Default Chanel Egoiste vs Platinum Egoiste

For those of you who have sampled both, which do you prefer? I received a decant of the Platinum Egoiste and sampled it last night. I must say it is very very good and worth picking up for this summer. I just wanna make sure that I'm not missing out on something better in the original Egoiste. Please leave your comments, thanks!

IMO Platinum Egoiste can´t even be compared to such a great fragrance like Egoiste.
They are so different it is impossible to compare. And, again, from my experience with fragrances, Platinum Egoiste is not worth it. AT ALL.
On the other side I can definitely say that Egoiste is right up there in my top five favourites. Trully wonderful and amazing scent. Great quality. Definitely Egoiste is the on to go for.

They are totally different and are not comparable. I MUCH prefer Egoiste; especially, the concentree which is a masterpiece, but is not what I'd call a summer fragrance.

The Platinum version has a mineral note in it that stinks to me. There are many people that like it, but I am unequivocally not one of them. If you like the Platinum, then definitely go for it. It is your nose that matters, not mine.

Platinum is for the masses, Egoiste is for the specialist. I think a scent strip test, on the street, would show that. In my experience, Platinum is mostly brash and fresh. Egoiste is very suave, and I believe it's an acquired taste.

Neither of them are in my current collection, though I have owned both several times. I do have mini's of each.

Wow! Awesome responses and what a surprise. Not one vote for the Platinum lol. Looks like I'm definately gonna get a hold of a sample of Egoiste somehow and give that a run. Seems like I may be in for a pleasant surprise.

At least try 'em both - they're both good frags. Though for me Egoiste - like almost all classic male scents - smells a bit dated. Trust your nose not other people's opinions.

The vintage EDT with yellow juice smells a bit dated to me, but the latest formulation with clear juice is a modern classic and could pass for a fragrance that was released this year.

No battle here - Egoiste (original) wins big time. And like NewHaarlem said, latest formulation is modern and not dated at all. One of my all time favorite. Platinum Egoiste is ok, but there are far better fresh/summer scents here.

Unless Platinum smells better for the original poster, which in fact, would make it a better fragerance for him then the original. Worth trying both though, I find egoistes topnotes to be similiar to an olfactory nightmare. But I don't have a lot of experience with this fragerance, only tried it on once.

    +1

If you asked 10 people who are not into fragrances, I would say 8/10 would prefer Platinum Egoiste. If you asked 10 basenoters/enthusiasts what they prefer, 7/10 would prefer Egoiste.

While I acknowledge that PE is more of an easy going 'acessible' smell, I think it's a very high quality one and prefer it to the original Egoiste.

I still haven't given Egoiste a full wearing but every time I try it, I get the same thing; rubber and overly sweet dried fruits. Not really my thing.

Can anyone tell me which formulation these bottles are?

    They came from this thread:

The poster mentions Cologne Concentree as well as Vintage Egoiste. Are they the same things?

I must have used 10 or even more bottles in the past 20 years and it's still in my top 5 list of alltime fragrances. I never get bored of this fragrance: it has so much depth and yet it's so easy to wear. A true classic.
Can't say you must blindbuy it, but you will have to sniff this once in your lifetime, that's for sure.

I think that it is easy to brush of Platinum Egoiste as another fresh scent until you give it a number of wearings. I would call Platinum my signature work scent and there are so many facets to the scent as it changes throughout the day that I still don't get bored. However, it took me a little while to warm up to the scent, but now I love it. It just gives me the feeling "I will win no matter what".

I am ashamed that I still haven't tried Egoiste.

I am ordering a sample right now in fact.

I'm not as expert as others on here, but I've smelled a lot of designer and niche over the years. I would say that Egoiste is the best frag I've ever smelled and my current favorite.

Blind buy? Maybe not. Because with all the hype comes high expectations, and it's hard for any frag to live up to being considered by many as a masterpiece the way Egoiste is.

I first found the opening notes a bit harsh, but now I love it. And the drydown is the most amazing of anything I own.

Posting just to echo what others have already said: PE and Egoiste are different.

Platinum is a fresh scent; buy it if you like it. Personally, I have longevity issue with PE. With regard to Egoiste, it smells classic and I like it. Opens very strong, but the rest of the notes are superb. It lasts long and projects well. Blind-buy not suggested though.

    I own and enjoy both.

Egoiste - To many youngsters, aged 30 and below, this frag will seem dated and smell too much like old gent - citrus, rose and (too little) sandalwood. But it's a classic for sure. I sometimes get notes in the opening, that reminds me too much of Caron Le 3rd Homme. I will give Egoiste 9/10.

Platinum Egoiste - a completely different animal. A VERY stylish but still fresh & clean scent. Somehow Chanel has made a frag that actually smells like metal, fresh metal or rather fresh platinum I enjoy Platinum Egoiste more than I enjoy Egoiste at the moment. I really really like Platinum, especially the first 3-4 hours of the this frag smells amazing on me. After that it tones down a bit, smells more sandalwoody and loses the 'fresh metal' boost. I give this frag 9.5/10

Along with YSL Body Kouros and YSL Kouros, Chanel Platinum could be my signature scent. I enjoy it VERY much.

I just received my 50ml bottle of Chanel Egoiste yesterday. This was a blind buy based solely on basenote reviews.

With the first spray to my wrist I thought "damn, basenoters you've set me up!" It smelt way too strong and I didn't like it at all. After about 30 mins - 1 hour I smelt my wrist again and WOW has this scent changed. It turns much lighter and smells amazing! I couldn't stop smelling my wrist.

After a while though I started to feel sick and my head was spinning. I am not sure if this was due to the perfume or whether this was because of something else. Has anyone else had this effect when smelling Egoiste? I will have to give it a few days before I have a final view on Chanel Egoiste, I have not decided if I love it or hate it yet. My mum loved it though!

Dont smell your wrist like that!

Scents are diff when you smell "the aroma" wafting to your nose from your chest, neck etc where you get the essence of the scent in a controlled manner....vs getting right up to your nose w wrist and getting a mega-blast of it. This happens w/ egoiste, absolue pour le soir, etc.

Its like in chemistry class you dont take the chemical right up to your nose -- it will burn your nostrils!

wow I never thought of it like that. I think with Chanel Egoiste I will have to stop smelling my wrist when I put it on then, it smells good but its very strong. I only sprayed it once on my wrist but it was like an explosion and I could smell it everywhere. It might take some getting used to I think.

    thanks for the advise though!

    Interesting perspective -

I haven't sampled Egoiste in a few years (and it was a Vintage bottle) - it was very good, but I didn't buy it. Expensive!

I was able to find Egoiste Platinum (Vintage)...so I wrote it as it is printed on the bottle, with EGOISTE on top of PLATINUM. I last tried this in Vintage form as well but stayed away after knowing it was reformulated.

I have to say that I am very happy to get a perfect bottle of Chanel Egoiste Platinum. Very wonderful fresh, refined, floral and the interesting and unique accord of fresh metal, or as you said, "fresh platinum". It is not a powerhouse and will not blow you away - but that's perfect. A scent like this is about charm, balance and synergy. I like it, a lot. A nice addition to my collection. Kudos to Jacques Polge...another feather in his cap of wonderful creations!

Patience is virtue as I last smelled this back in the mid-90's!

    Cheers,

I had actually purchased the Platinum Egoiste prior to the original. I now have the Egoiste and the Egoiste concentree. The platinum version is a fresher, summer fragrance which really has nothing in comparison to Egoiste. It was created because years ago, most American men did not appreciate the complexity of Egoiste. I do not find myself using the platinum version much. It has a gillete vibe to me. It is refreshing but not much else. I guess it's worth having in the collection though. The concentree version by far, is the preferred but it cannot be worn during the warmer months.

    Old thread, but interesting opinions.

I dismissed Platinum Egoiste as "yet another nasty aquatic" when I first smelled it, but since then I've changed my mind - as far as modern fresh fragrances go, I think it's one of the better ones (along with Bleu de Chanel - different fragrance, but aimed at the same crowd). I seriously dislike Cool Water.

But original Egoiste is taking things up several levels - for me it's one of the all-time greats, and sharing the name with the Platinum stuff is an insult to it.

I think Platinum Egoiste smells like a shopping mall. (probably becasause it has a similar vibe to A&F Fierce, which they pump out of the air vents in every mall in America) That's fine if you like shopping malls, but for me, no thanks.

I find Egoiste sickeningly cinnamon sweet to the point of revulsion. It's like 1 million for middle-aged men.

    So, neither.

Interesting perspectives put forth. While I contemplate adding Egoiste to my fall/winter/early spring line-up, getting the Vintage bottle of Egoiste Platinum is satisfying to me. A 100ml bottle of this for a very fair price and one that is wearable for spring/summer/early fall in Northern CA. I find the longevity to be very good, with a wonderful freshness that doesn't leave the entire wearing...the metallic note drifts in but is light to me and fades out in the dry down to nothing more than an overtone.

Unique and pleasant. I enjoy the note separation and balance - making it enjoyable to pull out the very good ingredients in Vintage formulation. However, it is the sum of the parts that make the whole very good.

I do have to agree - Egoiste Platinum makes no sense as they are entirely different compositions. Chanel could have done a better job with branding on this.

    Cheers,

I've tried the latest reformulated version of "Platinum Egoiste" and found it just OK. Your post made me very curious to try the vintage "Egoiste Platinum." So, I just placed an order for a mini bottle that I found on eBay. For anyone interested: http://www.ebay.com/itm/260978161211

I'll reply back when I've received and given it a full wearing.

    Thanks
I tried the original back in the '90s based on a review on thecologneguy.com. I was in search of "the best cologne", so I picked Egoiste Platinum based on it's five star review.

It had a fantastic crisp punch, and was unlike anything I had tried before.

I was in Dillards earlier this year and tried it again. This time it was weak, insipid and very ho hum. I'm going to try eBay mini and see if it has the magic.

I'm one of the rare breeds that prefers platinum. While Egoiste is definitely a classic and great, I just find platinum more versatile, wearable and suited to my tastes.

Egoiste is great and quite unique. EP is good amongst simulars.
