Default Guerlain - Les Deserts d'Orient

I tried the new Guerlain - Les Deserts d'Oriente collection today.

    -Encens Mythique d’Orient
    -Rose Nacrée du Désert
    -Songe d’un Bois d’éte

As I said before, I knew it was a matter of time before Guerlain released a UAE exclusive series that consisted of : rose, oud. (leather'ish) and incense.

I absolutely loved the rose and oud ones. The former lush and the latter very authentic oud.

I didn't really like the incense because it's the sweetish-syrupy type incense. But I can see the appeal.

More importantly, here are the pics:

Arabic script on bottles. They selected a very regal calligraphy.

Thanks for the heads up. Good to hear that Guerlain is doing something good. After being forced by IFRA and Monsieur Arnault's lack of interest to debase many of its past masterpieces, it evidently had to do something to avoid sale drops in the discerning Arabian market. Presumably, there are already many local brands that do excellent rose and oud in oil, so it feels a little redundant for the Gulf, but we can always get a good rose oud here in the West. Plus, the oud is likely most a reconstruction, so there's no risk of IFRA banning yet another natural (which they would have done, had real oud been used in western perfumes).

Thank you so much for the info and photos, hedonist222! I wish I was there to smell these - the presentation is just beautiful. Do you know if the rose/oud is like something from the By Kilian line, or is it an even more natural oud with higher quality that has been used?

Primrose, Apparently they're only limited to UAE for now and then probably Qatar and Kuwait later on.

    D4niel,
They cost $300 for 75 ml.

The rose didn't have much oud (if any) in it.

The oud is a less prominent type. Very subdued. Like in Mona do Orio's Oud.

    There is no rose-oud.

    Perfume 1 - rose
    Perfume 2 oud and woody
    Perfume 3 incense

A friend of mine was wondering if these are entirely new, unique compositions - or perhaps existing fragrances from, say, the L'Arte et la Matiere line, only re-named for a different market? Perhaps Rose Barbare (rose), Bois d'Armenie (incense), etc.?

    Completely new.

-Encens Mythique d’Orient is very different than Bois d'Armenie.
-Rose Nacrée du Désert doesn't smell like Rose Barbare.

The oud wasnt floral but the oud type was very similar to Mona di Orio's Oud.

It was dry but not leathery if your reference for leather is Cuir de Ruse or Knize Ten.

I'd intended on trying it yesterday but the mall we went to didn't have it yet.

Will be trying these this week.

I prefer to dedicate a full wearing for each perfume. So there will have to be 3 individual days of testing.

I'll start with the Oud (woody) then the rose then the incense.

Yes, except for Djedi, Guerlain isn't known for really smoky leather scents.

Three-in-one is a bit much to digest at once! And adding to the confusion, I get a bit different descriptions of the three from the net than yours...? What I seems to read is:

    1. Incense (sweet-bright) - incense with aldehydes, musk, rose, moss.
    2. Floral (creamy-dark) - rose with agarwood, benzoin, patchouli.
    3. Leather (dry-spicy) - jasmine and dry woody notes of cedar, myrrh, patchouli, leather note.

Well, one mustn't believe everything one reads. However they are, one gets the impression that Thierry Wasser has been given permission to push the Arabian Nights to the max!

Just sprayed on -Songe d’un Bois d’éte.

Opens with an apparent oud - saffron - cardamom accord.

The oud weighs 65%, saffron 25% and the cardamom 10%.

The oud is very similar to the oud in Leather Oud by Dior.

If you were able to detract the oud from the leather in Leather Oud then you are completely aware the oud type used in the Guerlain. Very authentic and high quality.

They have captured the smell of oud wood burning not oud oil.

    Perfect opening.

This is Guerlain but at the same time it's not Guerlain.

Approx 3 hours into it now

The saffron and cardamom have subsided.

Now it's an interplay of oud - cedar - myrrhe - ISO E Super

    40% oud
    30% myrrhe
    20% cedar
    5% ISO E Super
    5% other

I can say that if you were fond of Leather Oud and Oud by Mona di Orio then this one will very much appeal to you.

I stopped by our local Paris Gallery last night to find out what I could about these.

The sales staff already knew about them. Their management had briefed them on the three fragrances and said that they would probably be available in about a month. They also confirmed that the price would be over 1000 SAR (>$270).

It's good news that we'll be getting these in Saudi Arabia soon. Unfortunately I'll be going to the U.S. for a vacation about then, so I won't be able to check them out until mid to late July.

Looking forward to hearing more about them!
