Question CHANEL: Vintage Antaeus 'After Shave'

I know there have been a number of "Vintage Antaeus" threads, but I havent found any that specifically refer to the Vintage AFTER SHAVE.

I have found with some 80s powerhouse fragrances, that the "then" aftershaves are often comparable in terms of strength to the "now" EDTs.

Has anyone tried vintage Antaeus After Shave, and if so, can you kindly comment.

    Thanks very much

I have both vintage edt and aftershave. The aftershave may smell a little less rich than the edt, but it is potent and has great longevity!

Thats great news, thank you Tott.
I am thinking of buying the vintage A/S to appease myself until a bottle of EDT appears out of nowhere one day.

I just wanted some feedback as to how it lasts etc.

I never know that an after shave can last more than some minutes!!

Only Antaeus AS can last? Or the powerhouses too?

Like easyfish pointed out, vintage lasts well.

Generally speaking, vintage fragrances are more potent and have better longevity compared to modern ones. Sometimes the differences are remarkable. I'm not exactly sure why. Formulations may have been thinned out, especially the basenotes. Some ingredients (natural and synthetic) may have had to be replaced due to legislation or public opinion, and some of those may have been more powerful fixatives and projected better compared to what we have today. It's probably a combination.

It feels like we've seen countless reformulations the past couple of years which have produced quiet, watered down versions of old favourites.

    I agree.

I found the aftershave of DERBY to be very nice and long-lasting. Of course the EDT is preferred, but vintage Derby being the powerhouse that it was, I find its longevity on par with many modern EDTs (5 hours or so).

Antaeus is another Im excited to try. I think Tott youve talked me into it.

My vintage Antaeus aftershave lasts longer than most of my current EDTs....

I wanted to go on record and say that the vintage aftershave has exceptionally good persistence.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase

If u can buy the vintage, go on !
Last month, I bought in a shop the EDT....what a mistake, is just a shadow from the original... Don t know about the after shave, but think it s better that you buy a decent facemoisturer...

Since I started this thread, I purchased the vintage aftershave to decant into an atomiser and apply as I would an eau de toilette. I never splash my face with aftershaves, if it can be avoided... moisturisers are preferred.

I was very pleased with my vintage A/S purchase, so much so that I have returned to my supplier and am buying another (the last in his inventory). 50ml at $29 each: I really cant lose.

And how can one tell that this is vintage? Color of the box? Date on the box? Bottle different?

The boxes are different. Here is a photo of a new box:

    http://www.shopmania.ro/magazin~onli...p-8647903.html

On the newer boxes the After Shave description is at the bottom, in small letters. On the vintage boxes the After Shave description is more in the middle, just above Chanel. This holds true for all the vintage Antaeus products.

I like to think of the new boxes as highlighting the product name and the Chanel name. The vintage boxes emphasized the type of product (edt, after shave, etc.).

I believe this method can be used to identify older bottles of Pour Monsieur as well.

    Correct.

Vintage Chanel Boxes: Concentration printed ABOVE Chanel logo
Newer Boxes: Concentration printed BELOW Chanel logo.

Yes, Chanel has always been very consistent in their packaging, which is a blessing when trying to figure out these things...!

Thanks for the clarification - gosh, that's easy to see which one is vintage and which one isn't (unless, of course, the seller switches boxes).

You bet. Some ebay sellers will fill old 4ml and 19ml bottles with newer juice. Since they are splash versions, what's to stop a dishonorable seller from doing this?

I usually look for the Sport version since there's only one version ( vintage) and it smells as good as the regular vintage rendition. I have no idea why it's called "Sport" since it's anything but a weaker version of original Antaeus.

Fortunately the standard vintage EDT comes in full size spray bottles also, which are laid out typographically in the same manner as the vintage boxes. These are obviously impossible to refill with modern juice.

Unless you are ebuying from a reputable seller (as in my case), I would avoid Antaeus screw-top purchases.

I love seeing those vintage bottles ! I agree with you that, unless you have a proven vintage seller, it's best to forgo splash renditions and stick with the 50 or 100ml bottles regardless of formulation.

What's weird is that when I do decide to look for a vintage rendition of Antaeus, I always seem to find the Sport version. This happened again a few days ago, but one of these times, I'm going to run into a bottle of vintage EDT so I have both at the same time.

One of the first aftershaves I used in the 80's and it was smooth!
    And the scent lasted forever...
They don't make 'em like this anymore: a shame!

gratz on your purchase, d4N13L! Let us know wether you liked it!
I'm a bit jealous I have to admit.
Antaeus was my first love and I'm very unhappy with the reformulation.
Doesn't do the magic for me anymore like it did back then.
    Enjoy and be bold!

How can you compare the vintage After Shave with current EDT?
    Richness, Lasting and Sillage

I received my vintage after shave about 15 days ago. I gave it a full wear and, GOD, its fabulous. Its strong than most of 90% of my EDTs.
I think if someone put is splashed in the face, will be overwelmed for the potency close to the nose.
Lasted all day with a good sillage. Also is as much rich as the EDT.

The 80s will not back anymore =(

Here a pick with a Egoiste vintage too. (50ml both)

That was a hard decision to open a sealed botte for that long time.

Drool! Glad to hear it's as good as I remembered it was. Enjoy m8!
I'm sampling the new Antaeus EdT atm and I can live with the reformulation.
Will buy a 100ml later this year. A bit lighter, but that's ok these days.
You go boom with your vintage bottles. Way cool!
Show "the unwashed" how it was done back then, haha!
