Thread: Just received Encre Noire . . . |
. . . and am very satisfied with this EDT version. I also own Tom Ford Grey Vetiver and appreciate such refinement. However, if you want to save some money, the Lalique version costs about one third online and delivers a very clear, crisp and natural vetiver experience.
Cheers . . . Wally

Glad you like Encre Noire. It's a good one.
I really like this one too. I reach for it often, on days when I don't know what to wear, and i haven't regretted it yet. It's classy and distinctive, and goes in all different weather here. I always pick it over my other vetiver perfumes (guerlain, terre d'hermes and topman 27)
Yeah, but I think most people here do not know how that smells like besides the fact that it's not to get anymore.
Also in Spain it is not sold anywhere anymore since last years. I saw it in 2009 there but after that nomore. I 'searched' for it during my vacation last and this year and asked for it in stores but it is not there anymore. Discontinued....

I received my .17 oz sample of Encre Noire yesterday, from fragrancex.com. It didn't smell anything like what I was expecting... seemed sort of like a woman's scent. So I looked more carefully at the bottle, and guess what? They sent me the "pour elle" woman's version. I was pretty sure I *had* ordered the men's version, and the packing slip confirmed that.
So I've emailed them, and hopefully they will make good on the order and send me the right stuff.![]()
Encore Noire by Lalique is a true gem, whereas Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford, albeit a well-constructed, sedate composition, is mediocre, at best.
Thanks for reminding me of Vetiver de Puig. I have an old splash bottle of the EDT that I've used over the years and do enjoy it as well. It's the first vetiver I bought. For me it has a barbershop feel along with more of a raw vetiver note.
Cheers . . . Wally
Enjoy!![]()

Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

I've got both EN and Sycomore and actually regard former the champion when you consider $/ml. But yeah you'll miss on some ornaments of latter no doubt.
A great vetiver!
Really nice for fall and winter nights.
I got aldehydes from EN, while GV is a simple straightforward vetiver citrus. Neither is particularly mindblowing for me.
I agree that Encre Noire is a good winter vetiver. Wearing it today and it's really nice. Think I'll save my Creed OV for warmer weather and use this one for the colder months.
Funny...I'm receiving my first bottle of this today. Blind buy. Might as well for $32. If i really hate it, i'll give it away.
The opinions and comparisons are so all over the place with this one. Wildly varying descriptions. I don't know what the hell to expect. The only one that made me worry is a blog review i read that said, "if you like bleu de Chanel you'll love encre noire"
I hate bleu.
I can't wait to get it!
Sycomore's opening is much better, but Encre Noir has a much better drydown.
Am I the only person who thinks Sycomore is a little too sweet? I never got all that much vetiver from it either. EN for me is a smoky vetiver, definitely on the wintry side. It could also work in the bone-dry heat of an indian-summer October.
Encre Noire is a great frag. Enjoy!
Although not a big fan of Encre Noir, but I should confess that it's a very respectable scent!
And i just received my Encre Noire as well.
Its absolutely nothing like i thought it would be. Everyone made it out to be this very dark and brooding type frag. I don't see it that way at all. To me its very light, almost happy. I don't quite understand the Ink note everyone talks about either.
Unfortunately, i'm really not crazy about it honestly. I was going to wear it tonight before i knew what it smelled like. But after spraying it on my skin, i'm getting that sweetness i was just complaining about with Creed Original Vetiver in the "scrubber" thread.
I've had Creed OV for a couple years now and never had a problem with it, until yesterday. So maybe theres something up with me right now. The sweetness in EN is not even close to Creed OV, but i can see it making me want to scrub if i were to spray it on in this state.
So to me, Encre Noire smells like a nice Humidor. Spanish cedar and vetiver. Thats about it.
I think i'll shelve it for now, and come back to it at a later date.
Its definitely quality juice thats for sure!
Didn't care for EN. And for the same reason I didn't like TdH. There is a similar note in the 2 that just doesn't work... don't know if it's the vetiver or ISO E Super.
I really like EN. Took me a little while to warm up to the vetiver notes. At first, I thought it was atrocious, but now I can't get enough of it.
I'll have to agree with some of the others on here, I've never understood the hype on this one. I bought it blind and have tried a few times to wear it and see where all the love is coming from... But unfortunately I still don't get it.
Maybe one day it will reveal itself to me.
I had a great day in this today. And my wife was effusive in her praise this evening. She's always liked this on me. Better keep it!
