Default Why does Amouage Reflection Man have so many negative reviews?

There are hugely contrasting opinions on this fragrance, a lot of prominent youtube reviewers claim it's by far their most complimented scent and the general consensus on this forum seems to be positive and yet the ratio of positive to negative reviews is incredibly unflattering. Any reason for this?

Many basenoters find it too "commercial" and similar to Le Male, which is very much disliked by basenoters.
Amouage making a LeMale-like scent is a big turnoff to the critics - like they sold out or something.

    I think it's a great scent!

Because it smells like the horrendous LeMale...........

The important thing is whether you like it or not.

I can only speak for myself in that it smells to me like a powdery hybrid of la male and joop. There is also something sickly about the scent that rubbed me the wrong way.

I love it, it smells like a refined, sophisticated Le Male. The only negative is the longevity, it barely lasts two hours on me. I wish they did a extrait version.

I don't know Le Male that well, but I get a moth ball blast from Reflexion. Considering my missus' negative reaction I'm too shy to wear it outside. I kinda like the way it completely takes over; its overwhelming and probably not in a very good way.

I love it also, but for me lasts all day, with monster projection.

I love it. But for an Amouage, it's fairly "safe". That could be part of it.

There are negative reviews cuz it's just not that great IMO.

The opening is beautiful, but the drydown leaves me disappointed. Maybe that's why its reviews are so polarizing.

I don't like it att all. Theres something in Reflection that makes me a little sick, it is unwearable for me. I like Le Male better

I'm beginning to think there may be batch variations, as there are quite a few people complaining about longevity and others claiming it lasts forever. I really want it to be my signature scent but it just doesn't last. Maybe it's not suited for cold weather? It's freezing here in London. I'm grudgingly switching to New Haarlem as my signature scent for the winter.

Everyone likes something different I suppose...I actually enjoy it. Yes I do get the comparisons to LM but I enjoy LM too! Just a more refined and sophisticated scent, which makes it its own. From Amouage, it is safe but nothing wrong with a house producing a few safe scents here and there! lol At the end of the day no matter what people say about niche...they need to pay the bills too and Im sure RM revenues line their pockets and fills the coffers quite well.
I was born to shoot guns and smell good doin it!

It simply turned up my stomach, I had to wash it off. I tried again - the same result. Thank you, that's enough.

    This.

Plus, I assume said negative reviews contain their own reasoning, why not just read them?

Admittedly not all reviews and opinions are based purely on the smell of a given fragrance. There are other factors at work and some are compromising and problematic. There is little point trying to analyze peoples opinions though as few will openly admit, or are even aware such factors have influenced their outlook. To suggest, or insist it is the case will make you no friends. People do not like to have their opinions invalidated, and I appreciate the sentiment. It's best to take each review at face value and simply be aware of said factors when you consider the reaction to a fragrance in a universal sense.

The urge to undermine certain reviews and opinions when it comes to some fragrances is equally liable to be the result of influences beyond that of the fragrance itself.

In these circumstances I think it's key to bear in mind that there is no consensus as to what makes a good fragrance. Much less in the realm of highly expensive niche stuff. Bearing in mind the above caveat I think I can clear up this cognitive dissonance, all the same. You said the Youtube reviewers claim it draws compliments and rate it positively, while BN reviewers are less enthusiastic? Here at BN the majority of niche enthusiasts are drawn to such fragrances for reasons far removed from drawing compliments. Thus they are unlikely to appreciate a very expensive fragrance whose composition seems overly mainstream, middle-of-the-road, or safe on the strength of its ability to draw compliments.

For my part I know I could buy half a dozen designer fragrances, all of them compliment magnets, for the price of Reflection Man. I don't think I'm alone in believing that very expensive niche compositions should offer more. Though I do aknowledge that there are many who feel otherwise.

It just smells nice, which doesn't allow elitist perfumistas to challenge your basic common sense with their praise of high concept/smell bad fragrance products that no one actually likes.

I concur with the comments on Reflection Man's perfomance inconsistencies in the current London weather. I'm now switching to Jubilation XXV (and that too,has its own longevity issues).Reflection Man is proving to be relatively light for this London fall weather. I can't even imagine how it would fair in the December/January chill. I guess it's best reserved for enclosed occassions, spring and summer, perhaps? New Haarlem is a good choice...

Because Amouage makes such high end quality fragrances. Reflection sticks out like a sore thumb as the "sell out" fragrance for Amouage. I personally really like it, but for what your getting it's way over priced. Jubilation XXV on the other hand is worth every penny.
    My current favorites:

Bleu De Chanel, Creed Green Irish Tweed, Zino Davidoff, Dior Homme Intense, Creed Royal Oud, M7 (all versions), Chanel Egoiste, Dior Homme Sport, and Thierry Mugler Pure Malt.

My theory is that their fragrances are made for humid middle eastern weather.

I personally went from hating it to loving it back to hating it. I am not in the camp that feels this smells like Le Male. I thought it smelled like an old man. Literally old man not something an old man would wear.

Your theory could actually be well correct.
Actually,I once found myself questioning the opinion of one Youtube reviewer who insisted fragrances from Amouage only work in (not best) cooler climes; I had to ask, what of the huge local Middle eastern customer base living and working daily in the highly humid M. E climatic conditions? Are they just a fringe market for Amouage?
At the end of the day,Reflection Man is a well blended and good quality juice, that just happens to be a "deviant" among the other heavier and more complex Amouage offerings. And for this, most fragrance "snobs" within the fragcomm do not like it...But who cares! It's your money and one's personal choice.

I'm wearing it today. While I can see the comparisons to Le Male on a tester strip, it smells comepletely different to Le Male to me on my skin.

I would guess that the age differential between here and the youtube crowd might be responsible, with Reflection Man appealing more to a younger audience.

IMO, Reflection Man is nothing special - one of my least favorite from that house. However, my wife likes it, so I wear it every now and then.

Better than Le Male, but that's not saying much...
