Default Was this a good gift purchase for a father-in-law?

Today I bought a fragrance as a Christmas gift for my mother's new man. She's been seeing him for about a year and seems blissfully happy, but I've never actually met him before, and this is the first Christmas we (those two, his son and daughter and me and my brothers) will spend Christmas together. I know, it's a risky choice of gift! I'll get him a book related to one of his interests as well, just to be safe.

This guy is about 55 years old, quite an old-fashioned kind of chap, and by the sounds of things rather civilized and intellectual. He likes Jazz and Classical music, thoroughly enjoys travel (mainly to places like the Middle East, Africa and India), and he's into trains, old books, whisky, cigars, and old-fashioned ale. Frankly, he sounds ace.

Anyway, he's getting Chergui by Serge Lutens.

Did I do good? Or have I made a terrible mistake?

Personally I LOVE the stuff. If he hates it I'd happily take it off his hands!

My father-in-law is getting Halston Z-14 aftershave. He's not an edt type of guy, he likes splash after shaves which are getting really hard to find.

Not really on point, fragrance wise, but wouldn't he be your step-father, not father in law? Unless you married his daughter, then he'd be both.

Oh yes, you're right, he'd be my Step Father rather than my Father-in-Law! Thanks for mentioning. Guess I was on auto-pilot writing that, didn't think. Then again, do they maybe need to be married for even that to be correct? I shall check.

If you mom likes it on him, then yeah, you did good! If he doesn't enjoy it, well, wasn't that what you were (secretly) hoping for??

Well, in the end I consulted my Mother on this, and she completely banned me from giving it to him! Not because there's a problem with the fragrance, she doesn't know it and I think she would probably love it, but because she didn't want me to give him a £66 ($105) gift. She thinks it's too much, and the books I bought him as well are more than enough.

Well, if you say so Mother! This is getting added to my own fragrance wardrobe, along with the bottle of L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme Extreme that Santa left under the Christmas tree for me (I already have a full bottle of that at home, but you can never have too much of a juice that good!).

I think Chergui is unbearable, so good call on not giving him an expensive gift he may not like

I think YSL Koyros is the best choice for your father in law and my father in law is also using it.

If you like it, great....it worked out for the best! Had you solicited advice beforehand, though, Chergui would have probably been one of my last recommendations for gifting a middle-aged man. It's pretty heavy stuff for someone who (presumably) isn't into fragrance too deeply.
