    Default Perfume "Houses"?

I'm sure this has been answered before but I'm curious why perfume manufacturers are sometimes referred to as "Houses". I'm looking for a little historical background I guess. Thanks for any replies.

That's an interesting question. Never thought about that before. Would love to know also.

I suppose that it reflects the use of the same word for fashion houses (Maison Dior, Maison so and so), which soon started producing perfumes. Whether it was applied to other types of merchants, I don't know, but I suspect it did. And it might simply derive from the fact that merchants would produce and sell their wares in their actual house. But this is just a guess

Edit: a quick google search seems to indicate that the word maison in French has for some time had the figurative meaning of "family" and "business" (given that in the past businesses were family affairs passed down from one generation to the other). So I guess maison -> family -> business
