Azzaro Pour Homme although perhaps not modern enough for your taste.

I suggest L' Homme Sage by Divine. Similar notes to Rive Gauche Pour Homme but it has no lavender and is slightly more incense like.

Though not similar to Rive Gauche, I recommend these as they have a gentlemanly, fresh haircut, suit and tie vibe much like a man from the 1950's after a visit to the barber:

    Penhaligan's Sartorial
    Invasion Barbare
    Histoire de Parfums 1725
"I am a robot and I like cheese"

    Top 5:
    1. Axe Kilo
    2. Lectric Shave
    3. Vicks Vapor Rub
    4. Febreze Pour Homme
    5. Preferred Stock

In 2011, Azzaro released a modernized version of Azzaro Pour Homme called Azzaro Pour Homme L'Eau . . . http://www.basenotes.net/ID26134712.html . . . I really like this for everyday use.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I hear from Jack Hunter that Murdock sells some great barbershop fragrances (especially Patchouli and Black Tea). I have not tried them myself though.

    Fleurs de Citronnier by Lutens
Vetiver 48 (Creed) -- Brink it back!!!!
    Molinard 1,2 or 3 -- can't remember which

Not sure if you live in London, but Fortnums and Masons (2nd Floor) have a corner dedicated to 'gentleman's' scents -- quite a few rather obscure Italian scents that fit the bill.

Maybe the less sweet variations of the Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo range, also if Acqua di Parma released its Collezione Barbiere grooming range as scents, e.g. as EDP, EDC, EDT.

Acqua di Parma's Colonia Essenza is hard to beat IMHO for a modern barbershop-like scent. Can't get enough of it!

+1 for Azzaro pour homme, but again probably not modern enough if that's what you are looking for. IMO it may be hard to find barbershop-like scents that are super modern.

The intense version of Rive Gauche came out in 2003, but now that is ten years old. Jeez time flies . . .

Creed Royal Oud has a barbershop vibe to me. Some of the John Varvatos frangrances do too. Dolce & gabana the one gentleman with its patchouli and lavender could work as well.

Balenciaga Pour Homme has a very apparent barbershop vibe, which is why I don't like it, but it seems like it'd work for you.

Rive Gauche is an incredibly modern take on a classic genre.
Beauty is the disinterested one, without which the ancient world refused to understand itself, a word which both imperceptibly and yet unmistakably has bid farewell to our new world, a world of interests, leaving it to its own avarice and sadness.

Agreed with so many responses I didn't know where to start. Excellent suggestions.

I enjoy cutting hair as a hobby during the week, and I typically use Rive Gauche after my cuts. Another alterative is At The Barber`s Maison Martin Margiela for men-Replica

It took a few weeks to grow on me because the orange and basil really stood out in the first 10 minutes. After that it is smooth sailing. Although, after a fresh haircut and a nice shower, Invasion Barbare is my go-to in the last few months. Some may know already but I have been cutting hair for 24 years, and barbershop nostalgia is very dear to my heart. I remember getting my curls cut off when I was 4 yrs old and my mom crying when my dad walked through the door with me. Now I have a low cut that I maintenance every 4 days.

Different vibes, but I get similar effects for clean cut with Guerlain Vetiver/TF Grey Vetiver/Davidoff Goodlife.

    Good luck!

I know it's a dug up thread but if anyone comes by and want a very contemporary and young barbershop, "clean cut" one they should try Ferragamo's Acqua Essenziale Colonia.

Since my last reply in this thread, my fragrant journey has changed quite a bit and suggestions like Rive Gauche are really good.

My recommendation though is 1445 by Castle Forbes which is popular with wet shaving enthusiasts. This is like a modern version of Azzaro Pour Homme but an excellent aromatic fougere nonetheless.
