Default Is the average fragrance customer more sophisticated?

I've found that even celebrity scents smell better than they did in the past. It seems that the average buyer is making fragrance houses step their game up. What do you think?

I think the contrariwise, anything now smells the same, fruity floral for women and aquatic for men. Blah

I think it seems to straddle both extremes.

My initial reaction is to say no. Most fragrance consumers are not more sophisticated than they were before. Probably hardcore enthusiasts/hobbyists/etc. are, however, because of sites like this and the explosion of (quality) fragrance books marketed to the general public, etc. I'm also inclined to agree with the first respondent--that most fragrances smell too similar today, with fruity florals and ethyl maltol creations on one hand and aquatics, "sports" and wood scents on the other.

Then again, there are some good celebrity scents out (there probably always were some), and there are more niche firms enriching the variey of what's out there. And I'd like to think that fragrance companies are to some extent keeping an eye on feedback from the public.

But taken as a whole, I would say, at least from experiences with people I've talked to, that a good amount of people buying perfume are terribly unsophisticated about it.

'No' to the thread central question. But I feel it's the companies creating synthetic aromachemicals that have upped their game.

The average customer will still probably follow most ongoing hypes. Yet, on the other hand, it is not unlikely either to find among average customers well-informed, well-read, even creative and complex people when it comes to fragrances.

So, I guess, it's largely an "even mix" of both of the aforementioned.
