Default Wich Serge Lutens should I buy next for my collection?

    Dear BN's,

As your advice is always very much appreciated I'd like to ask your idea for a new Serge Lutens purchase.

    I now own the following:
    - Ambre Sultan *****
    - Arabie ****
    - Chergui ****
    - Jeu de Paux ***(*)

I like the house a lot but they are not always that versatile that's why I find it difficult to give them a 5 star rating...

I sampled Daim Blond, L'eau and L'eau froide also but I didn't like them. Especially not the last two!

What suggestions can you make for other SL sampling/purchases?

    Thank you!

    TLS

You should give the following a try
    Borneo 1834
    Cedre
    Chene
    Cuir Mauresque
    Fille en Aiguilles
    Five O`Clock Au Gingembre
    Santal Majuscule

IMO, if you can appreciate Ambre Sultan & Arabie then you can appreciate pretty much any Serge Lutens offerings

A great dry, camphorous, earthy patchouli scent.

There is a great variety in this house as you know, so if you can get to a retail outlet and sample - there is much to discover. However, along with Ambre Sultan, Arabie and Chergui that you have, the following are what I think of as the classics from SL.

    Muscs Koublai Khan
    Fille en Aiguilles
    Fumerie Turque
    Borneo 1834
    Un Bois Vanilla

It's a great house, and I hope you enjoy your discoveries

You seem to prefer denser, more ambery ones (which is indeed the style of the house). The eaus are definitely unusual for Lutens. So as others have said already, Borneo 1834 (patch chocolate), Feminte de bois (woods and candied fruits), Bois vanille (woody gourmand), and especially the daring Muscs Koublai Khan (musk). In the exclusifs, stuff like Fumerie turque, El Attarine, Une voix noire.

These are some of my favorites:

Bois de Violette hands down, the best of the Féminité du Bois spawn; better than the original IMO
Borneo 1834 one of the most compelling treatments of patchouli I have ever experienced
    Cuir Mauresque perfect leather oriental
Féminité du Bois the fragrance that started it all; the blueprint for the Lutens style
    Fumerie Turque leathery tobacco
Iris Silver Mist there are two type of orris-based fragrances: Iris Silver Mist and everything else
    La Myrrhe beautiful modern aldehydic
Muscs Koublaï Khän insanely animalic musk
Sarrasins best jasmine I have ever tried

    I'll just add to what others have said and likewise recommend;

    Muscs Koublai Khan
    Borneo 1834
    Fille en Aiguilles
    Chene

I'd also suggest one that hasn't been mentioned yet, and that one is Gris Clair .

It's not the type of heavy, syrupy oriental that Lutens is usually known for, but it's a fantastic incensey lavender (though in reverse order). If you're looking for versatility, give this one a shot, as it's got a totally different feel from his usual offerings (without straying into the bland areas that the L'Eau fragrances went into).

It's difficult to say if any of the SL's are "versatile", but they sure are wonderful things.

I could vote for all the ones mentioned above, but just for the heck of it I'll say :

    Fille en Aiguilles

Thank's for all the wonderfull replies, BN's. I enjoyed reading all the replies!

There are a lot but they are not versatile at all, which make them a favorite of the very conoisseurs.

I would recommend you a lot like: Cuir Mauresque, Serge Noire, Gris Clair and the others, but if I would be forced to recommend just one it would be:

    Fille en Aiguilles

I'd recommend Cuir Mauresque, Santal de Mysore, Borneo 1834.

I own Santal Majuscule and like it alot but since you already own Jeux de Peau (and didn't rank it as high as other SLs), you might not wish to own that one due to similarities. I enjoy Chene but I find that it doesn't transform as much as other SLs... its pretty linear on me, but I still enjoy the sweet oakiness of it, even if I can't wear it everyday. I'd recommend sampling those two as well.

    UPDATE:

I've been able tot test Fille En Aiguilles, Five O'Clock, Violet D'Ouillet and Un bois Vanille. I also revisited Daim Blond.

    Not one I disliked...

    Well,

    I've purchased Violet D'Ouillet!

Un bois Vanille is on my wishlist.

borneo is not discontinue, SL decided to moved it to their exclusive line like how they did to Furmerie Turque (really missed this) a while ago

My personal favourite is Santal Majuscule, but you could quite possibly hate it.

Bois de Violette is one I'd love to get. The only bell jar I have is of De Profundis, which is ok, but I think I'd rather had gotten Bois de Violette first.

I'm going to go against the grain and recommend my favorite Lutens (which doesn't get much love here on Basenotes); and that is Rousse. If you like cinnamon at all, to me this is the epitome of that spice & the best take on it I've yet to find. When I wear this one it's just like going into the stores at Xmas time and smelling all the cinnamon scented pine cones, decorative brooms & potpourri. Yes, as many say, it's definitely got that "red hots" candy type cinnamon vibe going, but that's why I love it. I've always preferred the hot spicy candy/potpourri type version of a cinnamon scent over the truer foody, gingerbread type smell of cinnamon pastries & so forth. Anyway, I adore Rousse (& if people think I chewed a whole pack of Big Red gum, I don't care )
