I used to own both and all I can say is this:

    Acqua di Gio
    >>> L'Eau D'Issey

I'm trying to find/sample ADG Essenza (EDP)... I've read somewhere that it smells like the original formulation of ADG.

You can ask this question and substitue any cologne you want and the answer will still be the same: Acqua Di Gio. Very few men's fragrances rival ADG in terms of female compliments in my experience. Maybe Curve or Fierce rivals it. As for L'Eau D'Issey, it's not even a fair fight.

Yep. As long as guys answer honestly, and stick to the "which gets more compliments from the ladies" question rather than what they (the guy) like better,....then this should be a TKO and we can end this one early. Because the answer is Acqua di Gio, without a doubt!

ADG gets more compliments and I think it smells better. I haven't yet met an Issey Miyake fragrance that was bottle worthy, though many are pleasant.

I prefer the smell of Issey, but Gio is my wife's preference between the two. She's not crazy about either. She likes powdery sweet scents the best on me.

I'd dare say both will garner plenty of compliments. Most here seem to say AdG by a stretch, however I've owned d'Issey and IIRC it was one of my biggest ever compliment-getters.

Both will get zero marks for originality though!

A lot of people are saying AdG by a mile but I wouldn't trust that. I'd say AdG is riskier but with better return, LD is safe getting the usual compliments. With AdG you might find the occasional woman in love with it or repulsed by it. Also I'd say AdG is much more popular than LD is, you might end up just smelling like someone a girl already knows.

I like both fragrances, especially the drydown on AdG. This list compiles the data in the compliments thread. LD beats out AdG by a lot.

I own both and i think ADG is far more superior to Issey Miyake any day. I have used more than half my ADG and barely a quarter of my 2.5 oz bottle of Issey Miyake. ADG got me many more compliments as well.

Even though Acqua Di Gio is the Number One bestseller, keep in mind that not everyone wears cologne so it is a rare occasion where you will smell exactly like a person's ex.

That's the thing, with ADG you are more likely to be told "you smell like my ex boyfriend" or -worse- "like my dad". Try something more adventurous.

Easily, ADG. There's a reason it's been so popular for years (it's just an almost perfect scent). As far as Issey, it's ok, but I prefer the new L'eau D'Issey Pour Homme Sport over the original (it's my favorite from the Issey lineup). Also, if you like ADG but wanna be a bit different, Perry Ellis 360 Red & Paris Hilton's Just Me are great cheap takeoffs of the ADG scent.

For compliments, ADG pretty much beats any fragrance out there. You've to remember that the common person does not give a damn about sillage, longevity, the transition to the drydown, a fragrance not being too linear or any of that - that's great stuff for a fraghead but it's all irrelevant when the sniffer only needs a whiff to place a preference. Thus, Acqua Di Gio (along with annoying scents like 1 Million and Le Male) is the ultimate compliment getter for the mainstream person.

That's not to say that it is a bad cologne, it is very much the complete opposite.

I've never been told I smelled like anybody else while wearing ADG...only that I smelled really good. I honestly don't smell ADG on many guys. The majority of men out there don't even wear cologne, so the chances of running into another guy wearing ADG isn't nearly as high as it's made out to be on this website. And remember, the OP is asking to choose between these frags based on female compliment factor, not adventurousness.

  26. #26

Default Re: Giorgio Armani Aqua de Gio vs Issey Miyake L'eau D'issey

Acqua Di Gio. Absolutely. It's a #1 international best seller for a reason, and it's probably THE most often bought frag by women for men. So, if all you're looking for is what more women will prefer, it's AdG without a doubt. Most here on basenotes tend to seek out other choices in order to be unique, since AdG is so popular. But if you want Time-Tested, Women-Approved, the answer is AdG.

That being said, either of your choices would be excellent. AdG is more versatile. L'eau D'Issey is more unique (but not rare).

Smell them both and decide which is more YOU. That's the most important thing. Seriously. Smell them both and ask "Which is more ME?"

I'm not a fan of L'eau D'issey. It's one of my least favorite fragrances, but then again I'm just not very fond of fresh, soapy, synthetic fragrances in general, and as far as I can tell L'eau D'issey is almost the epitome of that genre.

ADG is the clear winner. It's just rather boring, overused, and overpriced considering all of the cheaper copycats out there. I find it hard to believe that out of all of the unique fragrances out there, you couldn't find something you liked more.

  28. #28

Default Re: Giorgio Armani Aqua de Gio vs Issey Miyake L'eau D'issey

Aqcua di Gio is a wonderful scent. It's something that works well at night or as an every day frag because it is inviting, but not overly in your face. I haven't smelled L'eau D'issey so I can't comment on that.

Gio has this wonderful citrusy, soft lemon opening that when put on after a nice shower leaves me feeling even cleaner and relaxed and wonderful. It dry's down into a soft body scent that doesn't lose that soft lemon but develops a slight sweetness that isn't overly cloying and remains fresh. I usually apply about 5-6 sprays, 2 on chest, each armpit, the inside of each elbow.

I first bought ADG in 2010 and loved it right then, could not stop smelling it on my wrist. Now I still like it, but don't love it, the scent doesn't seem to smell as nice on me.

I reckon from 2010 until 2012 (probably about 3 months in that time when I was without a bottle) I've only ever received 2 compliments on it. It seems to have awful longevity/projection on me so am going to replace it with either L'Eau D'Issey or ADG Essenza soon. Can't decide which one to go for right now.

lol...funny how every one's choosing AdG...it's a good cologne without a doubt (bestseller), i like it , or should i say I've liked it before? lol. Why would you want to remind females of a thousand people in their past? IMO every frag fanatic has probably owned an AdG at a point in time (at least samples of it)....L'eau D'Issey is quite popular too, no doubt!!!. But Issey seems to gather more respect in modern times than AdG.
Well.....the choice is yours........but for me, I would never like to smell like everyone. Besides longevity really counts!!!

I'm not so sure I can say ADG for sure. Issey gets me an ass load of compliments every day at work. For me ADG is the bud light of men's fragrances. I get the feeling that Georgio Armani took Issey Miyake ball and ran with it in 96. IMLD was a couple years ahead of ADG, and honestly, The two compositions of one another are in the same ballpark. ADG has Issey's skeleton built around it, even down to the frosted glass (things that make you go hmmmmm).
Anyway, IMLD is more mysterious and wild. ADG will always be the wanna be little brother in my eyes.
