Default Sniff 'n' Speak Saturday, January 5, 2013 *** ORIENTALS

For newcomers, here's the lowdown on this monthly online event:
Every member, any gender, novice or veteran sniffer, is invited to apply a fragrance related to the theme of the month (listed below) and share your thoughts on the first Saturday of the month. This isn't a mandatory assignment; it's just for fun. Because not everyone logs in on weekends, you're encouraged to continue to add comments within this themed thread on subsequent days. If you don't join us for this month's discussion, please look ahead at the tentative lineup and join in at a later date.
    JANUARY ~ Oriental
(warmth, flowers, spices, woods & vanilla)
    FEBRUARY ~ Animalic
(civet-, castoreum-, leather-, or musk-influenced scents)

    MARCH ~ Chypre
(used to be defined by oakmoss presence, but ...?)
    APRIL ~ Floral
(single solifore or full bouquet of flowers)
    MAY~ Fruity
(single sweet fruits or a bowl of fruity-florals)
    JUNE ~ Citrus
(hesperidic: bergamot, lemon, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, etc.)
    JULY ~ Green
    (fresh leaves & grasses)
    AUGUST ~ Fresh or aquatic
(cool, dewy notes and seaside scents)
    SEPTEMBER ~ Opposite-Gender Fragrance
    OCTOBER ~ Ambery
(dark, light or blond amber as feature note)
    NOVEMBER ~ Spicy
    (warm notes associated with cooking)
    DECEMBER ~ Gourmand
(fragrances with a foody note, but not usually fruity--save for May)

Hi all, l'm wearing L'Instant de Guerlain, a lovely soft, floral oriental with magnolia & amber notes. l'm working today, & this is one that l find suitable for that environment; it has a nice warm "presence" without being too heavy.

    Have a fragrant day, everyone!

Hello! Joining the oriental SnS with great pleasure, in Creed's glorious Angelique Encens. If Shalimar is all about promises of carnal pleasures and earthly delights, AE speaks of the divine - otherworldly, serene, ethereal. Yet it has a dark, animalic undertone too, subtle though it may be, it's still there.

Notes include angelica, tuberose, incense, vanilla, ambergris

    I'm my favourite Oriental...lol

Seriously, my all time favourite oriental is Opium. She and I have been in a relationship since 1980.

My latest discovery is Black Peony by Parfum Satori (http://parfum-satori.com/jp/topics/2...eony.html#more). It is a more subtle oriental with notes of bergamot, mandarin, orange flower, violet, geranium, sandalwood, musk, patchouli, amber, moss and vanilla. Very zen

Glad I read your post before applying the oriental-vanilla Cadjmere 18 that came to mind. Now I'm going to go with Opium. Back later to comment.

Opium -- I cannot believe I like you. Carnation’s spiciness usually overwhelms me, but the weight of the base notes (myrrh, opoponax, vanilla, patchouli, amber) turns Opium into a cloud of mellow. Mellow goooood.

Quarry, I'm glad you're enjoying it! It is very good indeed. Have you tried the vintage parfum version?

That's likely what I tested at Chris Tsefalas’s Portland Perfume Shop (known for carrying only the good stuff, imported from Europe) last spring. It was the standout of the myriad dabs I'd taken on that day. The edt I bought from The Perfumed Court since then does well enough to remind me of the scent. Of course, you're correct in assuming that vintage parfum is virtually always better than any other variations.

I'm a big fan of orientals! I had a list of several potentials for today, but in the end I chose Paul & Joe Bleu.

Bleu is a warm, fuzzy, cozy oriental in the classical sense of the genre. It reminds me a bit of Shalimar ... tone down the vanilla, and amp up the amber; take away a bit of the smokiness and add an extra helping of powder and you have Bleu.

Notes include bergamot, coriander, caraway, cardamom, cumin, ylang-ylang, jasmine, rose, magnolia, heliotrope, sandalwood, oud, patchouli, myrrh, vanilla, and musk.
    I've trademarked the color bleu

I'm late to the party. Can I still join in?

As I went sniffing yesterday, I wore no perfume on skin.

Today, I'm wearing Chopard Casmir. I get a load of vanilla, but completely inedible to me. Stays in oriental family in my opinion. I haven't experienced anything else quite like it before.

Oh, yes, please, please play along.
Some of us have been here so long, we've grown roots.
New posters are very much welcome.
Casmir is amazing stuff, as evidenced by its continued popularity.

Been away with Mr Ali who celebrates 52 years on this earth today so missed yesterday. I did stay in orientals and on my wearing only samples I already have and haven't already tried or my own FBs.

So yesterday started with By Kilian In The City of Sin which felt like the Emperor's New Clothes it was so light. In the evening I moved onto Amouage Opus III definitely oriental but something unbalanced in the mid. Thankfully no FB lemming there.

Today was Good Girl Gone Bad who's dry down is pure Palma Violets.. Ugh! Not for me and not in the least naughty

I didn't have access to a computer, but, this being my first oriental sat, last weekend I went back to classics and wore Shalimar vintage edt. Gorgeous, smoother and more gourmand than recent versions, and a proper wearing throughout the day with a couple of restaurants confirms Turin's statement that Shalimar is always in perfect accord with the food being served.
