Now's the perfect time to get John Varvatos John Varvatos. It's the original one, and I think it's his best. Age group for this I would say is 18 and up. It's a great winter fragrance that I wore and really loved a lot when I first got into fragrances. Leather, Fig, and a bunch of other unusual notes. It really needs to be smelled to be understood. It's an awesome night out or date fragrance too.

John Varvatos vintage is solid, but I'd say it's for a bit of an older crowd (smells like 45 and up to me).

You may want to check out The Rock if you're into Rose notes, or coffee.

The Artisan fragrances are good for the summer. Black is better than the regular (which is fairly weak).

His only really bad fragrance is Varvatos Star USA--and it's mostly bad because it just has no character or personality at all to it. Smells like anything else. It was a disappointment from Varvatos.

    Go for the original

Also a fan. I actually prefer Vintage over the original. On me, they smell similar, but Vintage is a little stronger. I agree that when I smell Vintage, I think of someone in their 40s...but a classy guy, so I enjoy wearing it (I'm 34). Artisan is nice but weak, whereas Black lasts nicely for me. Haven't tried the 10th Anniversary yet, and I didn't care for Star USA.

For me: Vintage, Artisan Black, original

I like the clothing too... I really do not like the scents, however. Don't worry about age appropriateness with any scents, Varvatos included.

Agree with whitelight. Sample each if you can. Sampling is very important when first starting out is what I was told. It gives you a chance to form opinions on what you like and don't and hones your nose to different notes.
    I'm not OLD...I'm VINTAGE!

I bought the coffret of varvatos. I like all of them.

Jv original is the best, most versatile. Dates and other interesting notes make it different from most designer frags.

    Artisan my wife likes best.

Artisan black is good for night and has an anisic quality with leather.

Vintage is warm and boozy, a good cool weather frag.

John Varvatos original is amazing, nice rice fig and leather notes. It is a bit spotty with longevity and sillage and it is quite synthetic at times, but still a great scent.

Congrats on getting the coffret and welcome to basenotes I too am a big fan of the JV line and echo the others that say Star USA was a disappointment. Which one are you liking the best so far? I like the original the best, then Artisan and Artisan black and Vintage are not far behind.

Obsession is a great frag as well, and if you are liking these kinds of frags now you are prolly well past the typical guy your age who is into Ed Hardy and the like. It will be interesting to see where your nose takes you down the road
