Default What fragrance MUST I smell to make my small collection better?

    Hello all,

I know the premise of this thread is going to annoy many of you, but here goes...

I don't want a massive collection. Can neither afford nor justify having 10+ bottles (although I have been spending an alarming amount of time sampling fragrances in the last 4 months). Neither can I pay Creed prices so I'm limited to reasonably priced designer houses.

I feel I've got a collection I can now be pleased with and stop buying for(ever?)...a while

Can I ask you guys to check this list, kind of get a feel for what I like and tell me is there another fragrance that I absolutely must sample? Just a bit of fun, but ideas would be most welcome. I would not have discovered most of this 8 if it weren't for this forum, so thanks already (though no thanks to you lot my bank balance has taken a dent)

Spring - Tom Ford Grey Vetiver, Kenzo Pour Homme
Summer - Eau Sauvage, Eau D'Orange Verte, Dior Homme Sport
Autumn/Winter - L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme, Dior Homme Intense, CdG 2 Man

So, your mission - should you choose to accept it - name me one more fragrance to improve on this lot.

    Thanks in advance.

You do have a pretty darn good collection there, a lot of similarities to fragrances I've owned. What about Terre d'Hermes (Parfum or EDT, try to sample both) by Hermes? That's one of those great all-season scents that stands out regardless of the time of year.

I think you need a good powerhouse fragrance like Giorgio for Men in your collection before calling it a day.
    Current Top Favorites:
    1) Portrait of a Lady (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4) Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    6) Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)

For stuff within a reasonable price range:

    1) a Lush. Breath of God for a striking, an avant-garde smoky vetiver, or Dirty, fresh minty. (I also like a lot B scent, floral, but I don't think it is sold in stores)
    2) Estee Lauder/Aramis also have a very good quality price ratio, at least here in the States. Ideas could be Aramis 900 (resins patch), Azuree (citrus leather), Private collection (green).

There are a few that aren't niche and don't cost a fortune:

    Givenchy Gentlemen
    YSL Rive Gauche PH
    Jacques Fath by Jacques Fath
    Caron Pour Homme
Habit Rouge by Guerlain-a little niche, but not expensive on Amazon

Terre d'Hermes is missing from your list

    and...

Chanel Antaeus - would fit nicely in your collection, as a very classy powerhouse!

Don't see anything from the Chanel or YSL houses...if you haven't already, explore them. Both produce some pretty solid frags. I'm also in the Mont Blanc camp (Legend and Individuel). You've got a decent group though.

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
A few shouts for Terre D'Hermes - I really like it, almost bought it, but find it a little strong and linear. Might still buy it though as the longevity on my skin is incredible.
I've sampled Mont Blanc Legend and though it was very fresh and tasteful. Lovely scent.
I've owned Chanel Allure and Bleu and not overly crazy about either.
Not a fan of Narciso Rodriguez fh at all, too granite grey and lavender - not for me.
Prada Amber nice, but just too soapy for me.

Good solid mini-collection, safe, polite, good taste. I think you might enjoy adding one or two really good ones with a bit more edge. It doesn't have to be all that expensive - you could go for something smoky and earthy like Encre Noire or "dirty" classics like Mouchoir de Monsieur or Eau d'Hermès... they're all affordable, very classy and really good. Any one of them would give your collection that extra little edge.

Try the Prada Amber Pour Homme Intense. Not nearly as soapy. Another vote for TdH but I suggest the edt version. Good in all seasons. The more you wear it the more you get from it. Want cheap? I still like Dirty English and Rochas Man. Kenzo Power is good too but a little floral and sweet. Try Bvlgari Aqua and Aqua Marine for warmer months. I am in the minority it seems prefering the Marine version. Perhaps a bit more money but try Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Santal Noble; I am wearing this a lot lately. Caron Yatagan is worth a try too.

I think Terre D'Hermes and Egoiste are good recommendations.

Fahrenheit might also bring an interesting dimension to your wardrobe.

And if you're looking for something subdued and versatile (as far as seasons and occasions), maybe Gucci Pour Homme 2.

I agree with the need for a powerhouse in there. Azzaro PH is the classic aromatic fougere and can be had for around $20 at American discounters (not sure about availability in the UK.) Masculine, but not too far out in left field. IMO, you could do far far worse in that genre.

OP, if you can, spend some time with Amouage line & with the Comme des Garcons line. Smell as many of 'em as you can, always quality and interesting at the least.

That's a good collection for being so "small"

I'd say check out the Chanel house. You'd most definitely like Chanel Egoiste and Antaeus. I have no doubt in my mind

Also, Midnight in Paris--very inexpensive frag that can be easily found on the internet. If you like Dior Homme or Dior Homme Intense, then you'll love this fragrance.

Vintage Zino Davidoff if you were to add a powerhouse.
I say this only because I have been on a Zino kick lately.
    Can be found for $20-$30.

Just for the sake of variety, I luv Dior Homme and DHI, but don't really like MiP.

When exploring Chanel, please ignore recent blahs like the Allure and Bleu lines. These have little relation to what built Chanel's reputation for masterful fragrances. Instead, investigate Egoïste (original, not Platinum), Antaeus, and a few from the Exclusifs if you can find them -- Sycomore, Coromandel, and Cuir de Russie being the places to start there. Fantastic stuff. Egoïste alone should be a priority.

I think you should test the following fragrances at least once, and then accomplish your collection based on your own experience with these MAINSTREAM scents:
    TDH
    Givenchy Xeryus Rouge
    YSL L'Homme & La Nuit
    D&G PH
    Dior Fahrenheit
    YSL Body Kouros
    Gucci PH
    Bvlgari Aqua PH
    Azzaro PH
    Rochas Man

If you are not collecting bottles , try a decant of GIT or Aventus (50 ml) - you'll be paying only designer prices. Both these are excellent and can be used for special occasions too..

How about Mitsouko? It is both an artistically and historically significant fragrance, and you can buy a 2.5 oz. edp on Amazon for around 50 bucks.

Funny that I thought I could just ditch my new hobby and stop adding to my small collection. Anyway, after reading all your responses and sampling what I could, I made the (safe?) choice of Mont Blanc Legend. It smells fruity, but not overly sharp and really cool and clean (probably stood out because it is in such contrast to the warm, woody winter scents I've been wearing eg. CdG 2 Man and DHI). Also, a girl I am friends with said she loved it and wanted to keep smelling the wrist I had tested it on. I honestly wear fragrances just for me (my love of Kenzo Pour Homme will attest to that - not one compliment yet!) but it is undeniably nice when your tastes chime in with the ladies.

    Thanks everyone...(now...what to add next?)
