Dirty dirty dirty, but compelling.

+1 on Oud 27 and Jicky. Dubrana's Oud Caravan series (1,2 and 3). MKK never striked as particularly challenging to me, which doesn't mean I don't love it.

Was quite put off by Polo (original, green) in my first two samplings. But I was drawn back and grew to like it alot. Now I just have to get my wife to feel the same way.

    Terre d’Hermès EDT.

Hated this at first when I sniffed it in a store after hearing all the hype. A few months later I decided to give it another chance and fell in love.

I think I'm going through the same thing with Rive Gauche at the moment.

It's quite possibly because it doesn't smell like I thought it was going to, and my immediate thought was Not For Me. But I just cant stop thinking about it, and know I'm going to have to go back for seconds.

Ok, I just remembered that when I first smelled Bond no 9 NY Oud that I recoiled, but then I smelled it again and again each time I visited the Bond counter and it grew on me...still not a big fan of Oud, but it isn't as repulsive to me now.

Habit Rouge for me. I couldn't get over the camphor in the top notes. But I began to warm up to it after a few wearings. It takes a special frame of mind for me to make it a SOTD, but I genuinely enjoy it when I do.

I must agree. A bit difficult to stick your nose into this immediately after spraying for all the civet, but it turns into a thing of incredible beauty as time passes.

Yet another one for Joop! Homme. I honestly can't figure out what I disliked about it so much before. I find it quite pleasant now.

I know that feeling and your sentence describes perfectly my initial impression of many of the scents that are now my favorites. When you first start getting into fragrances, you're familiar only with the ubiquitous array of mass market scents (clean, fresh, unoffensive, generic, etc.) and other types of scents often strike you as incredibly dirty, bitter, outdated or ugly. I initially felt that way about things like Encre Noire, Eau de Gentiane Blanche, Etro Patchouly, Eau d'Hermès, etc. and today I really enjoy those and find them totally safe to wear. Among the things I own and wear all the time are a number of so-called "challenging" things like Leather Oud, MKK, Route du Vétiver, M/Mink, Mouchoir de Monsieur, and Villoresi Vetiver. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed scents like that 5 or 7 seven years ago, and I realize that it's really only my experience and sensitivity to smell and the quality of ingredients and blending that's changed since I started out, nothing else. Today, my rule of thumb is almost that if something smells strange, unusual or bad in a conventional sense - give it another chance. So much on the fragrance market is simply too easy, just pretty and without that "wow effect" that makes you stop and actually feel something - whether that feeling be horror, wonder, amazement, or whatever.
