New to the site. I'm looking for an ocean/sea scent. Everything I've tried w/ ocean /sea in the name smells "chemically". A few years ago a friend had a colonge that smelled EXACTLY like an ocean breeze. Any recommendations? Much appreciated

When I think about a sea/ocean scent, I don't actually think of aquatics. I think of Millesime Imperial. It's a great sea salt and melon scent that is just divine. One of the best hot weather fragrances in my opinion. It's a little pricy, but you can get a split of it on here for $69.

I've noticed the same thing, not that I've tried too many, especially not "sea" scents. It seems like every water/ocean/sea scent smells more like an air freshener or cleaner than anything I'd actually want to smell like. (My Ocean anyone? lol. I used to wear that one for some reason. Now I think it literally smells like bathroom cleaner.)

CB I Hate Perfume has one that's called At the Beach 1966, CB is apparently known for his realistic scents but I haven't tried it.

I would seek out the long since discontinued, but still relatively inexpensive Voyageur by Jean Patou.

    Hi!

One that I really like, that has just a hint of sea salt, and smells very much like an excellent fragrance worn by the seaside, is Sel de Vétiver, by The Different Company. Depending where you live, though, it can be hard to find.

    http://world.thedifferentcompany.com...,4,VETI531.cfm

I love Bulgari Aqua - possibly my favorite really strong oceanic scent. The marine aspect is almost identical to the smell of the ocean (I tested this out by sniffing some as we were driving to the beach in Texas.)

L'Eau par Kenzo is also a lot like a nice sea-side breeze. I have half a mind that this is what your friend had.

    PS - Welcome to Basenotes!

    Welcome to base notes!

My fave ocean scent is Creed Erolfa, has a briny component that reminds me of smelling the ocean air. And another +1 for Bulgari Aqua.

I'd highly recommend testing all of these out before committing just because even among the oceanic scents there are differences that you may or may not like.
    Summer 2013 Top 10 :

    1. Creed Aventus
    2. Dior Homme Sport (2012)
    3. L'Eau Bleue D'Issey
    4. Bleu de Chanel
    5. Acqua dio Gio Essenza
    6. Strange Invisible Perfumes - Peloponnesian
    7. Tom Ford Neroli Portofino
    8. Diesel Green Masculine
    9. Terre d'Hermes

I agree with Bvlgari Aqva Pour Homme. It is pretty much the ocean in a bottle.

+1 Milliesime Imperial - Creamy melon on a Ocean Breeze.
+1 Sel Marin - Smell this and close your eyes and imagine the beach and sea and you will be there. Amazing frag!

I find that the creamy melon note in Milliesime Imperial is very short lived. 15-30 minutes tops. Then you get a salty vibe which is not very pleasant at all. I have a new bottle of M.I. I don't get any compliments when I wear it. Maybe it's just me but I don't see the fuss over M.I.

Sorry to hear that it seems the dreaded Creed batch variations strike again. I get six hours where the creamy melon note is strong then another three where it calms down and the salt becomes more evident but not too much. Creed has got to sort this out, I believe the 2010 batches were awful.

It's the same for me, unfortunately, to the extreme. Very little melon just in the opening & then super strong salty accord that comes off very harsh to my nose. Wondering if my sample was either spoiled or from a bad batch, because it was so far from the great things I've always heard about it. Funny thing is, when I first wore my sample I got this & was ready to wash it off after a while. Then my wife came home & unprompted complimented me on my new cologne...so maybe my nose is just too sensitive to whatever it is they use as the salt accord.

That being said, IMO Bvlgari's Aqua & aqua Marine are the closest true "ocean" scents. Many also like Hugh Parsons take with their "traditional" (blue), although to me it also has a very harsh salt/chemical accord early on.

Another vote for Bvlgari Aqva. It's the only fragrance that actually smells like the ocean to me. Not the beach on a sunny day, but more of a deep ocean smell. It reminds me of being on a boat way out at sea.

I would recommend one, but every ocean scent I've tried ends up smelling harsh and terrible on my skin.
    Bvlgari Aqua is no exception.
I'll try that Kenzo one and let you know how it goes.

I would try Dune from Christian Dior. It has been discontinued but, if you search around on eBay or some of the online retailers may still have it. I'm pretty sure Amazon.com would. It smells light and a beach just before a rain as I've been told.

Maybe discontinued in Usa but certainly not here!
You can get Dune for men by Dior everywhere here and if I am not mistaken I saw it in main stores in Belgium and Germany as well! It's a pretty good original fragrance indeed!

Not been mentioned yet but Ocean Wet Wood by DSquared2..

I've got a few of the L'eau Par Kenzo variants and I'd say Ocean Wet Wood smells more "oceanic" than any of them, but it's more a damp, cold ocean smell rather than any warmth. You can almost taste the driftwood..

I'm on a similar quest, but I'm looking for an ocean/pine combination to evoke the beach at Quoddy Head, Maine. Though I haven't tried them yet, I'm curious to try layering two by CB I Hate Perfume; I think the accords are called Fir Tree and North Atlantic.

    Great thread. Lisa
